When I first got my own place, I got a bunch of my silverware and small pots/pans there

Used to go there pretty often to hunt for books (since you never know what you'll come across)

Not Goodwill since I don't think they are even a thing down here, but I do go to local thrift stores, both the Salvation Army and the Te Omanga Hospice shops, generally run by little old ladies. Content varies, but sometimes find some nice stuff. Got these last week for NZ$12 (a little over US$7).

Not often at all, but I'm not opposed to it. I've gotten some clothes there and I've checked them out for video games or electronics, but there's never been anything good whenever I check.

Yes, both to donate old clothes and check for new ones. I live within fifteen minutes of several goodwill stores that are in very affluent suburbs and it's truly amazing what rich people get rid of. I have been wearing a pair of sandals for years that probably cost $200 new and someone got rid of them after maybe using them once. The tread on the bottom was flawless. I paid $3.

I used to go to Goodwill almost every week because I would pretty consistently find older video game stuff and other electronics for almost nothing. Plus I had a friend who worked at one for a little while so I would get some notice on what new interesting stuff would come in. Even on trips where I don't buy anything, it's fun seeing all the weird shit that sometimes pops up there.

That was back in the early-mid 2010s though, a lot of Goodwills seem to have dried up for that kind of stuff.

It's still usually a good place for clothing and books though.

As others have said they're good for Silverware or small everyday houshold items, never found any good electronics or game stuff at one though but maybe I'm just not through enough.

A few years ago they used to be the best place to get valuable video games for close to nothing. I've gotten $20,000-$50,000 value of video games for less than $1,000 over the years (estimation). That ended shortly after COVID exploded after an army of stupid morons invaded the internet to blab about their "side-hustle" and "I can pay rent now." Fucking sucks. I've gotten barely anything in the past 2-3 years.

I used to go before it became a thing to buy from thrift stores and sell online. Now our local Goodwill charges a lot more to compete I guess. Another weird thing is ours now sorts clothing by color, not by size. I am not going back. Too much trouble. We have a sheltered workshop that is closer and better organized I like.

I haven't been there in a long time, but I used to go there for a variety of things. Clothes, kitchen stuff, books, video games, board games, etc. If I was bored one weekend, I would go to one just to buy a jigsaw puzzle for like $1, and take it home to assemble it. Usually missing a piece or two, but still fun. Then if I had a bunch of them sitting around, I would just donate them back.

I prefer Salvation Army though, since the prices are usually better. Goodwill seems to overcharge.

I like to buy my stuff new, even if I get less of it. I don't like the old fashioned styles.

Not a big fan of good will. I like thrift stores in general, but goodwill is usually pricier and with worse options since that is where everybody goes.

I actually got a couple of nice shirts at palto's closet a few weeks ago for $2-$4 a piece. There are a few more local thrift stores that occasionally will have something good, but are not usually worth the stop and then there is one that is out of the way that I try to stop at when I have the time and I am in the area. I got a $150 wool coat for $5 because it needed a new button and there were spare buttons in the pocket. I usually manage to find some good deals there.

I don't believe there's a Goodwill specifically around here, but a solid chunk of our furniture, kitchen stuff, and clothes have come from Value Village.

When looking for an appliance I need, which is rarely ever, I might browse there to see if I can get a deal. My mom keeps trying to get me to shop there for clothes, but just ugh... no. The styles are horrible, and my mom has horrible taste in "casual" shirts.

None of the thrift stores near me were ever like that. If they were, that stopped happening long before COVID. But for as long as I remember it's always like 1-2 gen old games, which tend to be the least valuable anyway. And of those they're like 90% sports games, Wii Fit boards and Guitar Hero instruments. There would be an occasional gem but they're fewer and far between now.

I do remember up until the late 00s/early 10s when people considered retro games worthless, though you could find them at a regular game store anyway. I regret not capitalizing back then (though I didn't really have any money, even for $5 games)

Yeah I got both sealed copies of Suikoden 1 and Breath of Fire 3 for $15 each in like 2003 at a Babbages. Not retro at the time but still damn good deals for two great RPGs.
