Typing that topic title out had me thinking about why that may be the case if what I'm suggesting is even true. Like my intent was initially to shit on people's sense of taste and ham it up for the sake of a topic, like how some people become the most obnoxious douchebags about pineapple on pizza or coffee vs tea, but I'm honestly kind of interested about the general consensus CE has on different foods.

So here's an actual picky eater's test for people to fill out:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/3/7/AAbh80AAE0_l.jpg

And as a show of good faith, I'll talk about the ones I wouldn't eat and the ones I would eat, but don't particularly like.

I wouldn't eat snails or raw fish. I don't like spinach, zucchini or mushrooms, though I will eat them, and if I'm having oysters I like them to be cooked first. So the least charitable score I could give myself is 6/30.

The initial hypothesis I had was that poverty and food additives have left a significant portion of American forumgoers with a diminished sense of taste or an unwillingness to leave their comfort zone. Like it's crazy to me that there are people who not only don't like calamari, but who find the thought of eating it gross and creepy. I live in a more coastal country where seafood is relatively abundant, and there's a lot of landlocked places in America where seafood is fairly uncommon I guess.

But on top of location, I feel like there could be an argument to be made for lack of availability due to cost. Like yeah people don't have a taste for olives, all they grew up on was bland, overprocessed oven food because that's all their parents could afford. Of course you're not gonna develop a taste for olives if you're spending every day eating that shitty frozen lasagna with the tasteless white cheese sauce on the top, what the fuck is an olive? That's not meant to be a joke - it's that thought that had me approaching this topic from a different angle.

I'm also thinking about high fructose corn syrup and the barfy chemical that American chocolate has, and the waxy candy like candy corn and shit. Like the more I actually think about it, the more I realise that this might actually be answerable?

I'm gonna keep the provocative title, but having actually thought about what I'm asking here, there's a bunch of legitimate reasons as to why your average American poster - CE or otherwise - would have some odd or bland takes on food.

fwiw, I grew up poor but my nan and pop kept a lot of chilis, olives, salami, sauerkraut and pickled herring around. I've been eating those really rich flavours for my entire life, though that thing about the tasteless white cheese on storebought lasagna is a personal experience of mine.

Snails, Oyster, Cauliflower, Zucchini, and raw fish.

I haven't even tried Oyster or Snails but the idea kinda makes me ill.

I've tried everything on that list except for snails. I would try them though, just never had the chance.

I've never been a picky eater at all and will eat anything that's offered to me.

Same. I don't think I'm gonna go out of my way to try them either.

I also don't like mayonnaise spread on a sandwich, but I'm ok with it mixed in stuff like potato salad or tuna salad. Same with mustard. Everything else on the list is fine.

I wouldn't eat snails (tried, didn't like), raw fish (wary of bacteria) or celery (dislike the bitter taste).

I'd eat oysters only if they were cooked. Everything else is ok, though obviously I like some things a lot more than others.

Pretty much. I'd probably give myself half a point for half of the items on the list, as I'll "only" eat them a certain way.

Like how I don't like cauliflower, but I'll stomach it if it's boiled in a stew. Similarly, I like garlic, but only as a seasoning/side. Raw garlic is not fun.

Onions are my most-hated on that list.

As for food I'll eat, I do love mushrooms and seafood. I also recently had snails; aside from being a pain to suck out of their shells, they're fine.

I'm an extremely picky eater. I scored 22 on that list, but that's just from the list. I also didn't count some stuff on there that I don't regularly eat, but would in some cases.

I basically don't eat veggies at all. I also don't eat eggs unless there's cheese involved (pretty much just omelets and egg/cheese bagels), potatoes, unless they're in the form of fries, chips or tator tots. I don't eat seafood. I don't eat spicy food. I don't eat beans.

I have medical issues with my weight and appetite though, I saw a doctor throughout my teens because I basically wasn't eating much of anything and I was severely underweight. I'm still underweight. I'm 6ft and weigh around 120 pounds.

I grew up in a middle class/upper middle class family, and in florida, so its not a location/poverty issue in my case.

On that list, if I was trapped at someone's place and they were offering me dinner. I'd eat everything on that list.

Except snails and oysters.

Off list, organs gross me out.

Testicles. Tongue. Intestines. Stomach. Brain. Lung. Fish heads. Eyeballs. Chicken feet.

I'd probably also leave the olives alone unless they were well mixed into the meal.

Soy sauce and dark chocolate? Really? No thanks I don't want a ton of sodium and msg from the former and don't need a sugar fix from the latter when fruits exist. I'm not even gonna address the joke inclusion of mayo.

Although out of that list the only thing that's probably healthy that I admit I'll never eat again is brussel sprouts. You can roast them or claim that they've been genetically engineered to taste better, there's simply no way that particular food will ever taste anything other than dirt butt.

Oh and tofu. I don't do soybeans, only actual good beans like black beans and pinto beans and heck even kidney beans

I'm surprised tomato isn't on there, I surely would have lost the game then. Putting it on a burger is not as big a travesty as mayo, and I'd still eat it if I absolutely have to, but it's the topping that least fits on a burger compared to lettuce-pickle-onion staple.

Yet I weirdly eat it in other forms like on pizza or as part of a salsa or pico de gallo or fahita. You know what it's really just in the context of a burger that it's ill-fitting. Wonder why.

I will eat everything on TC's (tame) list, but I don't love olives (either color) and I'd rather not eat eggplant. But I'll eat anything on the list if there's nothing else and I'm hungry!

Outside the list, I don't like:
* Sea urchin (uni) (it has made me gag every time I've tried it)
* I think big chunks of animal fat have a gross texture.
* Blood-based foods (mostly a mental block, since those I've accidentally eaten have been okay).
* I don't eat most organ meats (mostly a mental block).
* I rarely eat raw oysters (I think it's mean). Cooked oysters no problem.

Mushrooms, both olives, and lettuce. 100% a texture thing with all of them, olives feel like they turn to oily paste in my mouth and mushrooms taste like spongy dirt no matter how I've tried to clean/cook them.

Lettuce is...alright, I assume they're talking about iceberg lettuce, which I'd much rather just replace with raw spinach or a different mixed green that actually tastes like something.
