Nail trims went from $13 to $18. I emailed corporate and expressed my dissatisfaction, but in a respectful non-Karen way, and they contacted the store. The response from the store:

Unfortunately we did have a nail trim price increase specifically for cats. Cats tend to be more challenging to trim nails than dogs and there are more risks associated with potential cat bites than dog bites (both are obviously bad).

Cats having the potential to be biting little shits is a new discovery.

Yeah that's what I'm going to try. I think Lina might be more difficult than your average cat, because it always took them two people.

Yeah, it's worth a shot, at least she hopefully trusts you. Although cats are iffy on that lol. Good luck. I used to clip a rat's teeth and it was too stressful for me. I've always been good with clipping bird wings, nails, and dog nails. Just never a cat.

and who gets their cats claws trimmed

if it's to stop them from clawing things, they're doing it because their claws are dull.

You might want to look into getting gabapentin from your vet. Works wonders for uncooperative cats.

I think you press on the paws to make them stick out. But, shouldn't be something you need to do as long as you have a scratching post. The only real grooming you should need to do on a cat is if they are long-haired and need a trim from time to time.

Because without that addendum, people would respond to the statement by arguing that dog bites are still bad and therefore cat grooming shouldn't be more expensive. They're just heading off the most likely rebuttal so they don't have to deal with as many responses.

Cat bites present a significant risk of a very, very serious infection. Being scratched may hurt more, but bites are much more dangerous. A workplace that has to deal with them as an occupational hazard is therefore going to try to avoid them and/or charge more to offset the potential costs of having one happen.

A cat scratch is fairly minor pain, though. It's only marginally worse than being bitten, unless you get a really bad one somehow.

They can, but they're generally shallower wounds that don't close as quickly, so it's a lot easier to clean them. Bites tend to be deeper and smaller, so they don't stay open for very long and are much harder to clean out. There's also a broader range of dangerous bacteria living in cats' mouths (including the same bacteria they get on their claws thanks to cleaning themselves, only in a warm, moist environment where they can last much longer).

Five minutes, a 10-15-minute appointment slot just in case she doesn't cooperate, up to two groomers, rent for the space they're using, insurance to cover injuries... The costs to do it commercially add up, and I strongly suspect that it's that last one that's resulted in this price hike (namely, a cat bit a groomer, it got infected, and the medical bills/workers' comp payments ended up being more than the old price was able to cover). If you don't feel it's worth $18, don't pay $18 for it. You can get a pair of clippers for like $10-15 and do it yourself.
