I keep finding these guys around, but the weird thing is they're usually dead or almost dead. And I'm finding them in weird places, mostly coming out from under the oven(?!)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/5/7/AARX-HAAEomJ.jpg

there were a couple of these in my office this morning, but right next to the A/C unit so im hoping maybe they came in from outside?

around this time last year, i also remember finding them dead right around the crack under my front door, so i assume those came from outside.

any advice? also if they are living inside my walls, am i responsible for that as a condo unit owner? >_>

that definitely looks like an ant, termites are lighter color. If they're coming out from under the oven there's probably a bunch more under there(or holes in the wall behind it), they like warm places.

should check outside along the walls too.

don't think that's a carpenter ant. that said, carpenter ants only eat dead wood, they don't eat live wood, so they aren't a direct threat to your home like termites are. however, lots of carpenter ants means dead wood is nearby, which might indicate you have something rotting somewhere. this has happened to me twice, once there was some rotting trim wood on my exterior and another time the drywall and wood behind my shower was rotting away

Ok here's a clearer pic, it does seem to have the cinched waist. So flying ants = carpenter ants?

Flying ants are ants looking to start a new colony most of the time when the former colony is doing well and it's hot out. Usually happens in july/aug.

Tl;dr you got ants trying to fuck in your house and make it their house most likely

As a condo unit owner you should contact your HOA. Typically you do not own the walls or vents and they are property which your monthly fees go towards maintaining.

Don't relax. Carpenter ants are worse then termites. They do way more damage and are harder to get rid of.

They're actually dying and then coming back three days later.

Carpenter ants are the smaller dark brown/black ants. We got a shit ton in Texas. Those are either flying ants or even worse, termites.

The worst part about building the hive is the lack of OSHA compliance.

Well, also sometimes the queen eats a worker but mostly it's the OSHA stuff.

Looks like a carpenter ant. Winged ants are reproductives with the females being larger and males being smaller, all ants without wings are female. Carpenter ants are primary WDOs, meaning they will attack sound wood. They dont eat it like a termite, they mine it. If you see winged ones, there is a colony nearby, and they are looking for love. As soon as they mate, they male dies, and the female will fly off to start a new colony. It takes roughly 7 years for a female to grow wings, so seeing reproductives usually means the colony is established. This does not mean you have an infestation, it could have flown in. Tell tale signs of an infestation would be several worker ants and seeing piles of frass (sawdust)

Im only familiar with the carpenter ant species of the Pacific Northwest, if this is elsewhere, my info may not be 100% accurate.

thanks for the info, yeah i am in the PNW. Seems like I am only seeing the flying ones, and no worker ants or sawdust like you said. Based on the fact they were coming in under my front door last year, I am gonna hope they're just coming in from outside again >_> weird they are under my oven though

wait wtf these ants live 7+ years? thats crazy theyre so little

I think he means it takes about 7 years for a colony to grow/mature to the point it starts producing breeding ants (males and new queens). During that time there's going to be multiple generations of worker ants who live and die to get it to that point (so if there's a nest in your house producing winged/breeding ants, there's probably a lot of damage done already)

A queen who mates and starts a successful colony can live quite a lot longer (like 20-30 years)

Yes, exactly. Thank you! Are you in pest control too?

Nah one of my favorite games as a kid was Simant. It was one of those games that came with a fat manual I liked to read and like half the book was just background information about ant biology so I've always thought they were pretty cool insects.
