11-month-old girl dies after left in car for 3 hours while parents went to church: Police

An 11-month-old baby girl has died after being left in a car for three hours while her parents attended a Florida church service, police said.

Police in Palm Bay responded Sunday around 1 p.m. to a report of an unresponsive infant in a vehicle.

"When they arrived, they learned the infant had been left in a car for approximately three hours while the parents went to the church service," the Palm Bay Police Department said in a statement.

The infant was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced deceased, police said Tuesday. A police department spokesperson did not have the time of death available.

No arrests have been made in the case at this time and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

"This is an unfortunate incident, and our condolences and prayers go out to the family," Palm Bay Police Chief Mario Augello said in a statement.

Still weird for the police chief to give condolences to the suspects, though. At least it sounds like it would be. Maybe it's a strategy?

How does this keep happening? Ive heard stories of these kind of tragedies my entire life and I dont understand how a parent can be this negligent.
Its either:
  • The parent forgot the kid was in the backseat. Not too hard to do when youre sleep deprived and maybe naturally forgetful/rushing.
  • The parent is stupid and doesnt understand that cars get hot in the sun and are dangerous for children.

I think the latter in this case. I cant imagine their plan when they left home was to bring their baby inside the church but forgot for 3 hours.

I dont think its possible to simply forget about your kid they have to have some sort of mental condition or were drugged up. Extreme stupidity and extreme sleep deprivation doesnt explain it

Being forgetful is not bringing diapers or a bottle with you. Theres no excuse to forget that your newborn child is in the car seat when you put them in it minutes ago.

This was no accident. You don't forget your kid for 3 hours. Don't they have to keep the kid busy in church, or would they have dropped the kid off at a daycare inside?

Yeah, experts typically agree that it's unintentional and caused by sleep deprivation and changes to routine. It's easy for people to hate on parents for this but there's a reason that people are rarely charged for it

I recently rented a car that has a warning to check the back seat when you turn it off, I assume for this very reason as it only did so when there was a passenger there

My cars both have this feature and do it even if no one's back there. If you ignore it the car lets out a loud beep when you shut the door.

But unfortunately you can shut the beep feature off so it just gives you the reminder.
