Oh ya beated some spring animes

Vinland Saga S2 was much better than S1. It's still slow at times, and the first half often didn't do it for me, but the second half was excellent. Tremendous meditation on pacifism, with some fantastic development for Thorfinn, along with some good tearjerking scenes. The rest of the cast was quite good as well. Really does a good job portraying the shittiness of war and slavery, but without losing a core of hope.

In a season full of romcoms, The Dangers in My Heart came out as #1. First of all, it's extremely funny. Pretty much everything Kei, the MC, says and thinks is hilarious. That's true at the start when he's an edgelord, and it's true later on when he can't stop freaking out at everything Anna, the love interest, does. She's a very silly character as well, constantly doing ridiculous things that you can't help but laugh at. Second, the romance stuff is very cute. Both characters are adorable together, and you can't help cheering for them. There's a solid supporting cast in there too, and it's great how supportive they all are. Kei's mom and sister are amazing, particularly the sister in the final episode. Lastly, the direction and animation are impeccable. This really feels like the kind of series that's improved by its adaptation.

The slice of life offerings mostly weren't as good as the romance, unfortunately. Too Cute Crisis started with a very funny and cute first episode, which worked great for me since I love cats. However, although I wouldn't say the quality ever dropped, the show is terribly repetitive, with most episodes being essentially the same thing (the MC freaking out over cute animals, then eventually the other aliens also freaking out over cute animals). I wasn't a fan of whenever pet owners argued their pets are the cutest, either. It kept me laughing until the end though, especially whenever the aliens speculated on earth animals and created monstrosities instead.

Otaku Elf was also super middling. Elda the elf is fun, but the rest of the cast kinda sucks. There's a bunch of history lessons, which I didn't care for. Wish the episodes had more variety here too, but I didn't like it as much as Too Cute from the start.

Yuri Is My Job had a weak start, but I liked it more as it embraced the drama, since it was never good at being funny/lighthearted. Hime getting into increasingly serious situations because of her (and everyone else's) bad decisions was good times, and I quite liked Sumika's development too. Will probably read this at some point.

Finally, for what I've finished so far, Skip and Loafer rules. Mainly because of Mitsumi, who's a top tier shoujo protagonist. I love her endless cheerfulness, and it's good when she gets serious too. The show shines whenever it's focusing on her. Shima, the love interest, isn't quite as good, and his past drama is my least favorite part of the show, but he's still a lot of fun, and he makes a fantastic partner for Mitsumi. I wish shoujo anime got sequels more often.

I also dropped A Galaxy Next Door after a couple eps. The main couple had zero chemistry and the manga stuff sucked. Apparently the anime never really improved after that.

Spring anime rankingz so far:

  1. The Dangers in My Heart
  2. Skip and Loafer
  3. Vinland Saga S2
  4. Too Cute Crisis
  5. Yuri Is My Job
  6. Otaku Elf
  7. A Galaxy Next Door

Now that In/Spectre S2 is pretty much done (for me, I'm one ep to go this week), I can't say if I like it or not. The concept is less annoying with the shorter stories, but this is harder to follow than most shows due to how it is very talk heavy.

It doesn't help that the main dude is even less important now than he was in Season 1. It's one thing that Iwanaga is (rightly) the focal point of the show, but I forget he even exists unless she jokes about wanting to have sex with him...

The show is never "bad," though. It is just...slow.

swordz9s riveting Summer 2023 anime write-ups. Lets see if I finish this time

Jujutsu Kaisen 2 - Wow first show on the chart is a sequel to a fucking great anime. Off to a good start!

Mushoku Tensei 2 - Ive heard this series is actually good despite the awful degenerate MC, but dunno if Ill ever check it out

Horimiya side project - Side stories to a series I never watched

Bleach 2 Soul Society Boogaloo - Hey its more Bleach.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead - Actually
might be interesting. Wonder what his bucket list even looks like other than sex likely being on it

Masamune-kun 2 - LMAO this shit got a sequel

Rent A Girlfriend 3 - Ive only heard complaints about this series so its amazing it keeps getting sequels especially with such mediocre looking waifus

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses - How the hell do you make a series like this and not have it feel like the concept has gotten bored after a few chapters?

To be continued

I am looking forward to it, I'll be watching it as it comes out which is pretty rare for me, but I don't watch too much current anime, certainly nowhere near most folks in this topic too - just AoT and Spy x Family for recent stuff comes to mind. Anything else I binge after it's complete.

I've wanted to rewatch the original for a while so I guess this is an instance where procrastination pays off. I loved the music in the original so much though so expecting the new version to lack in that regard but ideally they nail everything else.

I also hope they'll cover the post-Shishio stuff, honestly never thought we'd see the day the property would be revived considering the criminal taint on it... I remember musing about maybe it coming back when the Bleach return was announced, continuing where it left off from the manga. Guess they decided to go the "Brotherhood" direction with it, ideally, though it'll be years before we get to the new material won't it.

Other than Kenshin, I know I got Spy x Family coming back in October & movie in December, AoT final episode coming sometime, now I just need my friggin Gobin Slayer return date announcement. Where is my Goblin Slayer announcement!!!

They should be able to do the Tokyo and Kyoto arcs within 50 episodes, if not less, so if it's a continuous airing, we'd just have new stuff after that. I'd assume there'll be breaks between seasons, but I'm not sure where they'd be put. I guess they could do a 13 episode season for Tokyo then a 26 episode season for Kyoto? Or two 25 ep seasons, with the first having the opening parts of Kyoto?

I read that they're doing two cours back to back and I don't remember Kyoto arc in the original series starting before like, episode 30? I also don't know or remember how much filler was in the original series, probably making the error in assuming there was little to none that early on but that's why I assumed we'd only see Tokyo for now, Kyoto S2. So then we're up to 2026 or later before third season (if we get there).

Unless they do change plans to "continuous airing" which would definitely be great (and truly "Brotherhood"-style, lol). We'll see I guess!

The Tokyo arc in the original anime is like half filler, and it makes up the first 27 episodes. It has less than half as many manga chapters as Kyoto, which was 35 episodes in the original anime. Something's gone wrong if we get two cours of Tokyo.

I haven't watched much anime lately (been having a crappy few months) but I finally watched something that I thought sounded interesting from pyresword's ranking topic.

Time of Eve was pretty good! I especially liked the atmosphere of the android cafe and the laid-back tone of a lot of it even as it explored some pretty heavy themes. I'm usually not a fan of settings where robots are treated badly even though they're essentially indistinguishable from humans. Still, this show used it to tell stories with some nice emotional beats. My biggest problem was that it had a a few hints of bigger things in the world, like an anti-android groups making moves against the cafe and a shadowy pro-android group, but in the end it didn't really explore any of it. It felt like a show that was building towards a second season that never came. Ah well, it was still fine and I'm glad I watched it.

Glad you liked it! I would have liked more of the series also for sure but I'm still definitely glad with what we got.

One thing I did infer from the show is that in-universe the advancement of robot technology such that they are indistinguishable from humans is relatively recent history, which at least changes a few things about how I view the world. (I don't think this is ever actually stated anywhere as canon though so who knows.)

I think a remake is more prudent than trying to make a sequel 15 years after the fact, and whether or not the old series needs a remake (it doesn't) doesn't really change whether or not I'm excited for one. It is true that one unlikely hypothetical way that I could be more excited is if we had some kind of confirmation that we were going to be getting more content than in the original anime, like if it was announced for 50 episodes or something.

The Passione bit doesn't mean much to me. The only shows I've personally seen from Passione are Rokka which was fantastic, and Citrus which failed on the merits of its base story rather than the studio. Either way though to me the bit that Takeo Takahashi is returning as director matters more for what to expect, and I think this can only be a good thing.

I love Higurashi but it just...doesn't need more content. It started interesting before just devolving into, well, more Higurashi. I appreciate the Umineko link the show gave but I would rather just get Umineko!
You can make brand new Higurashi conent but it still feels like a rehash because the ground is just too trodden.

Final episode was fucking legendary, though. Just skip to that.
