Oh ya beated some spring animes

Vinland Saga S2 was much better than S1. It's still slow at times, and the first half often didn't do it for me, but the second half was excellent. Tremendous meditation on pacifism, with some fantastic development for Thorfinn, along with some good tearjerking scenes. The rest of the cast was quite good as well. Really does a good job portraying the shittiness of war and slavery, but without losing a core of hope.

In a season full of romcoms, The Dangers in My Heart came out as #1. First of all, it's extremely funny. Pretty much everything Kei, the MC, says and thinks is hilarious. That's true at the start when he's an edgelord, and it's true later on when he can't stop freaking out at everything Anna, the love interest, does. She's a very silly character as well, constantly doing ridiculous things that you can't help but laugh at. Second, the romance stuff is very cute. Both characters are adorable together, and you can't help cheering for them. There's a solid supporting cast in there too, and it's great how supportive they all are. Kei's mom and sister are amazing, particularly the sister in the final episode. Lastly, the direction and animation are impeccable. This really feels like the kind of series that's improved by its adaptation.

The slice of life offerings mostly weren't as good as the romance, unfortunately. Too Cute Crisis started with a very funny and cute first episode, which worked great for me since I love cats. However, although I wouldn't say the quality ever dropped, the show is terribly repetitive, with most episodes being essentially the same thing (the MC freaking out over cute animals, then eventually the other aliens also freaking out over cute animals). I wasn't a fan of whenever pet owners argued their pets are the cutest, either. It kept me laughing until the end though, especially whenever the aliens speculated on earth animals and created monstrosities instead.

Otaku Elf was also super middling. Elda the elf is fun, but the rest of the cast kinda sucks. There's a bunch of history lessons, which I didn't care for. Wish the episodes had more variety here too, but I didn't like it as much as Too Cute from the start.

Yuri Is My Job had a weak start, but I liked it more as it embraced the drama, since it was never good at being funny/lighthearted. Hime getting into increasingly serious situations because of her (and everyone else's) bad decisions was good times, and I quite liked Sumika's development too. Will probably read this at some point.

Finally, for what I've finished so far, Skip and Loafer rules. Mainly because of Mitsumi, who's a top tier shoujo protagonist. I love her endless cheerfulness, and it's good when she gets serious too. The show shines whenever it's focusing on her. Shima, the love interest, isn't quite as good, and his past drama is my least favorite part of the show, but he's still a lot of fun, and he makes a fantastic partner for Mitsumi. I wish shoujo anime got sequels more often.

I also dropped A Galaxy Next Door after a couple eps. The main couple had zero chemistry and the manga stuff sucked. Apparently the anime never really improved after that.

Spring anime rankingz so far:

  1. The Dangers in My Heart
  2. Skip and Loafer
  3. Vinland Saga S2
  4. Too Cute Crisis
  5. Yuri Is My Job
  6. Otaku Elf
  7. A Galaxy Next Door
