I'm gonna second that I also really like this post. People making more effort to think about my own posts than I was is a good sign they're Town.

I do fairly solidly believe BCT is Town, and I think if he isn't we'll find out otherwise quickly. If he's Scum he's being coached and will slip eventually. Just keep asking him questions and probing.

Dumey and Sheep are not both scum. Simplest answers is that they're town or maybe that one of them has some scum role that is easy to claim as town as well. It's not that a great a town move if true I think, but if they're scum they've already kinda locked themselves into something a bit specific, so yeah, double town is simplest. At least based on that alone.

Don't think you missed a memo Chris, but it could just as well be the other way around imo. I don't think town BCT is a go to mislynch target for scum. Not anymore. He's actually really hard to mislynch as scum, I can confirm from some games back. The better move then seemed to me to be to try to pocket him because he can't help himself but go after people that suspect him.

Also BCT has done nothing to ping me either, alignment wise, but I am a bit bothered by the over defensiveness, if you're town (and this goes in any game in the future) it'd be really nice if you could look past suspicions like that, town can easily be wrong, and I've honestly found you pretty good at scumhunting when you don't get distracted by people going after you.

First port of call - Wallmaster, have you played any mafia before?

I played numerous games of mafia irl years ago, but have never played online. In fact, Paper Mario is the first and only mafia game I ever read, either. Following it was a lot of fun and Im excited for this game and glad to be participating. Thanks for letting me, all. Also feel free to call me Wall.

Oh and this goes without saying but I will once again remind whoever the cop is to please scan wallmasterz on night 1. He is a brand new player (first game ever!) so just get him checked ASAP. Please and thank you. Andy will vouch for this strategy I'm sure.

Ive got mixed feelings about being scanned. Id like to be around long enough in this game to meaningfully contribute to solving it, so not being mislynched would be nice. But once Im confirmed town, if not sooner, Im probably getting nkd. Once everyone gets past the whole dont kill the new person n1 to be nice rule, new folks seemingly make a popular target for scum (see: Cody last game). I would give a friendly suggestion to cop not to waste a precious scan on me Im town and every scan can be the key difference maker.

Not to risk putting a target on my back d1, but if I were cop Id scan Ulti first. Hes approaching the start of this game completely differently than last time (obv Im working with a small sample size) which doesnt mean hes scum but it got my attention. In his first two posts he declares himself town and says hell be afk until end of d1. Next he says playing town is easy. He then casts a serious vote for Dumey. Reiterates disliking being active d1 (obviously not that much though!). Then he tells cop to scan me. And then he acknowledges directing power, but feels compelled to explain it by attributing it to his excitement over the player list giving him extra focus. On p2 turned his attention to Dumey and put him on the defensive over his Im tempted to claim post which Dumey interpreted, probably rightly, as fishing for more info about his role. In his goodnight post he said go ahead and kill Dumey. He then said Sheep is scum. Said he rolled town and his math analysis indicates at least 2/3 of Chris/Han/Crescent are town too. I find this interesting and possibly an attempt to lump a scummate in with a couple townies and if they flip scum sooner he can say well, my gut was right and they were the scum. He then asked for the scum board link from last game for research purposes. All in the first hour of gameplay. His last significant post was responding to Chris asking what was fishy about a response Sheep gave. He also mentions Crescent a LOT and says they pass the gut check. I think Ulti and Crescent may be linked for good or ill.

Ulti clearly relies heavily on his (seemingly very solid) instincts and reads on people, so wanting to scan someone hes never played with before and therefore has no read on is not a scumtell whatsoever. But if he is scum, directing cop to scan a player he knows to be town under the pretense of check the new guy by default is certainly a move.

For the record I dont think Ulti is definitely scum. But he is the only person who tried controlling the game right out of the gates. Remember he said playing town is easy. Last game he was town vanilla and was barely active until the games final day. Maybe its coincidence, or maybe hes a veteran player who thinks being town is easy and therefore boring, and hes invigorated by a new game where he has a chance to really impact the game as scum. Yeah godfather roles are always a risk but I say scan the dude, and if he scans town, Im feeling better about letting Ulti cook with our minds somewhat at ease.

I remember another post I need to respond to from my initial readthrough but I have to start working so Ill catch any comments directed towards me I missed later today (irl).

Okay, this rubbed me all sorts of wrong, but you'll get some benefit of the doubt for now since newer players (new to this format at least) tend to care as much about staying alive as anything. I'll say for now that scanned town players can easily live the whole game, this happens often enough, and that if you're town I would not worry about it at all. Let alone because Ulti of all people said that.

being scanned by the cop means the host gives the cop info about the scan target, assuming the cop isnt rbd, typically the cop learns role in my experience but seems flavor cop is more common in this format? And as implied in my last post sometimes it can be an unreliable read. Why do you ask?

and ulti who were you hoping to find info on in the old scum chat? Obviously youre 100% on Dumey and you think sheep is scum. Id suspect you wanted info on someone or something youre more on the fence about?

and ctes all fair points, I shouldnt have said Im a likely target just for being new. thats not fair and I cant base a blanket statement on one game. That just came from being excited to play and wanting to stay alive a while to enjoy doing so, but town winning is absolutely the most important thing to me whether Im alive for it or not.

Still catching up but getting some thoughts out of the way while I do.

EDumey seems to be playing differently from last game, but also from his last towngame. I am a bit wary if only because I feel like he's being less judgmental of people and letting others bring up topics for him.

Sheep I dont recall ever making excuses for his activity right away, I even checked the logs to make sure of that (though he hadn't played in a while). And his posts so far all have a weird theatrical bent to them afterwards.

the part where he takes credit for 'confirming EDumey' when I cant even tell how he thinks thats what happened. I dont like that part at all.

Also I have a small question for Ulti.

Yes I am directing power, fresh off breaking my curse and being on a life high. Plus I'm genuinely thrilled to be playing with Chris and Crescent here so I have extra focus, so let's just mercilessly get a town win here and not dick around.

Why feel the need to justify yourself when you did the same directing-townpower-thing last game and didnt give a damn then?

Oh and wallmaster, in board8 we typically have cops (scans for scum or town), flavorcops and rolecops separately.

Pretty sure Death is Town btw, there's a lot more good stuff in that first meaningful post than I would expect coming from ScumDeath (also, I just don't think ScumDeath avoids the game intentionally for a few hours and then makes such an obvious nothing opening post. ScumDeath loves appearing as though he is doing something while not actually doing a ton.)

Flavor cops are pretty rare. Cops are very common.

Aside from anyone who may have placed suspicion on you, do you have any reads (even if they're shaky)? I know it's pretty early on, but this has been solid content for D1 and I would like to know your thoughts.

The new player rule always pisses me off a little bit because when I returned after many many years I didn't get the pass because the rule had just lost town a game lol. But yeah, it's fine for a rule of thumb though it shouldn't be a hard rule.

I think Ulti commenting on the scan is a compelte null tell tbh.

I was just trying to say if Ulti is scum its awfully convenient for him to knowingly direct a scan away from scum under the guise of objectivity saying hey, its a best practice when playing with new people. If cop sees value in clearing a townie then scanning me isnt useless at all. But scanning scum is better than scanning a townie so I dont apologize for responding to ulti directing power by me saying Im town and scanning me isnt the optimal play.

Fair enough. Dont necessarily like directing townpower myself, but I cant say it backfired on you last game. (didnt really do much either way but whatever)

Also to be honest I think its rude how rarely I get copscanned.

Wall, regular cops return innocent or guilty and nothing else. Brand new players are guaranteed to live to the end of the game unless scanned, and I have a long standing belief that brand new players should be scanned ASAP for that reason. Just resolve the ambiguity and get it out of the way so we can move on one way or another. A lot of towns have lost a lot of games because they make the mistake of thinking they can read new people without help.

If youre town youll scan innocent and have nothing whatsoever to worry about. Youre also the full protection of a day one newbie pass (even if you actually are mafia) because everyone here knows killing a new guy on day one is just a dick move.

All that said, why would you not want to be scanned innocent?

I understand where you're coming from. Let me put it this way - do you think enough people will listen to Ulti for you to need to worry about him directing a cop scan towards you?

I'm not taking issue with what you said, I just find the way you said it is slightly more weighted towards what scum tends to say than the average. Nothing you should be to concerned about, unless you're scum ;)
