It's probably Hogwarts based solely on the screeching people have been doing. The harassment streamers are getting for playing it is just attracting more eyes to it.

Being talked about alone does not make a game iconic lol, that's an aspect but there's the actual quality of the game itself. And also talking ABOUT the quality of the game itself, not just talking about the controversy of "fuck your concerns, me need childhood wizard game"

Elden Ring is probably the most obvious answer for the long run.

Yeah I think the discussion around Hogwarts doesn't quite make it a truly iconic game - Elden Ring is easily the most recent to clear that bar and it's kind of not even close. That game utterly consumed everything both leading up to and following its launch, it was a legit moment.

It does make it iconic in the larger scheme of things. The level of harassment could potentially lead to a bunch of policy changes, shift the attitudes of key streamers, and inspire more memes. That's what makes something iconic. Plus Harry Potter is one of the biggest IPs in the world, appealing to "non-gamers".

I've heard more about this game that I have literally zero interest in than stuff that's actually on my radar. Every day there's a new story of some streamer getting witch hunted over the damn thing because Rowling happens to be a piece of shit. Its getting to where this is bigger than just "popular video game".

Yeah, I think Hogwarts Legacy is going to have staying power, for better or worse.

I see Hogwarts Legacy fuckin everywhere but only ever in the context of either "this exists and is Harry Potter" or "this gives money to an anti-semite and transphobe". I think to be an iconic video game people have to actually care about it as a video game.

Anyway, obviously this year Tears of the Kingdom is the next poised to be unless it really underwhelms for people. Outside of that, uhhhhh maybe Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Depends on if that can stick the landing too.

The difference is that Big Rigs is iconic for the game itself, this would be like saying Zoe Quinn's Depression Quest is an iconic game

Depression Quest hasn't gotten anywhere near the press Hogwarts Legacy has. The last game with similar vibes to HW was The Last Of Us 2, and that sparks an argument basically every time it gets mentioned

Depression Quest got so much press that they literally did a whole Gamergate over it what in god's name are you talking about

It may have been the catalyst for GamerGate but very little about GamerGate was actually centered around Depression Quest itself. You can know about GameGate and Zoe Quinn and literally know nothing about what Depression Quest is, or even that it exists. Hogwarts Legacy isn't going to he so easily ignored, as it's an extremely highly-selling and high-profile game attached to a major IP.

How many games have to bomb before Hogwarts Legacy starts getting considered? BotW 2, FF16, and RE4 Remake? That seems like a longshot but we've had worse years of high-profile AAA flops.

Oh I don't disagree that it'll be being talked about, I just don't think for reasons that would deem it "iconic." I very much disagree that being talked about for being a magnet for controversy of that caliber makes the game itself "iconic"

But apparently that is a minority opinion here, alas

22 had 6 games and of those 6, 2 (Stray and Plague Tale) had lower reviews than Hogwarts. I dont think its entirely factored on reviews, it could just be cultural relevance or money from the devs

Assassins Creed Odyssey, The Outer Worlds, Ghost of Tsushima, RE Village, arguably even Stray. Hogwarts Legacy fits the bill unfortunately. A strong year would block it but in a normal year it gets in I think.

Yeah PS4 Ghost got good reviews but not among the best of the year reviews - I think all the ones I listed and Hogwarts Legacy averaged within about 1% of each other.

It's tough for me to comment too much on Hogwarts because seeing as how Board 8 is pretty much the only place I hang out online and like... we don't care about it so in that very warped sense it doesn't strike me as "iconic." Like.... Fire Emblem Engage got a 500 topic. That's like triple the discussion Hogwarts Legacy got for a game basically released at about the same time!

...It's got a lot of commercials on TV, I guess?

If pressed to answer the topic question I'd probably say Elden Ring but I dunno if even that feels right since at least to me it doesn't feel like that much of a breakthrough from Dark Souls - though it at least has the prestige and awards that I'd shut up and fall in line behind it as an answer if pushed. Otherwise I might fall all the way back to Breath of the Wild.
