This is a very retro, very low-poly nomination. Back in the day, games like this were very effective at getting across what they needed to get across with minimal assets and polish. Theres something charming about this. I especially like the endless gray floor in image 5, and the barely bothered giant in image 4.

I dont have much to say about this. I never played Runescape, Old School or New School(?), so I dont have any particular affinity toward this nom apart from a general fondness of old things.

I dunno what Last Exile is, but it's interesting...if very gray and brown for the first 2 minutes of that video.

I kinda wonder how I would have treated Runescape (which I have not played, but I have played contemporaries) if I were doing the ranking.

Im not really sure anything about this art sticks out to me. The characters feel fairly standard waif-like prettyboy designs. Theres an aura of mischief and danger thats very apparent throughout several of the characters have smirks, one has a murder weapon, and another is cradling someone whos bloodsoaked. Im not familiar with anything about this series, so trying to piece things together based on these context clues is intriguing, but like I said its challenging to form an opinion! The only thing that sticks out is the pink highlighting in the last picture; against the black and white images its pretty striking. (I also laughed at the one dudes pouty face.)

66. Brawl Stars (Promotional Artwork)

I have never heard of this. After looking at the provided images, I guess its a mascot/party fighter game? The images are brimming with color. The character designs are actually a little plain to me in spite of all the color, but maybe thats intentional; maybe the game(?) banks on the brightness doing the job.

I dont know, its genuinely hard to judge this one. My favorite character is probably the blobby person in image 5, but overall I dont really get a strong sense of the personality of the work, which is so odd because everything is bright and vivid! I guess Im not really into the character designs, and paradoxically, when everything is so sunshiney, it all sort of looks samey. I do like all the bold colors and overall fun vibe though.

Some of the assets in old school runescape are actually 'new' because they are still updating the game but had to keep to the old style of graphics. From a technical standpoint yeah it deserves to be low ranked but I do think some of the gear and environmental designs compensate for that

I'm posting a little late because I've been sick the past few days, but I do want to comment on the last few entries. One thing I love about visual design is that it's easy to say what you like about it and what stands out about it, as opposed to other creative stuff like music.

What If - One of the cool things about animation is that you don't have to stick to reality. What If plays it safe for most episodes, but it sometimes takes advantage of the animation. Overall, I think it plays it too safe as a middle between animation and capturing the live-action faces.

Victoria 3 - As someone who's played a ton of Civ 5, I see a lot of similarities. I like both games' artstyle of like "vivid realism". It's realistic, but it's also colorful and a little cartoony to not go into that Uncanny Valley. The different colors for each nation is also very nice.

CD-i Zelda - CD-i Zelda animation slaps. It's horrible, but my god, it's iconic. I think my favorite is the Morshu introduction, because the arm motions are just wild. I actually think the general outline of Link, Zelda, and the King is pretty nice. Touch it up a lot and you got a really good look for a cartoon.

FFT Manual - I like the old-school FF look, especially for job-based systems. It's pretty good, but that's it.

Last Exile - I don't have anything to say other than I like the song.

Runescape - I agree that there's a certain quality to these low-poly art. It's not pretty to look at, but there's an odd charm to it.

Brawl Stars - If this was a kid's cartoon and I was a kid, I would watch this for sure.

65. Paper Mario

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/8/AACpsLAADwxq.jpg
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/9/AACpsLAADwxr.jpg

Ive always found the Paper Mario artstyle endearing. For being made of 2d material, Mario and the rest of his cast are very expressive!

These two pictures are crowdshots, sometimes with overlapping characters. There are some neat spins on common Mario enemies. Goombellas design is definitely superior to Goombarios, since she actually has a design more complicated than a Goomba with a hat. I also like the punk Lakitu with a mohawk. A lot of of the other designs are surprisingly conservative with changes.

Paper Mario strikes me as something that would benefit more from video footage than just pictures. That way youd get to see the cast in motion. Ah well!

One thing Im learning from these nominations is Im gravitating toward the really colorful aesthetics. League of Legends doesnt disappoint in that area, with colors popping off all over the place. The first image is a gorgeous composition of blues and greens; the second, a battle scene, feels like blue vs. red. (Though, as always, I question the battle armor of some of these ladies.) The video doesnt really add to this aesthetic, instead showcasing the various colors in motion.

Overall theres nothing terribly exciting about LoLs aesthetic, at least evinced from this nomination, though I always appreciate a good rainbow.

Well, I just think Black Butler has a really nice interpretation and take on the Victorian aesthetics, especially because Yana Toboso's art is really pretty. But it was difficult to portray then with just a few pictures, so fair enough! I also considered using the anime but it looks even more generic.

And yeah I really like the splash of colour.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0qrhW13yiU

This is going to be a very subjective writeup for one reason: I dislike black backgrounds, as featured in the Princess Remedy videos. They give me a headache. (Related: I cant use dark mode on apps or browsers for the same reason.) So while I can appreciate the ZX Spectrum homage Princess Remedy is going for, I would never be able to actually play these games without needing an Advil or an icepack.

Thats not to say theres not good stuff here. The enemies have designs at the intersection of cute and creepy. Theres a psychedelic feel when you kill an enemy, which leads to this massive, screen-shaking explosion. It feels like your standard Earthbound-inspired retro RPG, though with a Spectrum tint. If it werent for the black background, this might make it higher, so Im sorry for my UTTER INADEQUACY.

(Its got cool music though. I think you know my opinion on the soundtrack.)

Skyclad Observer~

Sorry handsomeboy, I couldnt view your second image, so Im just going off of the other four and the video.

Steins;Gate is one of those things Ive always meant to check out, but never have. Maybe its because I dont find its visual design to be terribly interesting? The OP (awesome song aside) suffers from that visual novel trope of were not going to animate the characters, so here are still images of them moving around. I understand that most VNs probably dont have the budget for that sort of thing, but its still a little off-putting.

The actual images are fine. I like the gritty feel of these characters. Rintarou Okabe looks like he hasnt bathed in a while; I laughed at image 5, when hes close to the camera in a fish-eye lens. There are, like, filters over the camera that make everything seem dirtier, particularly over the actual characters.

Whats fascinating about my relationship to Steins;Gate is I genuinely have no idea what its about, and this nomination doesnt tell me anything new. I cant decide if thats a good thing or not.

61. Detroit: Become Human
@Raka_Putra
https://youtu.be/8a-EObAhYrg
https://youtu.be/EtF_iOZokiQ

Its tough to judge this one, because to me at least the visual design in these clips is near future, with little difference to our world. The graphics are crisp and in high detail I especially appreciated the rain shimmer but theres not much to really analyze in a vacuum.

I think the design of the androids is interesting in that they look identical to humans except for the Xbox circle on their temple. That likely helps them blend in and gives them more of an impetus to disrupt society. I also found Karas creation fairly hideous, like it looks like some sort of affront to nature. Which, hey, thats kind of what androids made in our image are, right?

The choice of setting this in the future and not giving a lot of future tech apart from robots is curious. American society still looks the same. I dont love David Cage but I appreciate that he and his team had an aesthetic vision they went for, and they seem to have succeeded.

60. Bill Sienkiewicz' New Mutants run

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/6/3/AAALz5AAD0eT.jpg

This one was challenging for me. I can appreciate the unique style thats a cross between hyper-realistic and dreamlike, but I had a hard time really finding things to grab onto with these pictures. It reminds me of the style that permeated American comics in the 80s and 90s, that sort of drab, no-frills art...except thats clearly not with Sienkiewicz is doing here. Hes presenting a combination of that, and an odd dream state.

The pages with the bear present the bear as this massive figure, larger than life, to contrast with the human-sized character. Its very effective. I also love the imposing final image of the character huddled with a blanket that slowly morphs into the demon bear. Wonderful use of colors. The other images, the issue covers, dont have the same impact for me as the pages, particularly the first image, with a fairly straightforward composition of heroes (though I guess its neat that they seem to be emerging from panels).

I respect that Sienkiewicz was doing this sort of thing in a time of limited experimentation. Its certainly unlike any other nomination. However, the competition is fierce and somethings got to wind up here! Apologies to Sienkiewicz I just dont think this style is for me.

Sienkiewicz's artwork still gives me the chills now as when I first read it - that level of surrealist horror was just not being done at Marvel. I love the idea of the art becoming a warped reflection of the characters' mental states and capturing the existential horror of just being a mutant in this world. Incredible stuff.

I skipped around this video. I also watched the sequel trailer, as was recommended:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K37l3-La-Go

Ion Fury and its sequel Phantom Fury seem like love letters to 90s FPS games, and that includes the graphics. This ones going to be tricky to rate because thats an area Im not very familiar with, so I can only judge some of the homages from a distance.

One thing I like about Ion Fury is that the developers really tried to make the graphics authentic in terms of 2d sprites and even some slowdown. The actual areas themselves are fairly boring, but thats probably because theyre emulating old games, so I cant really fault them for that. I appreciate the interface as well, with the guns being somewhat chunky sprites. Really, theres a lot to love and appreciate here; Im just not the best person to do it. Sorry!

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/8/0/AAAjjZAAD1pk.jpg

Its fun to chart the evolution of a series visual design over time. The first two videos for Friendship Is Magic have, apart from the Mane 6, fairly basic NPC design, with a largely interchangeable template. But the pictures show some very creative character design, particularly the first picture, which has like buffalo and dragons and all manner of fun stuff. I appreciated the big musical number in the second video (the song is now in my head, gah) and the choreography was a nice touch. I also like how bright and colorful this world is. I mean, its a show about flying horses, so youd expect rainbows everywhere, but the fact that they follow through on that is good.

Im not sure what else there is to say. The main selling point is the character designs, and those are really only prominent in the pictures. Although I do like Discords design, clearly inspired by a Chinese dragon.

57. Monster Hunter: World
@SSBM_Guy @Bitto (which account should I ping?)
https://imgur.com/a/E5FSkF9
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBfHRcfaUBA

Putting aside the fact that the first image is a bunch of tiny images all in one (some of you really pushed the limits here...), its easy to see that Monster Hunter: World has a distinct visual style. The video does an effective job of capturing the unique setting of a coral landscape that, curiously, does not appear to be underwater! The rich purples and pinks provide great atmosphere and allow for the player character, in a suit of armor, to stand out. I also enjoyed the design of the main monster fought in the video (as per your instructions, I watched the first five minutes). Its threatening when attacking, but pretty cute when asleep!

The second image has an environment thats very different from the coral lands: a woodsy place with open paths and big trees. The monster has very realistic-looking fur. I guess thats neat.

The weakest part of this nominations is all the little monster logos. Some of them are very expressive, but a lot of them seem like recolors of other logos. I get that you cant give every monster a unique little thing (at least Im assuming theyre for each monster?), but the recolors feel uninspired.

MLP: FiM definitely left a huge impact in fandom space. It's pretty interesting also to see how the visual design evolved from earlier generations of MLP. They used to be so...lumpy. lol. I really like FiM's take on them. Though it reminds me that Lauren Faust wanted to make more diverse pony body types but the execs vetoed it because it would mean different casts for the toys. Well, at least until the show really took off and we got more body types later on.

...but then Equestria Girls had the Mane 6 dressed in the same shirt + skirt template which is just infuriating.

Ah well. As for Detroit: Become Human, it was my first PS4 game after basically skipping the PS3 generation! So that really left an impression on me. I think the visual language is very consistent all around, especially with the graphics and the UI. I just like it a lot.

You can just tag me as Bitto. My old username was SSBM_Guy and I requested to change it.

My favorite part of MH:W is actually the little symbols! Without it, MH:W is probably a 8/10. Great, beautiful, but lacking a little in charm. The symbols just make me smile. I love the Aztec/Mayan-influenced look. Unfortunately, yeah, MH:W does suffer from palette swaps, especially in the lategame. Overall, the symbols launch MH:W to a 9.3/10. As for the worlds, Coral Highlands is my favorite, but it's pretty out-of-the-norm for the worlds. All the other worlds are much more grounded in its look. Thinking back, I probably should have nominated one of those instead.

Paper Mario - Probably the best thing about PM's look is the individual designs given to typical Mario enemies, both as your partner and bosses. The paper aesthetic is also very good. It was a smart decision to use that instead of N64 polygons. The Gamecube one makes it even more crisp and it just has a timeless look to it.

League of Legends - The still images are great. Gameplay-wise, I always felt League needed more distinctly clashing colors. It always looks like a blur of green, blue, and some red.

Princess Remedy - Black background is...a little much for me. It definitely makes every icon stand out, though.

Steins;Gate - Image 4 is great. Everything else is fine.

Detroit - I never really enjoyed game graphics that go for "let's be as realistic as possible." It's fine at best and disturbing at worst. Detroit is fine, but I think it's at its best when it's not portraying humans.

Sienkiewicz - I haven't read too many Western comics, but this seems pretty good. I like the colors and the overall style of the art.

Ion Fury - I never played 90s FPSs, but I have seen footage. This is solid. I always enjoy modern things taking inspiration from older aesthetics and highlighting it.

MLP - I always felt MLP is Western animation imitating typical moe anime. It's done very well. The mane 6 are all nice to look at and distinct. Showing the gala dresses was a good choice too; I always enjoyed Fluttershy's look here. The background characters are good for clearly being generic, but still looking distinct.

Detective Conan feels very classic anime, whatever that means. Im no expert on different anime styles. Maybe its the character design? No prettyboys or sexy ladies. As a result it feels like less an anime to me and more like a Western cartoon? But Western cartoons have plenty of prettyboys and sexy ladies, so I dont know. What I do know is I love the bold poses and expressive faces. Poor Conan gets bullied into having his glasses stolen, and then hes riding a horse or something. Theres a lot going on.

I really like image 3, with Conan and some dude (big Conan?) staring each other down. Big Conan has a gun pointed at Little Conan, and Little Conan has a watch(?) pointed at Big Conan. I dont understand the context but I really love the composition.

The video is a bit confusing. Its mostly manga panels. Are these actual panels from the Detective Conan manga, or are they stylized depictions of events from previous series? Style or no, it does come across a little halfhearted to have an OP thats barely animated.

This entry has made me realize there are some series I have conflicting opinions on, and thats okay! There are also some series where I dont know much at all and I need to remind myself that instead of sounding authoritative, I can just throw my arms up and shrug and hope the writeup was at least a little entertaining.

(also apologies to handsomeboy, who was very excited for this topic and is now eliminated entirely! I hope you're still able to stick around and enjoy the rest of things)

Gah I knew I should have nominated one of the fancier OPs. I was really not sure if I should treat the anime and manga as the same visual style.

Let us drown our sorrows in another writeup.

You know, its funny, I could tell this was a Playstation game before I even looked it up. Something about the aesthetic screams Japanese PSX game. This video is very chaotic, but I think its in a good way? The actual gameplay happens so fast and there are so many layers of nonsense happening at any given moment, but its charming and I was generally able to follow along. Its a game I wouldnt want to play but I think would be fun to watch.

I like some of the little touches in the non-gameplay portions, like the afterimages on the menu cursor, and the pulsating continue circle with shifting text. Sanvein certainly oozes style, and isnt that what were here to discuss? It was definitely a unique experience to watch the video, so for that alone its got to be at least a little high in the ranking.

That video makes me want to just cue up a Game Design Doc video to play "BAD DESIGN!" In fact, it might have even been in one.

Here's another (potentially controversial?) writeup:

54. Danganronpa
@Anagram

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/1/3/AACpsLAADwxl.jpg

Danganronpas big visual asset is character design, which is why I assume Anagram gave me two cast shots to work with. The series likes to go big with a lot of designs; I suspect the design comes first some of the time, and then the writers base the characters personalities and backstories off of that.

In the second image (the first game), highlights include bikerboi with heavy eyeshadow and a massive pompadour (he exudes style), swirly haired girl with the red jacket, dude whose hair is bigger than some of the other students bodies, and, of course, Akuma. Some of the designs are plainer, like blonde suit boy, but thats good because if they were all over the top, the effect would be dulled.

The first image (the third game) has fewer characters. The colors of these characters feel a bit more muted and less standout; everyone is in purples and blues. I also dont like how everyones eyes seem the same, compared to the first games cast. Maybe Id feel differently if this was a full cast shot, but these designs are less engaging to me overall. I do enjoy the random little dude in the biker jacket; he sticks out a ton.

One thing I appreciate from a gameplay-design perspective: some of these characters are more sinister-looking than others, but nobody really sticks out as clearly a murderer.

Before retraux gaming was a thing, there was Rakugaki Showtime, a PS1 game with graphics inspired by the ultimate in retro: childhood scribblings. The playable fighters span a multitude of designs from more traditional protagonist fare (like the fighter shown in the video) to robots and screen-stretching opponents. Its clear a lot of love went into the character designs. I actually feel like they could have gone even further, like making the stages themselves and the interactible objects scribblier too.

I also find it charming that several of the fighters have Rayman bodies: no arms, floating hands. Its actually odd that other fighters have all their limbs and some dont. Not a bad thing, just curious.

I dont have a lot to say about this one. I was honestly more intrigued by the gameplay than by the visual design, so I might look up a Lets Play in the near future to see what else the game has to offer!
