I'm just not sure if I should pull the trigger on the purchase. I tried a purple... I doubt I'll ever be able to complete them. Sure over time skill will increase but still.

The difficulty level is definitely much harder than Melody of Memory which was my first foray in rythym games (post guitar hero era)

I know everybody was disappointed like me when FFX wasn't immediately unlockable, so what title did you all choose to start with (so that you may then follow it up with FFX)?

I chose FFXIII because it was the best combination of fewest songs and most familiarity with the OST.

FF7 so I could have Red XIII off the bat. Also has good music so it was a natural first choice!

I haven't played a theatrhythm game since the first one was on mobile. I definitely enjoyed it, and I'm a sucker for FF music. All these reviews, and your comments, are definitely swaying me towards dropping $100 on it though! Will definitely play the demo first, but this definitely scratches the nostalgia itch!

FFII was one of my first picks because I actually enjoy a bunch of the songs from it. Rebel Army and Town are fantastic tracks and better than most of Final Fantasy Music past X.

Actually, maybe the problem is the condition for the fight where everything does double damage. I swear if you miss a couple notes you are already dead.

Hatsune Miku games had a Switch version come out 3-5 years later after Future Tone, and then ported the 15-20 other songs onto the PS4 later for people who had the OG version. Not saying Square will do the same with XVI music, but they "should" be able to do.

Just going back over how evil the original was.
-78 tracks advertised
-26 were opening/ending, mostly prelude and main series theme repeated with no real gameplay
-13 required unlocking through randomized challenge mode on max difficulty
-52 more available as DLC for $1 each, no bundles
-This breaks down to one battle, field/dungeon and story track per game that I could actually play in the base game, for a total of 39
-The DLC is filled with the battle, boss and final boss themes for some of the most popular games

These are part of why I switched to exclusively using the left and right triggers for gameplay rather than buttons, it was the only way I could keep it straight in my head. The biggest one though, was the times when a short hold also had a regular note at the same time as the start and end of the hold

I'm...really not sure what I'm doing. Like, I get that it's a rhythm game, and that part makes sense to me, but I just don't get the window dressing for the game. Okay, we get to make a party of four and they "fight" as we play the song, but...we have zero control over it. Yes, the party is successful when we're successful, but I'm basically completely ignoring the stuff in the background because I have no interaction with it and don't see any reason why I should care. I also don't understand why there are four tracks when at most we're only ever hitting 2 notes. It gives more space for the trombone champ sections, but that seems like a silly reason to stretch the play area.

As for the rhythm game itself, it's...okay? I dislike games that grade you on how accurately you hit notes, and the directional stuff is kinda awful most of the time -- though I'll admit that last part could just be skill issue. I should probably learn to use the shoulder buttons to trigger so I can keep my thumbs on the sticks. Even so, all the directions look more or less the same, so until your eyes are actively looking at them, i.e. it's time to play that note now, it's hard to process which direction you're going to be using.

Don't get me wrong. My general impressions of the game are positive, and I enjoy getting to experience FF music, but I feel like they should have done something more like Metronomicon.

If I had the impression it was meant to be "superfluous," as the post above me says, I'd be fine with ignoring it. The way they push it in the presentation, it feels like they expect it to be an integral part of your experience. This isn't like designing your character in rock band, which has no impact on anything other than you see that character on the half of the screen you aren't using. They've got all these unlockables that are ostensibly tied to your party and their performance, and you're actively slowing down your gameplay loop if you want to address those things.

I think it's just not going to click with you. The party rarely matters outside of completing the extra goal each track as, along with online multiplayer and Endless Mode.

I mean, I use Red XIII, Vivi, Mog and Chocobo so I'd HOPE that team composition rarely matters with a team that weak LOL. If I was forced into using edgelords just to progress I'd be pretty upset.
