poll for ZaziGuado's week

Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
vs.
Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion
vs.
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, January 22 at 8:00 AM EST - though I have recently been leaving them up for longer, so just try to vote by that afternoon
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.

The other topic will be open for the rest of the day.

Here is ZaziGuado on the choices this week:
"No real theme this week. Just three albums I saw and thought would be fun to listen to and then rank. All have had some time to shine in the pop culture spotlight, so there should be some familiarity here for most people.

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Like Bad News
--The band's breakthrough record and a wonderful blend of kinda weird indie rock and mainstream accessibility. People who were growing up in the aughts will immediately recognize Float On.

Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion
--Flamboyant pop goodness. Probably the most lesser known album (at least to Americans?) on this list, but Grace Kelly was a pretty big single and might be easily recognized and some of the other songs have been used in movies and such. Easily the most "fun" album of these three.

Oasis - What's The Story (Morning Glory)?
--I want to be on record saying that Definitely Maybe is the better and more consistent album, but I simply cannot deny the big hits from this album and my curiosity to potentially see how they shake up and if anything else can squeeze in between them."

I've hit wall after wall with this one. I have a good friend, and we sort of came up in this music at the same time. I didn't know Bad Religion. He didn't know Social Distortion. You can gather how that peanut butter and chocolate worked out for a friendship that still lasts 25 years later. This album. It's good, I like it. I am struggling beyond belief to rank the individual tracks.

Really liked this album. Always a fan of being introduced to a good new (to me) punk band. My ranking here feels entirely meaningless, but this is one of those albums that benefits from everything flowing together so well.

My ranking:

No Control
Big Bang
Change of Ideas
You
Progress
The World Won't Stop
Sanity
Anxiety
Automatic Man
Sometimes I Feel Like
Henchman

General Album Comments

Snake5555555555: Overall, Tool hones their style down to a T on this album. Ranging from minimal ambient sections to lots of experimental approaches, I feel like 10,000 Days is a creative endeavor all its own and free from influence that pokes fun at the chaos and mayhem of modern society and tears down the wall between artist and listener. A complex, diverse, ambitious, and innovative album from a major rock act that's one of my favorite albums of all time.

rwlh: Neat album! Lots of variety. I especially enjoyed the top two songs.

Blur: Wings for Marie is one of the greatest ballads ever written for a deceased figure. Rosetta Stoned is a cool, trippy, funny, great but overrated song.

I said it

Steiner (responding to Blur): the section that begins "overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position" and ends with my signature is one of maynard's best ever performances and that alone makes you nuts

ChichiriMuyo: Gonna be honest, I like Tool, but this is definitely not their best album. I'd have much rather listened to Aenima or Lateralus. There's really not much else to say.

Seanchan: I'm so conflicted on how I feel about this album. I've done two listens so far and it's kind of failed to make an impact. All the songs just kind of glom together, and so my attention keeps wandering. Granted, there's nothing "bad" here but the album kind of puts me into a stupor. This might be one of those albums that you're supposed to be paying more attention to the lyrics...which doesn't jibe with how I usually listen to things.
(...)
Well, I did 3 listens and made a ranking list. I can tell you this album will absolutely not stick with me. I think there's a lot to like about the general soundscape but this isn't anything I'll want to revisit.

What it did do is make me want to listen to Mer De Noms again, which is the first album by A Perfect Circle and features the same singer as Tool (not that I really need to tell anyone in this topic). For whatever reason, I owned that album but nothing from A Perfect Circle or Tool other than that.

HBJDubs: My favorite Tool album. I nominated this in the past and I'm glad we get to rank it! For me this has a whopping seven songs that I can place #1, and most times it really comes down to which specific moment in a song am I digging the most right now. At this time, that moment is the intro to Rosetta Stoned, such a banger

ChichiriMuyo: Last thought - I probably should have smoked some pot before listening to this album. It is meant to be listened to while high, no doubt. The problem is that the album that proceeded it was also one I'd say the same thing about, except so much more work went into making those songs. I think that Seanchan said all of these songs "glom together" and yeah... if you're not a "true" fan of the band and any song of this album plays you could be forgiven for mistaking which one it is, or even which album it's from. It definitely sounds like "Tool: The Generic Album That Defines Our Sound." I literally just put on Lateralus and one song in it's absolutely the sound of Tool, yet The Grudge isn't so damn generic and bland as most of 10,000 days. And when I put on AEnima, well that album actually has a self-realized identity compared to 10,000 days. You, and by you I mean the fans of Tool, you will not take half the length of the track to figure out which song you are listening to on Aenima, no matter how high you are. That's compared to 10,000 Days where you could listen to half the album and not know which album you're hearing.

/Rant

Steiner (responding to ChichiriMuyo): regardless of how juvenile the like "oh you should be high to enjoy this" angle is, I just don't get how you can say Rosetta Stoned, The Pot and Wings are aren't all unique things. also;

"except so much more work went into making those songs."
is there a documentary on the making of the albums i missed?

Johnbobb: the album is solid the entire way through but it's that first 40 minutes that really sells it

MarkS2222222222: First time listening to this and I found it surprisingly boring compared to their earlier work

10,000 Days track ranking

11. Viginti Tres (Track #11)
Score: 29 (Average Rank: 10.29/11)
Biggest Fan(s): Snake5555555555, Johnbobb (#8)
Biggest Detractor(s): Steiner, rwlh, Blur, firefdr, ZeroSignal, RyoCaliente, VeryInsane, FoolFantastic, Seanchan, MarkS2222222222 (#11)

Snake5555555555: I love post-metal ambience, it's just really enjoyable to listen to and the atmosphere reminds me of Silent Hill with that dark, sinister bend

10. Lipan Conjuring (Track #6)
Score: 35 (Average Rank: 9.94/11)
Biggest Fan(s): MarkS2222222222 (#8)
Biggest Detractor(s): Snake5555555555, Raetsel_Lapin, HBJDubs, neonreaper, Johnbobb (#11)

Snake5555555555: cool for trying something different but yeah it's pretty forgettable honestly

9. Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) (Track #7)
Score: 67 (Average Rank: 8.18/11)
Biggest Fan(s): rwlh (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): ChichiriMuyo (#11)

Snake5555555555: despite its low-ranking here I actually love this track as a both cinematic prelude to Rosetta Stoned but also as this wonky experimental ambient piece of tension and release that works really well in tandem with the song's theme and I like the spoken dialogue bits too

8. Intension (Track #9)
Score: 97 (Average Rank: 6.53/11)
Biggest Fan(s): ChichiriMuyo (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Snake5555555555, Johnbobb (#10)

Snake5555555555: not much to say about this one, I like it but it's like a less compelling Viginiti Tres to me - it obviously works better when you listen to Right In Two immediately after as intended and if I have to criticize the album just a little is that this album definitely has an obsession with musical preludes

7. Wings for Marie (Pt. 1) (Track #3)
Score: 106 (Average Rank: 6/11)
Biggest Fan(s): firefdr (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): Raetsel_Lapin, MarkS2222222222 (#9)

Snake5555555555: of course it's a lot of build up for Pt 2 but it's got a great texture all its own too and Maynard's vocal delivery after the interlude is the kind of haunting that sticks with you awhile

6. The Pot (Track #5)
Score: 112 (Average Rank: 5.71/11)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): NFUN (#11)

Snake5555555555: deceptively simple instrumentation with obtuse lyricism full of analogies and adages. A brilliant composition that proves that Tool's vocabulary can still be unique and compelling while still basically making a straight-forward pop song.

5. Jambi (Track #2)
Score: 134 (Average Rank: 4.88/11)
Biggest Fan(s): Seanchan, MarkS2222222222 (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): rwlh (#10)

Snake5555555555: I mean did you hear this god damn bridge though

4. Right in Two (Track #10)
Score: 147 (Average Rank: 4.18/11)
Biggest Fan(s): ZeroSignal (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): firefdr (#9)

Snake5555555555: more commentary on violence this time from the celestial viewpoint, it's catchy though I like how the song opens up as the story unfolds and explodes into a more diverse and interesting song the closer it gets to the end.

3. Rosetta Stoned (Track #8)
Score: 152 (Average Rank: 4.24/11)
Biggest Fan(s): Snake5555555555, NFUN, VeryInsane, HBJDubs (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): rwlh (#8)

Snake5555555555: a stream-of-consciousness epic covering an hilarious topic with manic vocal delivery and constant tempo changes to achieve a pulse-pounding & cinematic sound while never at any point taking it seriously.

Johnbobb: this grungy, dirty feeling 11-minute shuffle would've stood out a lot more if the album didn't already have Wings Pt. 2

2. 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) (Track #4)
Score: 175 (Average Rank: 3.29/11)
Biggest Fan(s): Steiner, rwlh, Blur, firefdr, Johnbobb (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Raetsel_Lapin (#8)

Snake5555555555: probably the band's most eloquent song to date, telling a strong and emotional tale as a dedication to Maynard's mother. It combines moody guitar-driven symphonies and expressive lyricism with a gut-wrenching ambience that eventually and evolves explodes into a forceful arrangement, complete with an insane climax - a beautiful song that captures all the emotional complexity of the human condition.

1. Vicarious (Track #1)
Score: 187 (Average Rank: 2.76/11)
Biggest Fan(s): RyoCaliente, Raetsel_Lapin, FoolFantastic, neonreaper (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): firefdr (#6)

Snake5555555555: harshly commentating on our obsessions with real life violence while also being one of the best straight-forward rockers they've ever put out

Blistering fast. Relentless. Even when they give you a moment to catch your breath, they still go hard. This is ten hours of sonic assault in a 26 minute tracklist. I'm not sure if I'd say this is a truly enjoyable album because it's a bit relentless. But I'd venture to say it's a good one. Doing a song ranking is always going to be a bit arbitrary here because, much like last week, these songs all glom together after a while.
