poll for RyoCaliente/VeryInsane/FoolFantastic's week (sorted by artist name)

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
vs.
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
vs.
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, January 15 at 8:00 AM EST - though I have recently been leaving them up for longer, so just try to vote by that afternoon
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.

The other topic will be open for some amount of time if you still want to vote

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead > David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars > Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

And yes, I am voting against my own nomination. I told myself I would nominate Ziggy Stardust before I received the other nominations and one of the albums nominated happened to be among the small handful I like more than it (I also love SAW 85-92 and almost wanted to skip my nomination entirely)

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars > Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 > The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Makes things easier for me; I was heavily considering nominating Ziggy for the competitive week I'm in, but heavily suspected someone else would use it before we reached that point. It was really just a matter of who & when.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 > David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars > The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

  1. Rosetta Stoned (a stream-of-consciousness epic covering an hilarious topic with manic vocal delivery and constant tempo changes to achieve a pulse-pounding & cinematic sound while never at any point taking it seriously.)
  2. Vicarious (harshly commentating on our obsessions with real life violence while also being one of the best straight-forward rockers they've ever put out)
  3. 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2) (probably the band's most eloquent song to date, telling a strong and emotional tale as a dedication to Maynard's mother. It combines moody guitar-driven symphonies and expressive lyricism with a gut-wrenching ambience that eventually and evolves explodes into a forceful arrangement, complete with an insane climax - a beautiful song that captures all the emotional complexity of the human condition.)
  4. Jambi (I mean did you hear this god damn bridge though)
  5. Right in Two (more commentary on violence this time from the celestial viewpoint, it's catchy though I like how the song opens up as the story unfolds and explodes into a more diverse and interesting song the closer it gets to the end.)
  6. The Pot (deceptively simple instrumentation with obtuse lyricism full of analogies and adages. A brilliant composition that proves that Tool's vocabulary can still be unique and compelling while still basically making a straight-forward pop song.)
  7. Wings for Marie (Pt 1) (of course it's a lot of build up for Pt 2 but it's got a great texture all its own too and Maynard's vocal delivery after the interlude is the kind of haunting that sticks with you awhile)
  8. Viginti Tres (I love post-metal ambience, it's just really enjoyable to listen to and the atmosphere reminds me of Silent Hill with that dark, sinister bend)
  9. Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) (despite its low-ranking here I actually love this track as a both cinematic prelude to Rosetta Stoned but also as this wonky experimental ambient piece of tension and release that works really well in tandem with the song's theme and I like the spoken dialogue bits too)
  10. Intension (not much to say about this one, I like it but it's like a less compelling Viginiti Tres to me - it obviously works better when you listen to Right In Two immediately after as intended and if I have to criticize the album just a little is that this album definitely has an obsession with musical preludes)
  11. Lipan Conjuring (cool for trying something different but yeah it's pretty forgettable honestly)

Overall, Tool hones their style down to a T on this album. Ranging from minimal ambient sections to lots of experimental approaches, I feel like 10,000 Days is a creative endeavor all its own and free from influence that pokes fun at the chaos and mayhem of modern society and tears down the wall between artist and listener. A complex, diverse, ambitious, and innovative album from a major rock act that's one of my favorite albums of all time.

would probably vote the Bowie album if it was Scary Monsters or Heroes, but going with mine first

Picked Aphex because the electronica stuff always seems well received here (Moon, The Knife etc), so why not go with this one

havent really participated much because of burnout, but I like Tool so sure Ill do this one

This is the second time in the last couple of years I have argued Rosetta Stoned is overrated among fellow Tool fans and... listened to it again and thought "you bastards are right, I should stop denying that song its greatness." I still agree with what I said though, I just underemphasized its greatness a little bit. There's too many people out there that seem to consider it in the same pantheon as Third Eye, Reflection, Lateralus, Wings for Marie Pt 2, (now I would add) Descending - all of their very best. I can't get on board with it.

Almost want to say fuck it and put it above Intension on my list, but I can't do it. That was the first Tool song I learned on guitar and it's basically the Disposition of this album and Disposition rules. But yeah, the part Steiner is talking about is what makes the whole song.

I'd been wanting to nominate Tool but was worried that it would easily overtake any of the albums that I was curious to see the board rank. I was so close to picking Weird Al instead, that was a great nomination! I originally wanted Aenima, contemplated Undertow and Lateralus, but switched to 10,000 Days because it's the one Tool album I just don't know very well.

I listened to Aenima and Lateralus like a decade ago and nothing got through to me and, outside of listening to Fear Inoculum when it came out, I haven't really thought about Tool in any meaningful capacity. I feel like I should probably revisit those earlier albums.

Stinkfist has at least risen on my song list with time, so maybe I'll find something this time around

I'm so conflicted on how I feel about this album. I've done two listens so far and it's kind of failed to make an impact. All the songs just kind of glom together, and so my attention keeps wandering. Granted, there's nothing "bad" here but the album kind of puts me into a stupor. This might be one of those albums that you're supposed to be paying more attention to the lyrics...which doesn't jibe with how I usually listen to things.
