By now, fans of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books the novels adapted into the HBO Max series Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are used to mildly exhausting updates on his progress on the 11-years-overdue next novel in the series, The Winds of Winter. An episode of the Comedy Central series Stephen Colbert's Tooning Out The News has the latest from Martin, who says sounding fairly sincere about it that he's written around 1,100 to 1,200 pages of the book so far, and just has "another 400, 500 pages" to go.

In this exclusive clip from Martin's episode of the show, scheduled to air after The Daily Show on Dec. 7 at 11:45 p.m. EST, animated host Dr. Ike Bloom (voiced by Inspector Ike's Ikechukwu Ufomadu) takes Martin to task, calling him "a struggling writer let me revise that, truly pathetic who is having trouble meeting deadlines." He calls up hyper-prolific crime writer James Patterson, asking him for advice about how Martin can turn his work around faster.

Patterson first asks how far past his deadline Martin is, and seems taken aback to hear how long the book has been delayed. He suggests that Martin has "writer's constipation," and advises him to change up his writing methods, in terms of still using a DOS computer and the WordStar word processor: "Try something else, then, 'cause that's not working."

Ok hes never finishing it now. And there was supposed to be another book after this one, and with so many lingering plot lines I think its needed. The story is larger than in the show, with the introduction of the faux targaryen being added to the list of would be kings. I remember the plot being hated back when the book came out cause it came out of nowhere and too late at this stage of the story.

Bruh why wouldn't he just split it into two parts at this point, it has gotten ridiculous.

How long has it been since the last book came out? I haven't read any of them, but I am guessing like 10 years at this point. So a minimum of 5 years if he is managing 100 pages a year.
I still wonder what will happen first, him finishing this book, or Rothfuss finishing the third book in his series.

Someone will finish it after he dies. I think that happened with Wheel of Time or some other fantasy series. The wife wrote the last book I think

Are requests like that in a will legally binding? Why does he care if he's dead?

i don't understand why people say this. i think the only people who say this are people who have only read Brandon Sanderson's stuff and not ASoIaF. maybe they watched GoT. GRRM's and Sanderson's writing styles are very different. Sanderson doesn't even like ASoIaF and has no interest in writing it, much less reading it past the first book. and there would be absolutely no reason why GRRM would want someone like Sanderson to finish writing his books. Sanderson's beliefs and preferences on what he likes to write about make him a complete mismatch for such a proposition.

Yeah I love Sanderson but no way could he pick up GRRMs books. Completely different styles.

Yeah it's incredibly selfish and benefits nobody is why I was wondering.
