this is why books are dumb the stories never end and no one is held accountable for being lazy in finishing it at least with tv shows and movies theres multiple people involved that rely on the story coming out in a quick enough fashion

Tons of TV shows don't properly end. Most actually. Every fall, a shit ton of new shows begin on TV. Like 80% of them get canceled after 1 season. Even shows that last multiple seasons sometimes suddenly get unexpectedly canceled, when the final episode made ended on a cliffhanger. I think that happened with the old The Fugitive TV show

If the story is worth watching it will conclude, especially in today's age.

There was a show like 10 years ago about a nuke going off in every major American city at the same time. It might have been called Jericho.... I don't remember what channel it was on. About people in Kansas surviving after the US government falls

It got canceled after 1 season and people went insane with a campaign to bring it back. Seaaon 2 finally happened with so much pressure. Then it got canceled again. Season 3 came in the form of a comic book to finish it. But I never read the comic. I think i saw it in a comic shop once

People liked Jericho but the studio just didn't want to keep it around

So fans brought it back twice but it still failed.

Sounds like the majority of people didn't find the story compelling enough.

A huge part of the problem was that when they filmed the second season, they didn't have a place for it in the schedule initially, so it was a mid-season replacement for something that got cancelled. Because it was filmed and ready to go and just didn't have an airdate, it inevitably leaked online.

Everyone who had been using the internet to campaign for a new season then used the internet to pirate said season, and so when it was finally on telly they didn't watch it, because they'd already seen it, and so the ratings were abysmal. It was like an accidental version of the "convince the studio to give Morbius a second run in the cinema then don't go" meme.

Yeah. The decision to cancel it after the first season is still bullshit and I'm still salty about it, but tbh looking at the ratings for the second season you unfortunately can't have any complaints about it being canned that time.

It's especially frustrating because IIRC a lot of the cast had got new jobs in between cancellation and un-cancellation, and so in a labour of love were travelling to the location and filming S2 in the breaks in their schedule for their new gigs.

I still remember when the first book came out. I was reading the back cover at a book store to see what it was about. I thought it sounded interesting. But I was reading another series at the time. I figured I'd wait until a few more books were out, and the series was closer to done. Glad I never got around to it and would have to wait over a decade for another book!

I first heard of it from a card game based on the books. Around like 2005 or 2006. I was friends with some people who played it. They told me it was from a book series I had never heard of. I didn't think about it again until the hbo series began

Martin doesn't have any kids afaik, otherwise I'd suspect he's sitting on those finished scripts on purpose so that they can be released posthumously as a form of inheritance.

No, I mean the only way you'll get an ending to ASoIaF is the same way WoT fans got an ending to their series. It's going to be with some other writer relying on GRRM's notes after he dies.
that may be, but it's not going to be Brandon Sanderson

none of this is true at all. this basically boils down to "popularity = quality", and that is so far from being true. plenty of TV shows worth watching don't get concluded, and plenty of shitty shows that only appeal to the lowest common denominator just keep going and going and going, and anyone with any taste at all is just like who tf is still watching this shit. like Grey's Anatomy, or basically any "reality" show.

and this isn't as sharp a divide as you claim between books and shows either. in fact, i'd be willing to bet that on average more book series get concluded than TV shows. it is very difficult to get a book traditionally published, much less a book serie, and agents and publishers tend to go for projects that will likely be a sure thing. the rate of TV show cancellations by contrast is astoundingly high. network TV especially will greenlight shows they KNOW will not last more than a season or maybe two, just to have something to fill a timeslot.
