I didn't scroll down far enough to see it only has the first 30 episodes, that's lame. Hopefully Netflix will add the rest before too long. I'll watch what I can, and then finish everything else while waiting to see.

(This came out in September so I think it counts as an airing show)

BONUS. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
https://myanimelist.net/anime/42310/Cyberpunk__Edgerunners
Summer 2022 (10 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 8.64/10
Best Character: Rebecca

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OifiVCnFKzM

Premise: A young man named David Martinez is struggling to find a path in life in the cyberpunk dystopia that is Night City. He winds up being drawn into a group of edgerunners, cyborg criminals willing to do any job.

The Good: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a sci-fi action anime. It's set in the same universe as the video game, but I should state up front that I never played it. I know absolutely nothing about it. I never even watched a trailer. This anime just got such a good reception that I decided to check it out anyway! I hoped it'd be a pleasant surprise like Arcane (which isn't an anime, but is another Netflix show based on a controversial video game). Edgerunners sadly wound up falling a bit flat for me, but it still had good parts.

The production values were undeniably fantastic. It crafted the look and feel of the cyberpunk setting really well, and the animation was great the whole way through. I also enjoyed the soundtrack enough to find and listen to one song in particular over and over. The action scenes all had good tension. They were full of interesting cyberpunk abilities and gore. On a technical level, I cant complain about anything. As for the story, I liked most of the characters. David and Lucy had a good dynamic when they were together. In such a hellish setting, I appreciated that they didn't let it constantly weigh on them. There were lots of scenes where they were just having a good time, even when they were slaughtering goons with cyber powers.

The Bad: My big problem with Edgerunners is basically a nitpick. I tried to take this in stride and look past it, but it wound up souring me on most of the story. (Fair warning, I'm only going to talk about something that's pretty central to the setting even from the very beginning, but the fact that it bugged me this much might hint at certain events even though I won't mention any particular plot points. I guess minor spoiler warning). I straight-up don't like the idea of cyberpsychosis, which is when people with too many implants break down mentally and go insane. On a meta level, I hate it when neat settings arbitrarily limit themselves like that. Here are all these cool implants, but don't you dare use them! It just feels lame. Beyond that, on a narrative level, the story of Edgerunners dealt a lot with cyberpsychosis. They fought some high-powered goons, and it was always a looming danger the more implants the characters received. Despite that, I never felt like the story gave it the focus it deserved. Everyone seemed to think they could just make it through with willpower alone, even after seeing multiple times that it doesn't work. The way they nagged each other about having too many implants felt more like they were talking about quitting smoking and not, like, you might seriously go berserk and need to be put down like a rabid dog. It's one thing to have characters who are numbed to the horrors of their reality. Edgerunners had a lot of that and I liked it. Cyberpsychosis, however, is essentially an occupational hazard, yet no one cared about it enough to have a plan for dealing with its inevitable effects. It just felt stupid to me. I know this one complaint is kind of petty, but lots of big moments trace back to this and all of them fell flat for me as a result.

Overall: Like I said, I don't know anything about the Cyberpunk video game. I don't know if cyberpsychosis is gameplay mechanic in it. I'm guessing it isn't, though, because nothing sounds less fun to me than having a bunch of cool cybernetic implants only to arbitrarily limit how many the player can safely use. Edgerunners had lots of good things, including great production values, a well-realized futuristic setting, and interesting characters. I just couldnt get past how much I hated cyberpsychosis. It wound up being too integral to the plot for me to ignore. I'll still likely give Edgerunners a middling rank because there were large parts of it I genuinely enjoyed. Sadly, sometimes a relatively tiny nitpick is enough to ruin the larger whole.

cyberpunk is a multimedia series from the 80s
Shows how much I know about it, I wasnt aware of that!

Anyway, since we're past the deadline for recommendations, this is all I have left! As for Monster, I'll see if I can track down the second half of the series some other way if Netflix continues to be lame. Crunchyroll doesn't have the Kaguya OVA, but it does have one for Mob. I'll also watch the Evangelion movie if it's available on Netflix, I forgot to check. As you can see below, I've already started everything except for the Funimation ones, which I'm doing last. Thanks again for your patience everyone. This will guaranteed be done by the end of January (ideally a week or so before that).

REMAINING: 265 episodes
Neon Genesis Evangelion (2/26)
Monster (16/74)
Searching for the Full Moon (6/52)
Cromartie High School (8/26) *eps are half length
Code Geass (11/25 S1, 0/25 S2)
Mob Psycho 100 (1/13 S2, 0/1 OVA, 0/12 S3)
Kaguya-sama: Love is War (6/12 S2, 0/13 S3)
Sakura Quest (0/25)
The Tatami Galaxy (0/11)

(Airimg shows awaiting write-ups)
Raven of the Inner Palace
The Little Lies We All Tell
Bocchi the Rock
Chainsaw Man
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury
My Master Has No Tail

The final ranking, not counting movies or dropped anime, will be a total of 292!

About NGE:

The movie End of Evangelion is on Netflix. If you like the show, there are also four movies on Prime which are a retelling of the original series. The first one is pretty much the same as the first third of the show or so with some minor differences, but the second movie is when they start to make some big changes. I'll let you know what I think of it all when you finish the Netflix stuff.

Unrelated, Monster not having a dub on Netflix is lame, I might just watch it elsewhere. I did find a place you can watch it all, but I need to test it to make sure it doesn't have buffering issues or something like that.

BONUS. Chainsaw Man
https://myanimelist.net/anime/44511/Chainsaw_Man
Fall 2022 (12 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 8.72/10
Best Character: Makima

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFlDRhvM4L0

Premise: Denji, together with a chainsaw devil named Pochita who he befriended, has been working for the yakuza. He's betrayed one day and needs to merge with Pochita to survive, which turns Denji into a chainsaw man and leads to a career as a licensed devil hunter.

The Good: Chainsaw Man is an action anime set in a world where monsters called devils spawn to represent any concept that people are afraid of. There's a zombie devil, a chainsaw devil, even more esoteric ones like a future devil or eternity devil. Hunters go around trying to kill the more dangerous ones, and Denji gets taken in by a government agency after he turns into the titular chainsaw man. I never read the manga for this, but I've read discussions on the anime board about whether or not this is a good adaptation. A lot of people seemed to think that it got the tone wrong and everything should've been sillier. The charm for them is that this is a bleak setting with serious dangers, but Denji and Power and others are goofs who never react seriously to any of it. The reason I bring this up is because I think it's interesting how much that differs from my (admittedly uneducated) opinion! I thought Chainsaw Man was plenty silly, and that waa my biggest problem with it.

Since this is the good section, I'll say that I really love the setting. The idea of all these different devils with unique powers is one of those inherently interesting ideas that tickles my imagination. I would never get tired of an episodic show where they battled a different devil each week. There are also other interesting ideas like fiends, which are devils who have taken over human corpses and gained different abilities. The animation in this was consistently decent, and the moments where it really counted, like the battles, were usually great. As for the characters, I liked Makima quite a bit. She was cool and mysterious.

The Bad: Like I alluded to above, Chainsaw Man just didn't take itself seriously enough for my tastes. Instead of focusing on the devil hunting aspect, it was mostly about Denji being horny or Power being zany or Himeno being drunk or Kobeni being over-the-top scared. They went on one actual devil hunt in the whole season, which was easily my favorite couple of episodes, but even there the characters all had their personalities taken to such goofy extremes. Like, they were in a serious situation and Denji just went and took a nap, ugh. The setting has a lot of things I find interesting in theory, but between the goofy characters and the story focusing more on them rather than the devils, it never explored the things I wanted it to. The tone of the whole anime just wasn't my thing, sadly.

Overall: Before starting it, I suspected that Chainsaw Man wouldn't be my favorite thing. Still, I'm glad I gave it a shot. There are a lot of legitimately great ideas in the setting, and the production values were good enough to keep things enjoyable. I didn't like most of the characters, the story, or the show's overall goofy tone. I didn't despise any of those things either, though. Chainsaw Man wound up not being for me, but thats okay. I'll still probably give ot a 4/10 or so, which is a respectable ranking from me!

BONUS. My Master Has No Tail
https://myanimelist.net/anime/49533/Uchi_no_Shishou_wa_Shippo_ga_Nai
Fall 2022 (13 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 6.71/10
Best Character: Mameda

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZr4vWg8YIQ

Premise: A young tanuki named Mameda wants to follow the tradition of tricking humans with her shapeshifting, but its difficult and dangerous in the modern era. She decides to learn rakugo instead, a storytelling art that can spellbind an audience.

The Good: My Master Has No Tail is a comedy about a cute tanuki girl named Mameda learning rakugo from a reluctant master, Bunko. I'll say up front that I know nothing about rakugo other than what this anime showed me. As I'll talk about in the bad section, I don't think this was a good introduction to the art form. I still appreciated the emotion that a few of the performances carried. Mameda was cute, and I liked moments like when she realized that sucking people into a rakugo story was essentially tricking them, which is her lifelong dream. The animation in this also at least wasn't terrible. Those are the only nice things I can say.

The Bad: Rakugo was obviously a big part of this, and it was terrible. I don't know how a normal rakugo performance should go. Maybe they actually are as great as the audience seems to think. My Master Has No Tail just couldnt capture any of that magic. One story was said to take exactly ten minutes, but the anime cut it down to one or two, which ruined the flow. There was always something else going on during the stories too, like a character's thoughts or some other situation that made the rakugo a secondary concern. To make up for this, there's a segment at the end of each episode where Mameda explains the rakugo story. The only thing worse than a poorly delivered humorous story is having someone painstakingly overexplain what the joke was supposed to be. Large parts of this anime are merely mediocre, no worse than the usual bargain bin show. The awful rakugo was what really dragged it down for me.

Overall: I only watched My Master Has No Tail because I felt like I should watch something else from this season and a cute tanuki girl seemed like it might be fun. Mameda was indeed the best part of the anime, but almost everything else was mediocre. All the other characters were annoying in different ways, especially two they introduced halfway through who had grating speech quirks (one girl spoke incredibly slowly, and another guy coughed after every word). I didn't expect this to be a new favorite, but I at least hoped it'd be a bland list-filler. Instead, thanks in large part to the awful rakugo, this will almost certainly be a new 2/10.

Anyway, I'll do another airing anime write-up in a bit. As for actual recommendations, I'll do a few next week! The rest of Monster still isn't on Netflix, so I'll start looking into finding it elsewhere. I'm almost done Full Moon, though, and I'll try to finish Evangelion this weekend.

BONUS. Bocchi the Rock
https://myanimelist.net/anime/47917/Bocchi_the_Rock
Fall 2022 (12 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 8.99/10
Best Character: Gotou Hitori

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlSbEP4V-gI

Premise: Gotou Hitori learned how to play the guitar hoping it would someday help her overcome her social anxiety. Years later, she finally gets a chance to join a band, but she's still as awkward as ever.

The Good: Bocchi the Rock is a cute girls comedic music anime. Hitori joins a band with three other girls, and they do things like practice, earn money at a part-time job, and put on the occasional show. Hitori is nicknamed Bocchi because of her intense social anxiety (hitoribocchi translates to something like "all alone"). As a random aside, I'm tired of characters having pun names like this, especially since this particular pun was already used in the far superior Hitoribocchi anime. Still, I enjoy shy girls (Watamote, Komi Can't Communicate, etc) and I generally enjoy music anime. Bocchi the Rock did a fine job of bringing those two genres together, though I didn't love it as much as a lot of other people did.

In terms of good things, I enjoyed all the characters. Ryou was kind of scummy and the drunk lady wasn't my favorite, but Kita and Nijika were fun. I also loved Bocchi. Her social anxiety is portrayed in a very over-the-top and artistic way. Any time she got too nervous or had a mental meltdown, the art style and animation would shift in lots of interesting ways to represent it. I couldn't relate to Bocchi as much as I have with other shy characters because it all felt too zany, but she was undeniably entertaining. I really loved some of the minor characters too, like Bocchi's little sister and their cute dog. There were plenty of hilarious jokes about Bocchi being insanely anxious, and her personality led to a lot of fun interactions.

The Bad: Theres nothing that Bocchi the Rock does wrong. It simply didn't resonate with me as much as a lot of similar anime have. I usually relate to shy characters, but Bocchi was so zany and over-the-top that I just couldnt with her. Like, it's a funny joke that she first played onstage while wearing a cardboard box to hide herself, but it isnt exactly realistic or relatable. As for the music aspect, I thought it was merely fine. I didn't mention music at all in the good section of this write-up because, outside of the shows being well-animated, I don't have a whole lot else to say.

Overall: Given how it merges two genres that I usually love, shy girls and music, I was surprised how little of an impact Bocchi the Rock had on me. Like I said, it didn't do anything wrong. I just couldnt really relate to Bocchi on any level beyond her being a funny character, and even then I thought the Bocchi from Hitoribocchi was a lot funnier. There are no big negatives I can point to, and there were a lot of interesting or hilarious moments. Overall, though, this anime will end up ranking almost exactly in the middle of everything I've seen.

I did, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone. I just really loved Mameda, so maybe I that caused me to overlook the flaws the show had. There was one rakugo performance that made me laugh, and it was intentionally unintentional. I just saw it as a narrative tool rather than its own comedic thing. I didn't find it funny like the characters in the show, but I don't find manzai funny either, so I just chalked it up to a cultural barrier.

Bocchi the Rock does a great job having its music performances feel like actual parts of the story as opposed to just an excuse to show off a music video, but I wouldn't exactly claim that it has good music--I think the songs were pretty middling overall.

The show overall was fantastic though.

I did Monday's write-up earlier than usual because I knew it would end up being too long to type out on my phone at work. It's almost 1200 words!

BONUS. Searching for the Full Moon
https://myanimelist.net/anime/122/Full_Moon_wo_Sagashite
Spring 2002 (52 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 7.94/10
Best Character: Kouyama Mitsuki
Recommended by: @Mega_Mana

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igeYwGslD-M

Premise: Twelve-year-old Kouyama Mitsuki has throat cancer, which threatens her dream of becoming a singer. Then two spirits of death arrive and tell her she only has one year left to live. Realizing she no longer has time to wait, and with the help of shinigami magic from Takuto and Meroko, Mitsuki transforms into the professional singer known as Full Moon!

The Good: Searching for the Full Moon is a supernatural romantic comedy musical drama, and it somehow manages to excel at every single one of those genres. The premise alone hints at some heavy themes. Its about a little girl with throat cancer who only has one year left, so it should come as no surprise that some of this is sad. Mitsuki has two dreams she fears will go unfulfilled. One is to become a singer, which is difficult when her illness makes singing painful. The second is that she wants to finally tell her childhood friend Eichi that she loves him, but he moved away years ago and she doesnt know where to. The arrival of the shinigami duo, Takuto and Meroko, sadly confirms that Mitsuki will soon die. However, they also give her a chance to achieve her dreams. Takutos magic temporarily removes her cancer and turns her into a sixteen-year-old, allowing Mitsuki to become a singer called Full Moon. As her popularity grows, she hopes her music and her feelings will reach Eichi before its too late.

As much as I loved it, Im not sure I would call Searching for the Full Moon the best at anything. There are funnier comedies, sadder tragedies, more heartfelt romances, and several anime with much better music. However, it manages to do a great job at each of those aspects, and the result was simply magical. Ill start by talking about Mitsuki since shes the foundation for everything else. I absolutely loved her. Most of the time shes a lot of fun, full of optimism and energetic cheerfulness. Shes also acutely aware of her illness and her rapidly approaching fate. I was amazed at how well the story managed to balance those two emotional halves. Mitsuki strives to enjoy herself and do her best both in her regular life and in the singing world as her alter ego Full Moon, but setbacks and depressing things can still get her down in realistic ways.

I loved all the other characters too. Each of the major ones have a satisfying arc. The shinigami duo Takuto and Meroko are the obvious standouts. Their job is to make sure nothing interferes with Mitsukis fated death, but they also struggle with the sad responsibility of essentially having to kill a nice little girl who is still so full of life. Using their magic to help her achieve her dreams goes against a bunch of shinigami rules, but they do it anyway, and I loved watching the three of them grow closer. Mitsukis doctor, Wakaouji, and Full Moons manager, Ooshige, were also amazing because they both did their best to support her. Antagonistic characters like the rival singer Madoka or Mitsukis music-hating grandmother managed to have great storylines too. Even someone as minor as Tanaka, the Kouyama familys maid, had some hilarious moments. The story even managed to make me care about the largely absent Eichi.

My favorite thing about this show was how well it nailed whatever emotions it was going for in each particular episode. Some were comedic slice-of-life about a cute little girl and her stuffed animals that were actually spirits of death. I loved goofy situations like when they struggled to maintain a web of lies by transforming Mitsuki back and forth between her normal self and Full Moon depending on who they were dealing with. I also loved following her musical career. It explored the highs and lows of success and scandal in interesting ways, and the songs were all great. As a sucker for sad stories, I also enjoyed the episodes where tragedy became the focus. Even aside from Mitsukis illness, there was one mostly standalone episode that introduced a whole new character and made me care about them so hard that I was crying by the end of it.

Even though I watched this on youtube with mediocre video quality and a distracting digital clock imprinted in the corner of the screen, I still thought the animation was pretty good! In conclusion, just about everything about Searching for the Full Moon was charming.

The Bad: I had to ignore the age gap in the romance. I understand why Mitsuki needs to be twelve. Idol careers start at roughly sixteen and shinigami magic needs to age her up a few years to make it less likely shell be recognized. I dont see why Eichi needed to be six years older than her, though. The story wouldnt change at all if they were the same age, so I pretended that they were. A story about a twelve-year-old wanting to confess to an eighteen-year-old would be difficult to root for. Since I wanted to root for Mitsuki, I just headcanoned that issue away.

The other problem is that, especially for fifty-two episodes, Full Moons music catalogue is a little sparse. I complained about a 2022 anime, Ya Boy Kongming, because it repeated the same song several episodes in a row. I felt like retroactively apologizing to YBK because Full Moon sang Myself over and over for like twenty episodes! Maybe Ive just been spoiled by modern idol anime that have a new song every episode, I dunno. I still enjoyed the music, I just wanted a bit more variety.

Overall: Like I mentioned earlier, Searching for the Full Moon isnt the best at anything. It doesnt have my favorite romance. It isnt the funniest anime, and it wasnt the one that hit me in the feels the hardest. I cant even say its the best idol anime because Love Live Sunshine and Zombie Land Saga both blow it out of the water in terms of music. However, the real strength of Searching for the Full Moon is that it managed to bring all of those different things together. I enjoyed all those aspects individually, but my final opinion is that this anime is greater than the sum of its parts. This ranking isnt finalized yet, but it is my tentative number three favorite of all time, and, even if that shifts down a bit once Ive thought about it, I doubt itll go any lower than seventh. Thank you very much for recommending this, Mega_Mana! Since it isnt on streaming, this is an anime I can almost guarantee Id have never watched otherwise. Since it is the newest addition to not just my top ten, but my top five, Im eternally grateful that you got me to watch it.

Glad you liked it so much! I agree that it could use more songs. The main one, Searching for the Full Moon, is awesome, but variety would be nice. The other thing I was a little disappointed by was Mitsuki surviving in the end. I mean, I get why they did it, but a tearjerker ending would've been nice too.

I was surprised at how much I loved it. Everything was consistently charming, and it had a great mood the whole way through. There were comedic moments where the shinigami were in their stuffed animal forms getting swept up in a zany situation. Then there were serious moments too, and somehow the two moods never felt conflicting. It was impressive, and just overall a really nice anime to watch. Definitely a worthy addition to my top ten.

Full Moon ending spoilers

I didn't mind Mitsuki surviving. Eichi and the heartbreak of the few episodes after that was tearjerking enough for me. Plus I was glad Mitsuki and Takuto found each other in the end... though I hope he was reborn as a sixteen year-old at most because if he's his actual age, their relationship is a thirteen year-old and a guy who is like twenty-four.

The Good: The Little Lies We All Tell is a comedy anime about the misadventures of the four main characters as they each try to keep their secret from the others. The episodes are mostly situational gags, so there isn't a deep plot or anything, but the jokes are were good enough to carry it for me. I enjoyed each of the secrets the girls had. It was fun seeing the contrast of Rikka the alien's thoughts and actions, she pretends to be a cute little girl while her thoughts are those of a hardened intergalactic soldier. Chiyo is genuinely clueless and ditzy due to being raised by an isolated ninja clan, but she's also frighteningly capable when it comes to things related to her training. I also enjoyed Tsubasa, who was forced to impersonate his twin sister. His secret is the most mundane, but it led to a lot of great moments where the others compliment his femininity and he's secretly disappointed about it. Sekine was still easily my favorite character. I loved the jokes that came from her ability to read minds. She knows Rikka is an alien and Chiyo a ninja, but self-preservation leads Sekine to hide that knowledge. Instead, she tries to get ahead of the wacky ideas the others have, which was always fun. I'm a fan of this kind of off-the-wall quasi-random humor, and both the premise and the cast lent itself to it well.

The Bad: I don't have any major complaints. Some of the situations weren't as funny as others, but that would be true in any show like this, and I don't recall any episodes being outright bad.

Overall: The Little Lies We All Tell was a solid comedy about four zany characters with fun secrets. I enjoyed its style of humor. Sekine knew most of what was going on, which led to lots of great reactions when Chiyo or Rikka were about to unknowingly do something insane. This will be a 7/10 in my final ranking because it didn't resonate with me enough to rise into my favorites, but it was a fun anime and I have no major complaints.

(Another write-up that's earlier than usual because I knew it'd be too long to do on my phone at work. On Monday we had 1200 words about a new 10/10! Now it's time for 1000 words about a show that's... not even close to a 10/10. I'm sorry HBJDubs. Just like with Psycho Pass, I hope my dislike of an anime you enjoy doesn't offend you.)

BONUS. Neon Genesis Evangelion
https://myanimelist.net/anime/30/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion
Fall 1995 (26 episodes) plus 1 movie
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 8.34/10
Best Character: Katsuragi Misato
Recommended by: @HBJDubs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fShlVhCfHig

Premise: Mysterious beings called Angels are attacking humanity, and humanoid robots called Evangelions are used to fight them. Ikari Shinji is one of the only people who can pilot an Eva, which forces him to reunite with the father who abandoned him years ago.

The Good: Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha anime. It has a lot more going on than just that one genre tag, but, after struggling for ten minutes just to write that mediocre summary for the premise, Im officially giving up on wrapping my head around this show. Since this is the good section, Ill say that the story had some interesting ideas. I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the later parts or the movie, mostly because it was more straightforward and used fun concepts to differentiate the angel battles. I really liked that episode with the power outage, for example. It was neat seeing them get into the base through maintenance corridors and such. While Im obviously thirty years too late to truly appreciate it, the animation was also pretty good.

The Bad: I hated Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now that Ive said that, let me clarify it before fans accuse me of sacrilege. Im not claiming it was objectively bad or anything. In fact, unlike all the other anime that I hate, NGE didnt offend me at all. There are some anime that feel as if they were designed to appeal to me specifically. In AICO, for example, every aspect resonated with me. This anime was the exact opposite. NGE felt like it was designed not to appeal to me at all.

For starters, Im a big fan of stories where character capabilities and enemy dangers are made clear. In Knights of Sidonia (another mecha anime), I understood the alien Gauna, what their weaknesses were, how the human mechas worked, and so on. NGE felt like it went out of its way to obfuscate as much of these aspects as possible. Ill be the first to admit that I can be an idiot sometimes, so theres a chance a lot of this just went over my head, but I never understood the capabilities of the Evas. Sometimes they were downed in a single blow and sometimes they could withstand an intense beating. Sometimes they got strange new powers but other times they didnt. The Angels were all different, and what they could or couldnt do felt random so there was no way to really plan against them. While the battles were well-animated and unique, the flow of the fights felt constricted by the whims of the plot. I could never guess whether an attack would succeed or just bounce harmlessly off the Angels mystical shield. Im not a fan of that.

As for the characters, I struggled to pick a favorite because I didnt really like anyone. They were all interwoven into the themes. Since the themes didnt resonate with me, I mostly just felt annoyed at everyone for being mopey or hesitant or callous. The setting had some interesting ideas. I like the concept of humanity rebuilding while fighting an unknowable foe. Sadly, most of those ideas were confusing or never explored. One conversation near the end made me laugh because they threw out a half dozen new bits of terminology like White Moon or whatever, and none of those words were ever explained. What even is the Spear of Longinus and why did it do the things it did? I dunno, and I could say that about almost everything.

What really dragged NGE down in my ranking, though, was just the overall way the story was presented. The last few episodes and the movie were peak nonsense, but, looking back, the whole show had varying degrees of this narrative style. I simply didnt enjoy stuff like the way it repeated things for thematic emphasis, the ill-fitting religious symbolism (which, now that Ive looked it up, apparently didnt actually mean anything), or how it frequently felt like it was using insane imagery seemingly for the sake of it. The entire climax of the movie was mind-boggling in a bad way because, while I think I understood what happened on a surface level, I have no idea how the things that appeared onscreen represented it. For example, why did it lapse into real-world footage for a bit near the end? I dunno, but that shot of a real-life cat was cute at least.

Overall: I feel bad for having such a negative opinion for Neon Genesis Evangelion, because I know a lot of people really love it. I struggle to understand why (and not just because I didnt enjoy it personally, its just difficult to imagine something as weird as this appealing to a mainstream audience), but I know this anime is exceedingly popular. Sadly, it didnt appeal to me at all. I could see someone loving this if the themes resonated with them or they related to the characters or if they enjoyed the strange visuals and the way the story presented itself. For me, though, all of those aspects were handled in a way that seemed designed to push me away.

Still, Im glad I finally watched this, if only because now I can better understand its influence on anime. For example, it turns out everything I hated about Darling in the FranXX was ripped off wholesale from NGE. Thats good to know! Thanks for recommending this, HBJDubs. Much like Psycho Pass, however, I hope you arent offended that I didnt like it. Akudama Drive aside, it appears that we have very different tastes in anime! This will end up ranking in the 1/10s alongside Darling in the FranXX, but, like I mentioned at the start of the bad section, NGE didnt offend me. Most of the 1/10s are shows that did something that disgusted me. With this anime, it simply didnt appeal to me at all, and I couldnt justify ranking it any higher because of that.

I never totally figured out how Evangelion got as popular as it did either. I more or less liked it but it's a very hit-or-miss show. I've always thought its popularity had as much to do with timing as anything.

I will say I think it's (deliberately) a show that's very difficult to engage with on a literal level. It basically sinks or swims by how well its thematic content lands with you.

(Well, ok, I guess there's also people that can enjoy shows purely on their technical merits, which are quite good in this case, but I have so little in common with this type of anime fan that I tend to just ignore them)

I definitely think Evangelion got a massive boost because it was a surreal "adult" anime and had well designed waifubait characters right in time for internet fandoms to develop. That, plus mechs, Shinji resonating a lot with Japanese people and the meme potential because of all the super dumb stuff put it in a pretty good spot. Also, the merch. There's so much of it in Japan and I think having a controversial ending probably marketed it a ton too.

I think anyone who plans to see a lot of anime should watch it just because of its massive impact on the medium. That said, I can't blame anyone who refuses to finish it because it's just not very fun for a lot of its runtime (just about all of it, if you don't like surreal shit).

Three of the main things NGE had going for it:

  1. It's a very good looking show, and not just in terms of pure animation. The direction is generally outstanding.
  2. The story is heavily based on the author's depression, and a lot of people connect with that.
  3. Asuka and Rei kinda created their archetypes and people really love them

Evangelion is one of my favorite anime series, but I have to agree with this. The actual plot doesn't make any sense without explanations from ancillary works, and getting into all that takes a lot of time investment for very little payoff. It's everything else that makes the show good.

This is probably the big reason I disliked it, then. I can definitely enjoy stories with a big focus on themes and symbolism (like Revue Starlight) but I personally need them to have a literal foundation that can be enjoyed on its own too. Just my preference, I guess.

If I had to pick one of those two, it's easily Rei. I usually don't mind tsunderes, but it comes down to their percentages of tsun and dere. Asuka was too tsun for me. Rei was at least cool and mysterious.

Misato really was way better than either of them, though. She was the most caring person in the whole story, which isn't saying much given her competition but still.

(Time to continue my bashing of popular mecha franchises. Only one more airing anime remains after this)

BONUS. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
https://myanimelist.net/anime/49828/Kidou_Senshi_Gundam__Suisei_no_Majo
Fall 2022 (12 episodes) plus 1 extra
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 7.96/10
Best Character: Prospera

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqZ9tCxq9Yw

Premise: Suletta Mercury is going to a prestigious academy where most things are decided through duels using mobile suit mechas. Despite her shy demeanor, Suletta proves to be a strong combatant, but many people can't help but notice that her mobile suit looks suspiciously like one of the banned Gundam formats.

The Good: The Witch from Mercury is the latest series in the Gundam mecha franchise. I've never watched any other Gundam media (the closest I've come is a minor character in Birdie Wing who likes the model kits). I was told this one was standalone and would be an okay introduction, but I'm starting to wonder if that's true because I'm finding a lot of things about the setting to be poorly explained and confusing. Still, this is the good section, so I'll say that the production values are solid. Whether it's a low-key slice-of-life scene between Suletta and her new friends or a high-octane mecha battle, the animation is great. I'm also a fan of quite a few of the ideas the series has, including the academy and the business/political intrigue.

The Bad: Unlike most people, I'm not enjoying The Witch from Mercury. I wont lie, I was mostly drawn in after hearing about Suletta winning a 'bride' in one of her first duels. No matter how many times anime has hurt me with shitty yuri romances, it appears that I never learn. Individually, I don't like the two main characters Suletta or Miorine. Suletta is shy and anxious in an exceedingly annoying way. She stammers through most sentences and hides behind things whenever someone speaks to her. She also rarely seems to comprehend the intricacies of anything she's involved with, and it's kind of lame that she's just a pawn in all the political intrigue. Miorine is more involved in that end of things, but I really dislike her personality. She's cold and distant most of the time, but there are moments where the story pretends they've been slowly growing closer even though they haven't been. Her relationship with Suletta felt like it changed for no reason between each episode, so I just couldnt get into it. It sucks that the main thing that drew me to the show is being handled so poorly, at least in my opinion, but I didn't like anything else either. All the other characters are either bland, annoying, or over-the-top evil. As for the setting, it's sad that, after one season, I'm still not entirely sure about who's on what side in the overall conflict. There has been a lot of world-building with factions in the big corporation and how Earth is an oppressed backwater compared to the space colonies. They just haven't really delved into it all in a way that's clear to me. So many episodes were wasted on meaningless duels that I'm still not sure about the bigger picture.

Overall: The Witch from Mercury isn't over yet, and theres always a chance the later parts will save it for me. I don't outright hate it, though at the moment it's a 3/10. I like the idea about a lot of things it explores. I just think the characters, setting, and plot have all been mishandled. Still, I'm in the minority on that given how much everyone else seems to be loving this show! I think the way it's handling characterization and world-building just isn't for me.

I like The Witch from Mercury, but I don't disagree with several of your points. Suletta isn't really to my taste as a protagonist and I've been wanting her to grow out of it. The school duels seem to have been a lot of time wasting. I like Miorine a lot more, and I haven't felt her relationship with Suletta inconsistent, but I'd have liked it to get more focus at times.

Some of your other complaints I think I just had differing expectations for, like the byzantine political intrigue and technobabble going on. This is my first Gundam but I wasn't going to hold those against it since they seem like part of the Gundam package. So I didn't really expect the romance or Utena setup to be as important as you or some others did.

Also I think some of the side cast are a bit better than you give them credit, like Guel and Niko. I'm interested in what happens to them.

So I like it, overall. Could be better though.

BONUS. Cromartie High School
https://myanimelist.net/anime/114/Sakigake_Cromartie_Koukou
Fall 2003 (26 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 7.90/10
Best Character: Mechazawa Shinichi
Recommend by: @cyko

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vNfhGAEOo8

Premise: Kamiyama Takashi is a typical high-schooler, but he's going to the infamous Cromartie High School. When his peers are all delinquents, as well as even stranger students like a robot and a gorilla, there's never a dull day.

The Good: Cromartie is an absurdist comedy, and I enjoyed a lot of the strange ideas it had for characters and situations. Even though almost everyone is a delinquent, I was glad that the humor never got too mean-spirited. A lot of the gags focused on how weird it is that one of the students is a robot, or a gorilla, or a buff guy who never speaks and looks exactly like Freddie Mercury. Even the more normal students still had zany quirks, like Hayashida's mohawk that could move on its own or how the toughest guy in school secretly gets motion sickness. It was fun seeing where the zaniness would take them in each episode.

The Bad: Sadly, the humor in Cromartie usually wasn't for me. I certainly respected the surreal creativity of it, but the jokes rarely made me laugh. Most of the characters are scowling tough guys, and a lot of the humor would derive from seeing them thrust into absurd situations. That just isn't something I usually find funny. My favorite parts were when the absurd elements became even more absurd, like the gorilla working as a sushi chef or anything to do with Mechazawa. It definitely wasn't a bad show, but most of it simply didn't tickle my funny bone.

Overall: I liked the creativity and some of the more absurd elements in Cromartie High School. Comedies live or die by whether or not an individual finds them funny, however, and for this I mostly didn't. Still, I was glad I watched it even if only for the skits focusing on Mechazawa and the gorilla. Thanks for recommending it, cyko! It'll probably get a 3/10 ranking alongside a few other comedies that just weren't for me, but I definitely enjoyed parts of it and it never did anything wrong.

After reading your write ups, I could eventually see that Cromartie High likely wouldn't quite be your brand of humor, but I'm glad you didn't hate it! I definitely love the absurdity of the show and find it pretty quotable, but I can see how the absurdity is not for everyone. Whenever one of my friends is worked up about something and the rest of us don't really care, someone will inevitably say, "What does that have to do with Pootan?"

The reactions of most of the friends I have shared it with are either - "What the heck did I just watch? This is hilarious." or "What the heck did I just watch? And why did you make me watch it?"

Thanks for watching my pick!

BONUS. Raven of the Inner Palace
https://myanimelist.net/anime/50590/Koukyuu_no_Karasu
Fall 2022 (13 episodes)
My Score: TBA, MAL Score: 7.51/10
Best Character: Ryuu Jusetsu

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7O_3Xfm9Mo

Premise: The Emperor has many consorts, but none are more mysterious or powerful than the Raven Consort. He begins visiting her for help with ghosts and other mystical phenomenon.

The Good: Raven of the Inner Palace is a supernatural mystery anime. Set in a world reminiscent or Imperial China, a new Emperor has recently taken the throne. Seeking to do things differently than his predecessors, he ignores a long held taboo against visiting the mysterious Raven Consort. No one knows much about her, with some rumors even claiming that she's an immortal monster. The Raven Consort has spiritual powers, however, and the palace is riddled with ghosts from a long history of political bloodshed and other tragic events. So the Emperor visits her, and what he finds isn't a monster. The Raven Consort may have fantastic powers, but in a lot of ways she's also a normal girl named Ryuu Jusetsu. While helping the Emperor with ghostly matters, the two inevitably grow closer, and other people begin entering her once solitary life as well.

It's always a good sign when I begin one of these write-ups with a lengthier description of the premise, because that means I consider the premise itself to be one of the good things! I'm a fan of supernatural stories featuring ghosts and helping them move on. The setting was also interesting. It had a history full of political unheaval, as well as more personal stories that have left haunted spirits behind. However, my favorite thing about this show was the relationships between the characters. It's the kind of show where a lot of episodes are standalone mysteries, but they also build into a larger story and influence how people behave around each other. The dynamic between Jusetsu and the Emperor is easily the highlight. They had a lot of great banter, but also a lot of sweet moments where they began to understand one another. Despite her immense power, Jusetsu is still a young woman who has been isolated most of her life. It's a running theme that she doesn't know how to act around people, including both the Emperor and a growing cast of guards and servants. While unraveling the tragedies that befell the spirits she's dealing with, Jusetsu often learns a lesson about how to deal with people and avoid such sad fates.

The Bad: There are only two negatives for Raven of the Inner Palace. One is that I hate the OP song (and I'm sad I had to link it instead of the superior ED song). The other problem is that, from what I've read, this season only covered roughly half of the source material. It didn't end on a big cliffhanger or anything, but it still wasn't as conclusive as I would've liked. Hopefully there's another season someday!

Overall: Raven of the Inner Palace really resonated with me because it deftly mixed together a lot of elements I usually enjoy. I liked the setting, as well as the various ghost stories. They were a good balance between being interesting mysteries on their own while also helping define character relationships or build into a larger story. Jusetsu was great, and I loved watching her slowly open up to the Emperor and everyone else. There's still obviously a lot more left to the story, however, so I hope this gets another season someday! Right now it's a low 8/10, but that was still enough to make it my favorite show of Fall 2022. If another season comes along and pushes the story even further, my ranking for the series would likely rise a lot as well.
