I will say I think it's (deliberately) a show that's very difficult to engage with on a literal level. It basically sinks or swims by how well its thematic content lands with you.

This is probably the big reason I disliked it, then. I can definitely enjoy stories with a big focus on themes and symbolism (like Revue Starlight) but I personally need them to have a literal foundation that can be enjoyed on its own too. Just my preference, I guess.

If I had to pick one of those two, it's easily Rei. I usually don't mind tsunderes, but it comes down to their percentages of tsun and dere. Asuka was too tsun for me. Rei was at least cool and mysterious.

Misato really was way better than either of them, though. She was the most caring person in the whole story, which isn't saying much given her competition but still.
