Premise: Kamiyama Takashi is a typical high-schooler, but he's going to the infamous Cromartie High School. When his peers are all delinquents, as well as even stranger students like a robot and a gorilla, there's never a dull day.

The Good: Cromartie is an absurdist comedy, and I enjoyed a lot of the strange ideas it had for characters and situations. Even though almost everyone is a delinquent, I was glad that the humor never got too mean-spirited. A lot of the gags focused on how weird it is that one of the students is a robot, or a gorilla, or a buff guy who never speaks and looks exactly like Freddie Mercury. Even the more normal students still had zany quirks, like Hayashida's mohawk that could move on its own or how the toughest guy in school secretly gets motion sickness. It was fun seeing where the zaniness would take them in each episode.

The Bad: Sadly, the humor in Cromartie usually wasn't for me. I certainly respected the surreal creativity of it, but the jokes rarely made me laugh. Most of the characters are scowling tough guys, and a lot of the humor would derive from seeing them thrust into absurd situations. That just isn't something I usually find funny. My favorite parts were when the absurd elements became even more absurd, like the gorilla working as a sushi chef or anything to do with Mechazawa. It definitely wasn't a bad show, but most of it simply didn't tickle my funny bone.

Overall: I liked the creativity and some of the more absurd elements in Cromartie High School. Comedies live or die by whether or not an individual finds them funny, however, and for this I mostly didn't. Still, I was glad I watched it even if only for the skits focusing on Mechazawa and the gorilla. Thanks for recommending it, cyko! It'll probably get a 3/10 ranking alongside a few other comedies that just weren't for me, but I definitely enjoyed parts of it and it never did anything wrong.
