I think he may be. It's looking like the amount of money he's potentially going to lose from this venture may end up staggering, even for him, and even though he'd still be richer than God the credibility hit will hurt him in the future.

This is amazing, I don't care what you guys say.

I actually think paid verification isn't a bad idea, but the price is way too high.

I think if he made it $10 a year most people would have begrudgingly accepted it and it would have been an instsnt few million dollars a year

what part of it is a good idea

why does a non-public figure want to be verified? No one is looking at my Twitter and worried it might not be the real me. I just dont see what I get out of it.

Its free money. Why should verification be free?

You nailed it that its a completely unnecessary service for most people, so the people who want it are going to pay for it.

You just have to charge a small enough amount where its not worth the hassle of being unverified. 8$ a month is too high Imo

I read a book recently that argued for this exact thing to protect society, that the freeness of social media is part of the problem and if it was paid instead then social media would be designed to make your life better and give you what you actually wanted instead of making your life worse by rage baiting you to prop up your usage.

Facebook for instance makes you spend less time with real friends not more, if it cost money that would change

Because impersonation is a problem for the platform, and verification is the solution. If the fee was to deal with operating costs it would be one-time, not monthly. The reason he thinks he can get away with charging for it is that it's unintentionally become a status symbol (signifying that someone's an "important" tweeter), but if anyone can pay for it it'll lose that prestige and just signify that someone's a sucker instead.

Verification should be free because it benefits the other users of the site more than the actual verified person.

if some guy pretending to be Lebron James is scamming people, thats a problem for the people getting scammed, not for Lebron.

The amount of money Twitter realistically can make from this scheme is pretty small relative to their annual ad revenue, but it could do actual damage to the user experience. It seems short-sighted to me.

I think part of Elon's goal here is to drive leftist users off of Twitter. $8 a month from the small fraction of users with a blue checkmark is not going to suddenly make Twitter turn a profit. It's not going to make him back his $44 billion anytime soon. No, this is about pushing out people Elon thinks are illiberal.

Isn't the point to monetize the platform, that many who have blue checks marks make money on the platform in the forms of marketing and such, and that it stops the process of trying to get authorized if not a legitimate account due to the monetary cost behind it now.

they already dont verify illegitimate accounts, the money doesnt help with that. Im pretty sure the verification process involves actually verifying the person is who they say they are. Theyre not giving check marks to imposters.

also, as for check mark people making money off the site, I think thats a two way street. Celebrities may use the site to market their stuff, but theyre also getting people to visit Twitter and see ads.

The users of Twitter create all of its content. Twitter needs its users more than its users need Twitter. It seems like a bad idea to ruffle the celebrity users feathers like this.

Blue checks who don't care about their check often change their name and profile picture to someone and say some crazy shit, it gets retweeted like a million times, and then twitter punishes them by taking it away.

Now imagine you could just pay $8 and get a new one, lol.
