Stupid question...why are the squared differences smaller numbers and decimals, when the regular decimals aren't? Are you square rooting instead?

Ah sorry, I explained this when I first posted them, but dropped the explainer from later posts.

I take each of the individual differences, square them, then add them together, then square root the total.

Zero is the other song whose placement I shuffled around a lot (almost had this in 4th place!). Liberation of Gracemeria is still the best Ace Combat song, but unlike the zts Umineko champion, this one doesn't sound at all like the song that should've won instead, so it gets a point there! Really cool Spanish guitar here.

Not necessarily. Quite arbitrary on my part. Just puts the numbers back into a number range / distribution that is vaguely along the lines of the non-squared ones.

14/16: Waveshine, ZaziGuado
15/16: Max Galactica
16/16: Chaeix, Collen, Mac Arrowny

Waveshine (14/16): The singing is meh to me, but I love the use of strings in this song. Just like the 15th place, this has strong instrumentation with somewhat annoying singing. The singing is more tolerable in this one however. Also, to reference the lyrics (Never say never), this song is better than the Justin Bieber song of the same name at least, but neither are particularly that good. I suppose I do like this song slightly more than dislike it, but its still somewhat mediocre. Rating: 5.1/10 (positive neutral; borderline like)

tazzy (13/16): This is just an Ar song with good production and actual singing. No wonder it won. Trolling aside its alright though certainly nothing special. Dont get how it won but thats been somewhat common with the last few contests I think.

Pablo Smith (11/16): Its Endeavour. It sounds alright but its some of the blandest "alright" out there. Honestly feels a bit insulting ranking this higher than Scars of Time, but I like this just a tad bit more for feeling more complete. Really getting put to sleep by this track, especially this late into the playlist.

pyresword (9/16): Yep this is a vocal power ballade. It's not my favorite example, but it is solid and the genre is one I tend to like a lot.

andy (8/16): WILL WE EVEEEEEER

FIND FOREEEEVEEEER
A fun and wacky song, with a ridiculously catchy chorus. I'm impressed how unique this feels, and I admire its 'loudly shove everything into your face at once and hope for the best' approach. It can be a little abrasive but overall it pays off!

I dont know what it is about Endeavour. The lyrics are impossibly goofy, for one thing. But everything else is so unbelievably...well, amazing? The overall presentation is terrific. Its such an easy song to slide into and enjoy. It just feels good to listen to in a way few other vgm can reach for me. What a great song.

hb (6/16): Endeavour, like a certain other champion, is one of the songs that really grows on everyone that hears it. It manages to worm its way into the hearts of many, growing more enjoyable every time you hear it. Will this trend ever stop? Not unless forever has been found.

vaati000 (3/16): gorgeous jpop

azuarc (2/16): Do I ever regret casting the last vote for this over Isoleucine? Eh, not really. I occasionally think about what might have been and if Isoleucine would have been a better winner...but then I relisten to Endeavour. It's always better than I remember, which makes it such a treat to listen to each time. Everything from the instruments to the vocals to the drums is so vivid and triumphant that it's funny to think this was a track that just limped its way through most of its matches and created the impression of being divisive. Surely nobody actually dislikes Endeavour, right? (But why are we swearing in the name of the rover? Like a dog? Or a Mars rover?)

dowolf (2/16): I've listened to this a million times and every listen still manages to blow me away.

I love the syncopated staccato. I love the energy. I love the patient buildup at the beginning, then how the song just puts layer after layer on. I love the call-and-response, with the response shifting through various instruments, and how it's not exact repetition. I love how bold every voice, instrumental or vocal, is allowed to be, yet if you took any of them out of this piece, it would leave a hole. I love the not-falsetto-because-you-don't-call-it-that-when-it's-a-woman- but-you-know-what-I-mean in the outro. I love IN THE NAME OF THE ROOMBA.

I try to keep myself from becoming so jaded that I forget that somehow I stumbled into a community of people who like stuff like this too. I fail a lot, but I still try.

Janus (2/16): If I had to describe this in one word, it would be "majestic". The trumpets, the strings, the drums, and of course the vocals just all come together so well. Song makes me feel invincible.

Haste (1/16):
New Ranking: 9.7 (1st place)
Rank the Retirees: 9.6 (12th place)

Im still angry that it beat Partizans, Fatal Blooms in Moonlight, and Isoleucine >.<, Still, its my favorite champion! The way the music progresses and utilizes harmonies for energy is really something else.

It starts off relaxed and ambiguous its hard to say what's going to happen. The piano is very foreboding, though simple, but abnormal. Then the violin comes in with maximum force, and the music lets everything loose for quite some time! I love those ascending piano chords. Then the energy gets upped AGAIN with trumpet entrance at at 1:02 WOW, what energy! (and those drums!) I normally dislike ridiculously high trumpet lines that are sampled, but it accomplishes exactly what it needs to do!!!!!

Then finally at 1:59 comes the peak of it all, Shaylee + Florence joining forces belting out WILL WE EVER FIND FOREVER!!!! Yeah, if this part does not impact you, well, Im not sure what would. I just like how the line moves from the 5th to the 9th so very intense. Harmonies here are excellent, too, and love how they often change while the vocalists sustain. For example, the minor 9th vs. the bass at at 2:07, and 2:09 - 2:11 you got tritone then a major 7th (still referring to melody vs. bass). Trumpet and drumming really fills things out. At 3:58 I love how the drums drop out and its FAT BRASSY goodness. At 4:24 we get an unexpected bebop harmonized trio cool contrast =O. Then it's back to the amazing piano feels from the beginning. WHOA @ placement of those reverse piano effects.it's like the time/space itself just got warped and its very haunting :) :). hey seem to work well almost anywhere, haha! Then we got the refrain once more, yay! Then it gets happy for a bit! Then it ends again with the solo duet, mirroring the beginning with that calm, ambiguous feeling.

But yeah, what I love about this piece is that it covers a wide spectrum of feelings, which gets all put together in such a beautiful way! Also, the lyrics are fun. It's great to have not one, but two Phantasy Star tracks retired now from VGMC 14! :) This music has grown on me over time, even after the contest ended, so I'm not AS annoyed about its path of destruction as before.

lem (1/16): I didn't really expect any particular results from my rankings, but it's interesting that with the Gust, Falcom, and Umineko songs in the pool, Endeavour is the song that took my number 1 spot. But I guess looking at the common thread that has showed up in my writeups for some of my top songs, it isn't a big surprise. As I listen to more Phantasy Star songs, it's clear to me that the composers do an incredible job with the level of melodic and harmonic depth that go into them, and Endeavour is a really great example of this. Florence McNair's vocals (and to a somewhat lesser extent, Shaylee's) are really good, and the layered instruments of violins, brass instruments, and others create a sort of soundscape that's filled with all sorts of different sounds, and that's something that I've come to realize is a trait that I tend to really love.

Pablo Smith (12/16):
6.5/10
Cool flute + guitar intro that then transitions into getting smacked in the face with violins. I like the energy in the second half but the song is a bit too short for me to really get into it. Maybe that's for the best. Either way, solid track but I'll probably forget about it by the time I wake up in the morning.

Janus (10/16): I like the flute : )

Haste (8/16):
New Ranking: 8.6 (8th place)
Rank the Retirees: 8.9/10 (51st place)

Ah, the king of kings, the lord of lords, as far as recognition and respect among vgm. Ive known this theme since I purchased Chrono Cross clear back in 1999. (I never got very far in the game shame on me) There are one or two CC tracks Id take over this one, but its solid! Nobody can deny that. The delicate atmosphere in the first half is wonderful it takes you to a new world. (fretless bass is one of my favorite basses) I like the soft sus2 chords the way they add to the harmonies at the start such a Mitsuda thing. The low guitar lines (5ths and 2nds) are again, so very Mitsuda! The flute melody is so pretty because I love the way it uses Dorian, and when it gets to that contrasting bII chord at 0:34 it fills me with joy! And the transition into the upbeat dance is, well, flawless. Celtic violin fiddling is really fun. Gotta love those triplet ornaments in the melody here, too. Overall I love this music! But it doesnt do anything super amazing, and so it fails to reach the Amazing tier

lem (8/16): The fact that my first 9/10 song in the rankings is right in the middle at number 8 shows how much I love a lot of these champions! I'm not sure how many, if any, Yasunori Mitsuda songs I like more than Scars of Time. It's just a really great song all around, especially from 0:58 onwards after the intro. The instrumentation from the violins and the guitar just comes together really well.

andy (5/16): Ah, the classic of classics. Honestly the first 45 secs aren't all that exciting on their own, but it's all a set-up for what comes next. Then it nails a perfect mix of sadstrings and high energy beats to create something special. When I was younger I often watched a concert medley on youtube that combined Scars with Frog's Theme and Far Away Times and now I can't hear this one alone without thinking it sounds unfinished lol. Turns out it's still up, here it is if anyone wants to give it a listen!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NITRZK8z0ek&t=232s

azuarc (5/16): There's a reason this is the king, why it won VGMC1, why nothing has been able to compete with it since. (TOC1 finals notwithstanding.) You might like other songs ahead of Scars. You might not consider it the consummate VGM track of all time. But you can't tell me it's bad. You can't tell me you dislike it, that it fails on any level, or that it comes up short in a way that's going to render it low on your list. Nobody can. It's going to win this ranking overall, and everyone knows it. This write-up is ceremonial at best.

dowolf (5/16): I still know the poem that goes with the first half of the song by heart. 'Nuff said.

hb (5/16): Yeah, this one won the first VGMC for a damn good reason, and I suspect its popularity hasnt waned in the slightest. Theres really not much to say here, sometimes the obvious picks are that for a really damn good reason.

Theres something about this song that keeps us coming back, year in and year out. I have no doubt that if there wasnt a rule about retired songs, Scars of Time would have multiple championships to its name. Its as close to a perfect song as Ive heard VGM produce. Its so easy to get lost in its embrace. This is a song that is pardon the pun timeless.

Waveshine (2/16): Ah yes, the classic that started it all. Even before joining the vgm community, this was already one of my favorite video game pieces of all time, so there might be a bit of nostalgia bias here admittedly. As a flute player, I absolutely adore the flute solo at the beginning in particular. This piece has an incredibly great melody and instrumentation. While I think this is a well-deserving winner, Id like to give a special shout-out to its final two opponents: Baba Yetu and Dreams of the Shore Bordering Another World (the latter of which funnily enough is also from Chrono Cross). All three were amazing pieces that equally deserved championship. Too bad there can only be one winner, but those two were very worthy opponents for this great piece and very much deserved to be top three. Rating: 9.6 (love it)

pyresword (1/16): This one is an absolute classic. Beautiful woodwinds at the beginning, and the transition to the 2nd section still gives me chills.

tazzy (1/16): The first time I can recall falling in love with a video game song was right here. I dunno how I initially found it exactly since Id heard it prior to VGMC1. I remember it was some fan-made music video with what Im pretty sure now was a yaoi visual novel from the early-to-mid-2000s. VGMC1 was 16 years ago right? I wouldve been 12 or 13. I have kinda fallen off in participation, sometimes missing even the nominations, and Im doubtful Ill bother voting in the next contest. I feel like I have more fun listening to all the songs than paying attention to what happens. I still fee as if I have the mindset of being personally attacked when people dont like songs I love or vice versa. A very immature mindset of a teenager who is still listening to Chrono Cross music and crying because its just so beautiful. Perhaps the most mature thing I could do is recognize how immature I actually am. Maybe this will be the last thing you see me write with a modicum of depth in relation to VGMC or maybe Ill change my mind and still participate extensively next year. Hell, maybe Scars of Time isnt the winner of this list and a much shittier writeup is the last thing I write. I dunno, this is still pretty shitty. This isnt meant to be my therapy session where I pretend to be insightful, this is meant to be a discussion of Yasunori Mitsudas masterpiece, Scars of Time. The song is like a scar, constantly apparent in my brain to the point I can remember the tiniest of details. But its a good scar, like one that lets you tell neat stories like this one. And I got the scar by being introduced to yaoi visual novels in elementary school. Wow, this has been quite the directionless discussion, so Ill end soon. Scars of Time is still among the greatest pieces of music ever composed, and none of these other fifteen songs deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as it. Thats not an insult, just the unfortunate reality of how much Scars of Time matters. Maybe not to you, but to me for sure. Thanks, Mitsuda.

YES SCARS OF TIME AHHH
As much as I was disappointed to see my ranking waaaaay off the average ranking, I'm at least glad we got a deserving winner (imo). After Okami got out, I have been rooting hard for Scars of Time ever since. Glad to see it at first. In one of the server's I'm a part of, Scars of Time won a seperate contest, and I joked around saying, "When will Scars of Time lose?!" The response I got from my fellow server members? "Never."
Needless to say, that aged pretty well.

This was fun. Thanks for hosting. I'd be curious to see how Scars would do in a modern day contest. Still seems fairly dominant

None of these people must have submitted early. Scars was completely dominant. The difference between 1st and 2nd (68) was roughly double the combined difference between 4th and 7th (21), and 10th and 13th (15).

I mean, it's good, but it's not my favorite, which is what this was about, right? The one you liked best?

I don't know how to do this but I would if I had the time and knew how to do it. Maybe over winter break? Not sure. I'm definitely gonna need some help to recreate this for the runner-ups though.

in the end, I was in seven Bottom 5s for sum differences and one Top 10 (Margaret).

My highest pairing was a T-309th with Haste, JONA, and Margaret

Someone on the discord suggested that we could use the rankings to calculate what the 1v1 scores would be for every pair of songs if they hypothetically took each other on in VGMC. So here they are:

The amusing thing is that yours truly and Margaret are in the 8th worst pairing...! You are truly the bridge between us two!

Very pleasantly surprised Endeavour did as well as it did - figured it would get a lot more really low rankings. Unsurprised that Scars ran away with it.

Fun project!

2. Idola Phantasy Star Saga | Endeavour
We never did find forever because the game got shut down!! This is the other, other song that I shuffled around quite a bit in my rankings. Each time I listen to this, I feel like I flop between liking and disliking this. Definitely inclining more towards the "like" side of this nowadays. This one took a few listens to grow on me, but by the end of its contest I liked it quite a bit. My initial disappointment would eventually be replaced with retrospective appreciation. Nice, powerful vocals here.

1. Chrono Cross | Chrono Cross -Scars of Time-
This is the most inoffensive okay thing I have ever heard. The instrumentals and production values on this song are nice, 7/10 overall.

My top four for what I completed included Scars, Endeavor, Papillones, and Reset, so I wouldn't be too far off the mark if I were included. I point to Scars and Okami specifically for why I tries to learn the flute (and failed.)
