#216:

Waveshine (2/16): Ah yes, the classic that started it all. Even before joining the vgm community, this was already one of my favorite video game pieces of all time, so there might be a bit of nostalgia bias here admittedly. As a flute player, I absolutely adore the flute solo at the beginning in particular. This piece has an incredibly great melody and instrumentation. While I think this is a well-deserving winner, Id like to give a special shout-out to its final two opponents: Baba Yetu and Dreams of the Shore Bordering Another World (the latter of which funnily enough is also from Chrono Cross). All three were amazing pieces that equally deserved championship. Too bad there can only be one winner, but those two were very worthy opponents for this great piece and very much deserved to be top three. Rating: 9.6 (love it)

pyresword (1/16): This one is an absolute classic. Beautiful woodwinds at the beginning, and the transition to the 2nd section still gives me chills.

tazzy (1/16): The first time I can recall falling in love with a video game song was right here. I dunno how I initially found it exactly since Id heard it prior to VGMC1. I remember it was some fan-made music video with what Im pretty sure now was a yaoi visual novel from the early-to-mid-2000s. VGMC1 was 16 years ago right? I wouldve been 12 or 13. I have kinda fallen off in participation, sometimes missing even the nominations, and Im doubtful Ill bother voting in the next contest. I feel like I have more fun listening to all the songs than paying attention to what happens. I still fee as if I have the mindset of being personally attacked when people dont like songs I love or vice versa. A very immature mindset of a teenager who is still listening to Chrono Cross music and crying because its just so beautiful. Perhaps the most mature thing I could do is recognize how immature I actually am. Maybe this will be the last thing you see me write with a modicum of depth in relation to VGMC or maybe Ill change my mind and still participate extensively next year. Hell, maybe Scars of Time isnt the winner of this list and a much shittier writeup is the last thing I write. I dunno, this is still pretty shitty. This isnt meant to be my therapy session where I pretend to be insightful, this is meant to be a discussion of Yasunori Mitsudas masterpiece, Scars of Time. The song is like a scar, constantly apparent in my brain to the point I can remember the tiniest of details. But its a good scar, like one that lets you tell neat stories like this one. And I got the scar by being introduced to yaoi visual novels in elementary school. Wow, this has been quite the directionless discussion, so Ill end soon. Scars of Time is still among the greatest pieces of music ever composed, and none of these other fifteen songs deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as it. Thats not an insult, just the unfortunate reality of how much Scars of Time matters. Maybe not to you, but to me for sure. Thanks, Mitsuda.
