Seize the Truth is a song that wavers between a 7 and an 8 for me. Not really one I feel strongly about, but it's so remarkably "decent" that I am kind of surprised at how poorly it is doing.

I'm not entirely sure how Falcom music consistently comes across as either average or amazing to me with no middle ground.

Seize the Truth is something I would have been (and was!) really crazy about during the year VGMC9 was held. That power metal guitar + violin combo is something I've always been vocal about really loving, and really was what put Falcom on my radar in the first place. I was actually a pretty big fan of the Yukihiro Jindo Falcom stuff even before my first VGMC. Nowadays though, it's still good, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the level of other Trails battle themes, and especially not any of the other battle themes from this game specifically (hi Azure Arbitrator, Unfathomed Force, Conflicting Passions, Unexpected Emergency, and so on and so forth). Still like a solid 7.5 or 8.

15/16: deo, Janus, pyresword
16/16: Disillusion, DoctorJimmy, FL81, golden009, Korji, loweffortmemes, p0

loweffortmemes (16/16): MG2's main theme has a lot of this militant sound to it, like a steady march, that I dont find all that interesting. The song gets a bit better when it gets faster paced, but ultimately, its style is something that I have a tendency to be pretty lukewarm about.

Janus (15/16): Solid action tune that blends in some more somber parts. Not much to say but I still like it despite the low ranking.

pyresword (15/16): Mostly unimpressed by this, though it's a reasonably solid tense track and I like the epic finale.

Andylt (14/16): What a strange song. I like the little buildup from 1:25-1:42, but for most of its runtime this track feels like it's padding time trying to think of something to do before the obligatory last minute climax. Really all over the place. But what a climax it is!

hb (14/16): This song IS a classic, but other than the main melodic part, it simply doesnt grab me
very much. The more percussion-based portions simply arent strong enough for me to be a big
fan of the song. I dont dislike it, but I wouldnt say I like it either.

azuarc (13/16): The VGMC1 champion, Scars of Time, was a pastiche of different styles and moments from the game, and all them fit together beautifully. The VGMC2 champion, MGS2 Main Theme, was another medley...and they did not all fit together beautifully. The first roughly 2 minutes of the song are very well done...and then it goes to sleep on us for 20 seconds. It brings back the hype main motif, and then kinda goes to sleep again. Even though it builds itself up dramatically, it just isn't on Scars's level where quasi-medleys are concerned.

tazzy (12/16): VGMC2 was weird as fuck. Werent there like, 20 Lunar songs or some shit? Anyway, this is an okay piece but its also kind of boring. I dont have the same nostalgia for the MGS games as others, and the music basically never stuck to my brain, soooo sorry I guess. Not really sorry about not liking it, but sorry that I cant value this as much as the rest of MGS2, which is simultaneously the greatest story ever told and also really fucking bad.

Haste (10/16): New Ranking: 8.5 (10th place)
Rank the Retirees: 8.1 (114th place)

Ive never played the MGS games, but it is on my high-priority list to play the first game! I own it, after all. I just need to finish Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve and one or two other games, and then I will hopefully get to MGS after that! >_> The opening computer sounds definitely make you seem like youre entering a hi-tech world, and then, of course, after that it sounds like youre going into some epic film espionage action! And then the ending gives you a mixture of feelings a feeling of hope, tragedy, patriotism, grandeur, etc.!. The main theme (within the Main Theme) is truly one-of-a-kind! The surprise modulation at 3:19, etc. is too cool! On a side note, one thing I find neat is the orchestra coming together on those triplets at e.g. 1:43 powerful stuff! Overall, its fantastic music and its grown on me a LOT, but I do prefer the MGS3 theme

rwlh (6/16): 9/10
#375
tags: bombastic, orchestral

Beepity boopity. A true classic, this rendition of the series main theme is full of orchestral bombast and laced with electronic effects. When the big destiny moment comes in in the last third, thats the moment when this song transcends into something terrific.

vaati000 (5/16): Immaculately early 00's

Waveshine (5/16): Wow, just wow. I was not expecting to like this piece as much as I do. I am already familiar with the Metal Gear Solid Main Theme, but I had never heard this version of it until now. I gotta say, this does not disappoint. This is an extremely epic piece, and I find it hard to think of any negative criticism to give it. While I would have preferred one of the other retirees from that same year, specifically Buoy Base Galaxy from my beloved Super Mario Galaxy, to have taken the gold here, I cant say Im particularly disappointed with this winner because at least in a vacuum without considering its opponents, this is a well-deserving winner to me personally. Rating: 9.4 (love it)

dowolf (4/16): So much about this is incredible. The opening buildup. The electronic(? maybe not the right word but) rhythm, which I have no idea was chosen to suit the themes of the game but I assume it was. When it dives headfirst into the main melody. When it returns to the melody in the very end in a stateful, mournful, resilient march. A song for when things get tough but you still hold your head high. Plus, there's a horn solo. Fastest way to my heart :)

However, there's about a 30 second gap before that final section that doesn't really make sense to me. I think it's supposed to align with an in-game cutscene, but listening to it, it feels like a hole.

But god, that last minute. That beautiful minute. It's sheer perfection.

Pablo Smith (4/16): This is one of those tracks that are pretty solid but you always end up forgetting exist. Heh, solid. I can appreciate the various flavors of action and stealth this track gives off. The quiet lulls in the beginning, followed by some serious action music, then a more stealthy part followed by another climactic action sequence until the heroic finale at the end. Main Themes usually have to encompass the vibe of the game as a whole, and this one does it by the books. Overall very good, although still isn't my first pick for favorite Metal Gear Solid 2 tracks. I wonder how you'd go about making a "Main Theme" for sleep.

Oh hi, my lowest ranked champion!! I've never actually played a Metal Gear Solid game before, so my whole exposure to its music before VGMC was through SSBB. I was not around on this board for the first three contests, and it's interesting to see what tastes were like during the very early days (my all-time favorite VGM retired the year before I started!). Anyway, I don't really have much to say about this song. It works as an intro theme, builds up, and then ends right before the point I think it's going somewhere.

15/16
16/16: azuarc, lefty, NBIceman, Plasman, Team Rocket Elite

azuarc (16/16): There's nothing wrong with Passing Through the Forest as a champion. I knew it would retire some day, and I was hoping Aquatic Ambiance would as well, but to have them square off in the finals was the biggest snooze in the time I've been around, and I say that in the year directly after resurrectedreplayer vs Id ~ Purpose!

pyresword (14/16): An adventurous song with some interesting melodies. Pretty good, but feels a bit out of place when viewed with this particular collection of songs.

tazzy (14/16): The intro is really cool but it kinda just turns into some generic JRPG map music after that. I dont have anything to add here. Probably participated in this VGMC more than I have in the past five years combined, and Ims till getting burned like the good old days. How nostalgic.

Andylt (11/16): Poor Forest. My feelings are probably less positive than they would be if I hadn't listened to it dozens of times over the past few months. The track is fine, I quite enjoy it even! But I'm struggling to find anything particularly notable about it, it's a decent pleasant track that largely goes in one ear and out the other. Consider this my slightly-above-neutral baseline, every track I rank above this is one I'd flat out call good.

Janus (11/16): I've cooled on this a bit since 16 now that it isn't my only hope for a good winner, but it's still a fun track. Probably a byproduct of years of band/rhythm games, but I've always liked it when songs have a lot of "moving lines" of 16ths - just comes off as fun.

loweffortmemes (11/16): Forest of Journeys Begun has a great spirit of adventure and exploration to it. I'm pretty satisfied with it as this year's champion.

Pablo Smith (8/16):
7.5/10
The very chirpy, plucky strings sound very nice, and the rest of the melody is cool too. Very foresty. The song doesn't really do anything to keep me hooked but I can't deny that overall its solid stuff. It doesn't do anything wrong, but it doesn't excel either. Just a passing thought, but a forest would probably suck to take a nap in.

dowolf (7/16): I remember playing this game at a distant cousin's house back in like 2000 and falling in love with this tune. I then went like 15 years without hearing it again before this community reminded me of it. What a wonderful burst of nostalgia it was to hear this old tune.

Haste (6/10):
New Ranking: 8.7 (6th place)
Rank the Retirees: N/A

I never knew much about Junya Nakano, but now that Ive made the connection between Threads of Fate and FFX, I should be able to remember the composers name now. >_> This is quite light for a forest theme. I guess it focuses more on fun adventure than quiet shadows cast by the trees. My favorite thing about this is the jumpy melodic patterns at the start! The second melody has some nice rhythms, too, though (5+5+2? Its debatable) followed by some hemiola after that, which makes a very cool complement. And the clarinet melody put on top of that gives it a VERY nice buildup, and the repetitive pattern it does is just perfect. Yeah, this music is very technical in ways that I like and doesnt really focus on catchy melodies, which is why Im kind of surprised this ended up winning the contest but speaking of that, my desire to see this track do well in a contest is actually stronger than how much I like the music! I'm very, very happy to see it win it all! (still would have preferred Breath of Forest, though.)

vaati000 (6/16): This sampling kicks ass.

Waveshine (6/16): Honestly, it was not until it retired that I had any expectation that this would win.
I have a bit of a weird history with this one as this single piece of music probably holds two records: the record for being the biggest drop AND the record for biggest jump in my liking a piece within only one listen after another. I liked it a pretty decent amount on the first listen, but I was very lukewarm to it on a second listen to the point where I nearly disliked it. I then came close to loving it on the third listen for some reason, and thats about where my stance is on this piece at the moment. I am not sure why I had such a dramatic drop followed by sudden rise in my liking of this piece, but my guess as to why I almost disliked it on a second listen was because that second listen was during its matchup with Secret of the Forest from Chrono Trigger, which I like significantly better than this piece (I also supported Secret of the Forest). On top of that, it ended up beating that song (which is one of my favorite video game songs of all time from one of my favorite games of all time), which may have made me further my negative attitude toward this piece.
Why I ended up really liking it within the next listen following its Secret of the Forest matchup is still a mystery to even me, because its next matchup was against my own nomination (Aquatic Ambiance), which it evidently ended up beating. One would think that I would begin to like it less even more so after this incident, but no. While I still prefer the runner-up and am admittedly disappointed that one didn't win, I still ended up really liking this piece in the end.
Now, finally on to talking about what I like in the piece itself. I like the snare drum and clarinet solo (?), both of which vaguely remind me of marching band music (I was in band throughout middle and high school so theres some positive bias there). Every time I hear this piece, I always imagine a mini marching band marching through the forest playing this piece. Its pretty great overall and my third favorite discovery from VGMC 16 (shout-out to The Wind Calls to Shevat in the Blue Sky and Sky Tower for being my top two favorite discoveries). Rating: 8.8 (like it a lot)

rwlh (5/16):

Few songs make me happier and calmer than Passing Through the Forest. Im so elated that this won a VGMC because I love it and Im happy other people love it too. This is a song that evokes feelings of mystery and exploration, of grand adventure and hidden promise. I love it to bits.

hb (4/16): Sometimes it's just nice to relax. VGMC16s finale ended with two far calmer songs than VGMCs usual fare, but that doesnt mean they arent strong songs. Passing Through the Forests attitude always makes me smile, putting it high up on my list.

VGMC16 itself was sixteenth place in terms of how well things played out on my end (*cough*nominations), but Passing was an alright pick to win the contest. Actually having both finalists be pretty chill/less intense tracks was a nice change of pace from the usual. Cool PMD vibes from this song, ranked it low, but that's more of a testament to the quality of other champions. Feels kinda weird talking about a song that we just had in VGMC, and I am surprised to see this drop early even if my placement of it helped place it here >_>

Beware the Forest Mushrooms would have managed to get 17th place. Probably a perfectly serviceable song in-game, but I truly do not get the love for it.

If we're talking about retired forest tracks, Forest Interlude would be my pick!

The Supra discord is currently having a contest with exclusively forest themes, if that interests you.

hb (15/16): Id (Purpose) was robbed. Also I think Ive lost interest in trance songs compared to how I felt before, causing my feelings about this one to slip. It doesnt help that I still think a lot of the other zts Umineko stuff is a lot better. Still, Id (Purpose) absolutely deserved that champion victory and I will basically forever be mad about how that went down.

azuarc (14/16): I have no problem with an Umineko champion in 2021. I have no problem with a 7th ZTS finale song out of 8 retiring. But there's a reason why RR wasn't among the first 6. It's just not that good. Not by those standards, at least. I would have put basically all the others ahead of RR, and if GS, WED, DED, LEC, and the Executioner couldn't get the job done, what does it say that RR prevailed?

Andylt (13/16): This one has grown on me. The piano is good, the harpsichord starting at 1:10 is good, and I admire the track's ambition, but the direction it goes for the last minute and a half is not one I enjoy and as a whole I'm left a bit cold by the piece.

dowolf (13/16): A really good zts theme that's odd to be a champion when I so significantly prefer WED and DED to it. Especially DED. DED is pure magic and courage and love and I should probably stop fangirling over it in the middle of a writeup about another song I DON'T CARE.

You know, I was completely prepared to declare this the only champion I dislike. I originally had it as a 5/10, #3827. Then I relistened, and...wow, I like it considerably more now. I love Umineko music but Ive always felt like resurrectedreplayer was one of the weaker big zts tracks (and the fact that I still feel the same way is a testament to the quality of his output in the game). I still wouldnt say I adore it or anything, but I did really enjoy the overwhelming sensation of dread and despair present in the song. And as usual I love grungy-ass percussion. Very pleasantly shocked that I dont dislike this anymore! ...at least for NOW mwahaha

Haste (11/16):
New Ranking: 8.3 (11th place)
Rank the Retirees: N/A

I think Ive heard something kind of like this before in Uminekohmmmmm, yes! This is more fun when you listen in on the details, for sure, especially for me, since I naturally am slightly averse to trance edm (but not as much as I used to!) The thump thump thump thump. is far less likely to give me a headache these days. Now I can enjoy the sound design a bit more What a crazy atmosphere. You have the classic zts intro (love those wind chimes, as well as the spacey drones), you have the harpsichord as usual, and the classic polymeter at the end actually, in this particular zts track, theres some polymeter in the middle of it, too(starting at 2:14)...the light synth patterns with their delay echoes sound really nice there. Highlights include the harp at 0:55 and thereabouts where they add much needed harmonic depth, and theres the piano bits after 1:21, and that . The violin stuff is nice especially since it adds a nice touch of Dorian. The pianos reverb fits in just perfectly after that. More on the ending, the big crescendo starting at after 2:40 is very satisfying Anyway, I feel much better about this being a champion now than at the time it won its championship.

Waveshine (10/16): Oh, an Umineko retiree. How original, lol! Okay, light jabbing aside, this has a pretty catchy beat. What I absolutely ADORE is the harpsichord solo starting at 1:10 (well, at least it sounds like a harpsichord). The harpsichord fits with the gothic theming of the background photo (keep in mind I can only base it off the background picture since I dont know the story or context of the game itself). I dislike the part at 2:44 though since its just annoying noise that doesnt add anything to the piece except serve to be irritating at least to me. Aside from the occasional weird noises added to the piece, this is a very catchy piece with that harpsichord solo alone bringing the pieces overall score up at least 0.5 points haha (that all being said, I still think ID Purpose shouldve won. Oh well :/ ). Rating: 8.3 (like a lot)

Janus (8/16): UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

tazzy (8/16): I think all of zts better songs have retired at this point. This is pretty mid-zts though, which means its still better than 70% of the songs that have been in these contests. Theres something neat about Umineko still winning and drawing retirees and champions this late in its lifespan. I tried reading it and it was really boring, but the sound selection is timeless and not boring at all.

vaati000 (7/16): Great composition for a visual novel backing track and the percussion is great color.

loweffortmemes (6/16): resurrectedreplayer is one of several outstanding zts songs. It's a shame that I never seem to enjoy any of zts' trance music outside of Umineko (besides the ones in Mashiro Witch, whose music was designed to sound like Umineko's) because the blend of trance sounds and violin melodies that zts makes in songs like resurrectedreplayer are always a hit for me! It's difficult for me to say which zts Umineko songs I like the most or to make any ranking of them, but suffice to say, resurrectedreplayer is a really great song!

Pablo Smith (6/16): I'm not a fan of most of the Umineko zts stuff. I don't think its bad but I do think its overrated. This is one of the few tracks I really enjoy. Personally I think its all because of the harpsichord, and the more rave-like feeling towards the last quarter of the song. Aside from that this is pretty standard Umineko trance. Being put into a trance is supposed to be a lot like falling asleep from what I've heard. Thankfully, this trance isn't enough to knock me out.

pyresword (6/16): As with most of the zts songs I think this is great, though I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites. The harpsichord line is really cool, but the rest of the song after that doesn't quite hit as hard. I do still like it a lot; it's just hard to heap praise on it when it's sitting on the same soundtrack as dreamenddischarger and the executioner, for example.

kind of a testament to how decent all these winners are when i place this in 12th place.

i do echo the sentiment that other zts umineko songs are better. dreamenddischarger is by far one of my absolute favourite pieces of video game music.
