Got curious about this because of something I asked in another thread. My answer to this would be the original Blade Runner, and I'm not even entirely sure if that would make my personal top 10. I'm sure of what my favorite movie is and have a general idea of my top 5 BTW.

My favorite "bad" movie is Grease 2. The songs are catchy and I was so young when I first saw it I didn't mind it just rehashed the first movies plot.

favorite failed would have to be Labyrinth because of David Bowie's you know what.

I wouldnt say The Princess Bride failed though it didnt set the world on fire commercially either. $31 million US only on a $16 million budget so likely a small profit overall.

Yeah I made this topic because I realized how few movies I watch that aren't "mainstream". I've seen a total of five box-office failures over the past year, and three of them were recent tentpole films thrown to the pandemic (Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, and Black Widow), and two are considered cinema classics (It's A Wonderful Life and Fight Club - and yes I did like both films a lot).

Just watched Pan on Netflix for the first time and thought it was pretty good, but then later read that it completely flopped in the box office when it came out around 5 years ago, which surprised me.

I actually thought it did worse than that. I know it was one of those where the popularity exploded after it was out of theaters. Like Hocus Pocus.

Also, not sure I'd say blade runner "failed" financially. It made money. As did the sequel.

I assumed you meant a film that cost more than it made.

Fight club made like 40M over it's budget. I wouldn't consider that a failure.

Good pick.

I had to look it up beforehand just in case my memory was wrong and it made enough money (but not enough for the well-deserved sequel).

Alas, 41 million worldwide (only 13.4 mill domestic) on a budget of 50 mill :(

$37 million domestically on a $63 million budget, ouch. Movies typically have to make double their budget back at the worldwide box office to get in the green.

Rule of thumb for profitability is about 2-2.5x the budget due to the amount the cinemas take plus marketing costs. If a movie is quite North America heavy its usually about 2x, if its more international heavy its usually about 2.5x and if its very China heavy it can be more like 3x.

So while the Blade Runners made a lot more than their budget, definitely better than some here, they still lost money for that reason. Fight Club is similar though that was not too far off.

Annihilation didnt fail, they sold the international rights to Netflix for the cost of production so it basically made pure profit from the US release.
