$37 million domestically on a $63 million budget, ouch. Movies typically have to make double their budget back at the worldwide box office to get in the green.
In its original theatrical run, the film grossed US$37 million in the United States and Canada, and US$63.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of US$100.9 million

On yes, a 63M budget. Fight club wasn't a huge hit but it didn't lose money

Rule of thumb for profitability is about 2-2.5x the budget due to the amount the cinemas take plus marketing costs. If a movie is quite North America heavy its usually about 2x, if its more international heavy its usually about 2.5x and if its very China heavy it can be more like 3x.

So while the Blade Runners made a lot more than their budget, definitely better than some here, they still lost money for that reason. Fight Club is similar though that was not too far off.
Didn't know this thanks

Interesting from wiki re fight club: "With a weak box office performance in the United States and Canada, a better performance in other territories, and the highly successful DVD release, Fight Club generated a US$10 million profit for the studio"

One of those cases where home media sales got it out of the red, the very definition of a cult classic.

$162 million on a $46 million budget, nowhere near a flop.

Many to choose from, including a few already mentioned. Let's give some love to The Nice Guys.

One of the movies in this topic is, without a doubt, among the worst movies I have ever been forced to sit through.

But which one is it~

I'll be that guy that votes Waterworld if it doesn't I think. I kinda like it.

If Fight Club isn't a box-office failure then Waterworld isn't either for the same reasons methinks.

Office Space. According to the numbers on wikipedia it took awhile for it to be profitable even after home release. It was mostly because Comedy Central got the rights for dirt cheap and played it very frequently that it found its audience.

Since Costner was sort of mentioned (Waterworld), I really do like The Postman. It's nice to see a post-apocalypse where the hero sticks around and builds something, even if he did start out with completely selfish motivations.

LoL, back when cable tv was capable of doing such a thing.

I think the same could be said about Clue. That movie was on tv all the time, I don't remember which channel.

As a Firefly fan I actually found Serenity a little bit disappointing. It was nice to see the world again, but I didn't care for the retcons or the way they killed off two characters, especially Book.

Probably did the VHS version where it plays all the endings one after another with a "this is what could have happened" card inbetween.

It was the one where they showed all the endings back to back, as Maniac mentioned, but then always finishing with the true ending.
