Dude dude DUDE The Black Phone was absolutely superb! I seriously can not stop thinking about it. Everything was just so subdued and delicate which made the horror SO much more impactful.

I actually enjoyed Fresh a lot but I sort of cooled on it a bit now. I think tonally it was a little milquetoast, like on constant edge of "oh, should I be quirky and fun" or "oh, should I be serious and dour" without ever really settling on one.

I just watched Mad God a few days ago. The visuals are just absolutely stunning. I want to say it's my new favorite Stop-Motion movie just on looks alone...? Like, the sheer amount of creativity and work that went into this is mind-boggling. Not a frame goes by without something interesting catching your eye and this is kept up the entire run time. Yet... the plot honestly let me down a little. I love a good allegorical symbol-fest as much as the next guy, but I don't think it's too much to ask to have at least a little bit of an explanation of what's going on. I think it would've been a perfect movie if the plot was just expanded in just a few more directions.

My rankings so far:
  1. The House
  2. Black Phone
  3. We're All Going to the World's Fair
  4. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  5. X
  6. Mad God
  7. Fresh
  8. Men
  9. Scream
  10. See For Me
  11. Shut In
  12. No Exit
  13. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  14. Firestarter
Bottom two are pretty much total garbage honestly.

X was a fantastic subversion of the usual sexual moralities in slasher films with a great villain. The Black Phone was a very fun old-fashioned chiller. Men was too muddled for its own good, but at least it provided some great visuals and performances.

Seeing Nope later this week and I'm pretty hyped.

I loved Black Phone quite a bit. It's simple and exactly as long as it needed to be, but everything is so clean and well-done. Two thumbs up.

Also, this reminds me that somehow I lost my October Horror Movie list again. RIP to me.

oh I forgot The House, that would probably fall just below Men for me

Black Phone was incredible, went so many different directions I didn't expect and did a phenomenal job tying it all together

Watched Fresh tonight and I just really wasn't thrilled by it at all. Like, I see what it was going for, but it's like trying to be American Psycho without really having the style or passion to get there. Instead it just kinda fell flat for me, feeling more like a Lifetime movie than a true passionate horror. Then there's little stuff that kinda bothered me, like it just completely dropping the bartender investigation subplot abruptly. And, I know I'm in the minority but I'll say it, I don't really care for Sebastian Stan as an actor. He works as like Winter Soldier as the moody broody tough guy character, but in something like this where the main villain just needs that stronger personality to carry it, he didn't deliver. Best thing about the movie was the brief Armie Hammer easter egg joke

Pearl looks so friggin' good.

I'd say The House has at least some element of horror in all 3 shorts, just expressed in different ways. In the first you have body + psychological horror, comedy horror in the second, and the third a post-apocalyptic comedy-drama. Together with its surreal and excellently-done stop-motion animation it's really quite the invoking package that reminds me of some of the best old-anthologies like Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow.

Yeah, it's not bad at all. There are things to critique it on (main char's voice actor, some of the story not really connecting together very well). Really great graphics though, somewhat fun mechanics and some good puzzles.

Saw Nope yesterday. I'm glad I saw the second trailer because I'd have probably been disappointed in the film had I not. It's definitely not much like Get Out or Us; honestly, I have a tough time calling it a horror film even. It's much, much more sci-fi leaning and not really in the way Alien is (I consider Alien a horror film over science fiction). I didn't dislike it, it had its moments I think. It's no Get Out unfortunately; I'm not sure if I liked it more than Us. They're just very different films. Overall I think Us has higher highs, but also lower lows. Nope doesn't really have "lows" in that same way; it just is what it is, and I have a hard time viewing it as horror.

I guess I'm a bit behind on seeing horror films this year. I've only really seen the ones dropped in theaters (not gonna count Doctor Strange as horror... though honestly it might be more so than Nope, but I'm going to lump Nope in for now).

1. The Black Phone
2. X
3. Scream
4. Nope
5. The Cursed (technically a 2021 film, but had its release in 2022 in the US)
6. Firestarter
7. Men

Honestly the biggest problem for me lied in the plot and the insufferably bad character decisions made throughout the film. For the film to work in the slightest, the characters are made to consistently make awful non-logical choices that were practically beyond anything I've seen in slasher movies to this date. Like when the characters first show up and cause the orphanage owner to lose consciousness and the chef's fianc just decides to randomly go in the ambulance with Leatherface and the cops when she was barely had anything to do with the situation to begin with. Then later on, one of the worst scenes I've ever seen in anything, no exaggeration, they're like taking off in the bus, getting away from Leatherface, and they're driving along and suddenly the bus driver stops OUT OF NOWHERE to check something and then of course he dies which allows their "epic" bus massacre to happen. And of course, they also butcher Sally's character who shouldn't even be obsessed with Leatherface as much as she is and arrives on the scene to instantly fail and be taken out by Leatherface. Like, what the hell? If you're going to break back a legacy character at least do something better. The whole film was just a complete waste of time unless you just want some bloody kills which I admit it does an okay job within that regard. I mean, I'm not surprised though since the last film, Leatherface, was also a complete dumpster fire.

I'm 95% sure it's because the bus was damaged and undriveable anymore due to leatherface attacking it.

I believe this was due to deer in the headlights and also with questionably them morally being in the wrong and being the cause of it. The girl who was so upset, when told the lady died even more so got upset with the possible guilt which led to her searching for the deed and ultimately her decision she wanted to leave.

You can not like it, but let's keep the criticisms fair. The Sally character stuff was dumb for sure.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was outrageously stupid and a clear ripoff of the Halloween reboot. Like they just completely abandon Leatherface's character to do this overdramatic bullshit story that is impossible to care about. Also apparently he's been some silent shut in all this time but now he can do chainsaw kung fu.

Like there's some good stuff in it but for the most part it's a garbage movie.

I think they could've made the bus scene a little clearer in that case. I'm fine with that in concept but either the editing or acting failed that scene big time. I think if I remember correctly the bus driver doesn't even have any dialogue when he leaves the bus, like a simple "what was that?" could've sufficed.

And I do get the morality aspect of it, for sure, but I think it would've been better if the girl who was actually upset went with them in the ambulance, then. A simple role reversal would've been perfect, then you just have the chef discover the deed or something instead.

And the whole school shooting backstory was unnecessary and not fleshed out enough to be a commentary on anything. Like it mostly feels like it's just there to be shocking which is pretty gross honestly.

To me, even if you can justify some of the character actions, I just think the film didn't have much of a plot to it and things just happened so Leatherface could have some bloody kills.

I saw a movie reviewer talking about how Nope is basically Jordan Peele's response to the backlash over having said he doesn't want to make movies centered around white characters by having black characters whose legenary family history was buried by the racist industry finally take back their own name and significance by being both the star (Kaluuya) and the filmmaker (Palmer) as a metaphor for black filmmakers needing to be able to tell black stories in order to be properly recognized for them.

Gonna be thinking about this one for a while

I also saw Fall today. I think it leans more thriller than horror (depending on your aversion to heights), but it was surprisingly really good. For those out of the know because it hasn't had much advertising, it's about two girls who climb up to the top of a defunct telephone tower and then they get trapped up there. Good stuff.

Watched Prey! Liked it quite a bit. The action scenes were really well done in particular and loved Predator's design here. I think I noticed they messed up Predator's lore a little though? Like his cloak usually malfunctions in water but here it stayed steady. I dunno.

I'm of the opinion they have yet to make a bad Predator. 2018 is mediocre but it's not bad. Otherwise I love 1 (obv), 2, Predators, and now this one is a solid entry too.
