Crocus
GEOMETRIC DANCE (Long Ver.)
Renata Glasc, the Chem-Baroness

I started listening to Crocus and was like "this is beautiful; please let Limitless Cinderella just suck so I don't have to listen to the full 6 minutes". Because I'm ADHD and get impatient quickly. No such luck; Limitless Cinderella is really good. So I listened to that all the way through and then went back to Crocus and again wondered why I doubted my initial instinct.

Up third is we've got to believe in something, which is painfully generic RPG music. GEOMETRIC DANCE (Long Version) is far from a masterpiece, but it's more than good enough here, and enjoyable enough that I listened to it all the way through even though I'd made my decision very quickly.

Help me I'm scared. Both of these pieces instantly made me want to vote against them. Luckily, liberatedliberator at least doesn't stay bad for long. Unfortunately, neither did Renata Glasc, leaving me back at an impasse.

Crocus >>>>>>>> Limitless Cinderella > GEOMETRIC DANCE >>>>> we have to believe in something >>> Renata Glasc, the Chem-Baroness > liberatedliberator

I hate when it shakes out like that, voting for #1, #3, and #5. But damn, Crocus is amazing.

There's a Jackson Pollock piece called Autumn Rhythm and now I'll forever associate it with GEOMETRIC DANCE

oh hi loveliveberatedliberator I have until round 4 for you right

When I hear Crocus, I hear the start of a magical fairytale adventure! Songs about longing and wanderlust really helped me get through the pandemic (Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Moana's How Far I'll Go); they're a great way to begin a story. But it's even more satisfying when they're used to conclude a story, which is what makes Crocus really special to me. My #1 example of this sentiment is the final strip of Calvin & Hobbes, where the words It's a magical world are what mark the start of a fresh winter and new adventures. Crocus expresses this idea in the form of a credits theme:

Right here I know
There should be more
To see in this world
It's your hand I'll hold
To go explore

When these are the parting words left by an author, it reminds you that this childlike sense of wonder is not just something to serve this piece of fiction, but something to carry with you as you live your own life. The crocus flower is one of the first to bloom in early spring, seen tenaciously emerging through thick blankets of snow, so what it's come to symbolize was all but inevitable: Youth, Innocence, Joy, and Renewal. Genre: SEISHUN BALLAD

Crocus

Renata Glasc, The Chem-Baroness

I'm kinda surprised I don't find Crocus's vocals obnoxious, but I think I like them! They mix well with the backing instruments and the soft gentle vibe the whole thing has going on.
Limitless is easy to listen to, but maybe a little too safe to stand out or be memorable.

Ah now here we go, time to believe. Honestly I don't think this is an impeccable song from start to finish, but the chanting is so good with the strings behind it and everything building up, I can't help but love it. There's something special there!
Nope, not really feeling the geometric dance I'm afraid. Not sure why, but it all blends together to me.

Oof, the Chem-baroness is funky! This feels meaty and powerful, I really like when it goes all out at 2:11. Wish the melody was a little better but I love the mixing.
liberated is the opposite, I like the melody a lot but the beat is really generic and too loud. I don't love when it goes off and does something else either, the main hook is the only part I enjoy.

Crocus: 3.5/5
Cinderella: 2.5/5

Crocus is such a good song. The instrumental is excellent, the vocals are great, really good melody too. It has a very bittersweet feeling to it. The e-guitar solo in the middle is pretty nice. Good key change for the last chorus too. Probably gonna be my favorite song of the day, unless one of the other ones is unexpectedly better than I remember them.

Limitless Cinderella has a nice vibe to it, but it's nothing outstanding. It just goes, without anything to really capture my interest. Nothing offensive about it either.

I like a lot of Kajiura's contributions to Xenosaga, but this one wasn't one of the highlights. Nice Kajiura vocals in here though. The flute is pretty good as well.

GEOMETRIC DANCE is basically LUCID NIGHTMARE but with an actually good length. Good fusion stuffs. The guitar solo towards the beginning is very good. Also love the drums around the 3 minute mark. The synth at 4:30 is pretty neat as well.

Renata Glasc has some pretty interesting instrumentation to it. I like the winds particularly. The melody doesn't do a ton for me however. Probably good enough to beat its competition though.

I still haven't found an Umineko song that's really stood out to me (though I haven't listened to that many yet). liberatedliberator is ok, but not really something I'd go back to. I like the violin portions, and that's about it. The rest is just kinda there for me.

Decent day today, but could be better.

Crocus is the version of Hayato Asano I'm not quite as into. Limitless is a good groove. Kinda feels based on Hamauzu's style of music, though not the same of course.

gotta believe is some good Kajiura. I feel like it should be fuller though? Like it needs more instruments or something? It's a little hollow. Geometric Dance is good too. Could go either way on this one.

I thought Renata was pretty cool when I heard it, but it's not like it ever stood a chance against LL... I like every song today!

re: Renata Glasc, The Chem-Baroness

supported day 1, doubled

I love how smoky this track feels. Solo violin is often a centrepiece in League tracks but it's the clarinet and flute that captivate me here, arranged beautifully. The electronic drums that come in at 0:42 make the track strut with authority; it's a really cool expression of the character this theme is for. But more than anything it's a few specific musical phrases-- the one that first shows up at 0:31 with the major third, and the variation on the main melody at 2:17, which keep me hooked on this track. They just work so well-- a small shift that makes the whole track so much more compelling to me. This was one of my favourite tracks to encounter in the run-up to nominations, and one I've revisited as many times as any in the contest.

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout - Crocus
ONGEKI SUMMER - GEOMETRIC DANCE (Long Ver.)
Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru - liberatedliberator

MATCH 1

I absolutely love Crocus! It's my #1 favorite song in Bracket D and has solidified itself as a big favorite of mine for Atelier series songs in general. When I first heard this during the first crowdsource list, I believe, I knew I liked it, but it took a bit of time for me to reach my current feelings on the song. Eventually, I'd start putting this song on at times when I felt like doing so, and by that point, I knew that the song became quite special to me. This was going to be a day 1 nomination from me, but I actually got beaten to it! I just love the heartfelt emotion this song conveys. The song's great all throughout, but it gets better as it goes on, starting with 1:34. I like the soft and cozy instrumental up to that point, but the change to the more full instrumentation is certainly an exciting one to me. And oh man, what an amazing transition at 2:08! Everything about this part just feels perfect. I think the way the rest of the song sounds after those two transitions reflects a more colorful view that the lyrics portray (e.g., from "monochrome" to "colorful" in how the crocus is described). The change in instrumentation as well as the key change really adds that brighter energy to the song. The chord changes at 3:42 and 3:46 and other times during that part are really nice as well. And on the subject of key changes, the last key change at 4:15 is great as well. This song is also another example of me liking lyrics where I ordinary wouldn't pay a whole lot of attention to them. I have a lot of appreciation for those sappy lyrics with lines like "It's your hand I'll hold to go explore" and "I'll wipe your tears." I feel like it's related to me being a fan of romcom anime and visual novels lol. Anyway, yeah, this song is amazing, and it's clear from how much I gush about it compared to what little I tend to say these days about many other songs (though sometimes I don't have a lot to say about songs I really love either!).

Limitless Cinderella is a cool song too! I like the guitar at 0:04, and 0:45 is pretty nice too. The song has a pretty solid melody overall.

MATCH 2

I've never been a huge fan of Yuki Kajiura's orchestral works, and We've Got to Believe in Something is no exception unfortunately. I just don't really find anything to latch onto and say "wow, that's cool!" Godsibb's pretty much the only song of hers where the orchestra elements was well-suited towards my music tastes. Well, on the video game side, at least, because I really like Magia from Madoka Magica too. It might be because both of those are more "powerful" songs in my mind, and maybe that's more what I'm looking for out of a song like that? Can't say for sure.

There are much better prog sounding songs in the bracket than Geometric Dance, but I like it enough to take it over its opponent. Melodically, it's better in some parts than others. I like it the most at parts like 2:18-2:44 where it's a bit more...diatonic, I guess?

MATCH 3

I like this slightly eerie and mysterious melody that Renata Glasc has. It makes me feel like I'm exploring an old, abandoned mansion.

liberatedliberator is probably one of the weaker of the big zts Umineko songs for me. I've always felt like it took a little bit too long to get going, but once it does get going at the 0:55 mark, it does all the cool melodic stuff one can expect from one of these songs that I really enjoy. And what the song does do well, it sounds great!
