Gave it a shot after seeing the love it got in the Game of Gen tourney noms...

I'm nearing the end now, and I gotta say MMV feels inspired. You can tell the creators were eager to take risks and have fun with this one. The "boomerang fist" charge shot adds so much to the experience that I wish they had made it a series staple. Also digging the level design gimmicks (Neptune's exploding steam pipes, Mars' land mines, etc.).

Kind of but not really. You're going against the bosses from the NES games with (mostly) aesthetically-identical levels and music. But the level layouts aren't the same as the NES games and the boss weaknesses are changed around. And the Wily stages are all brand new

It didn't register in my head that it was written with a roman numeral and the NES ones aren't

The Arabic vs Roman numerals thing is only consistent on the western box art, the games title screens dont always follow this rule and in Japan the Game Boy games are titled Rockman World 1-5

II is definitely not up to par with the games its borrowing from though. Only played III once, couldn't really say for it.

Though since NES size limitations at the time held the first game to 6 robot masters, the first GB game had no such limitation.

It just... Skipped the very existence of bomb and guts man and stuck four MM2 Robot Masters in instead. All the games are notably split into a 4-4 format where you kill 4, then another 4. MMIV goes a step further, because even the boss music will change to MM5's.

And then MMV was ambitious and unfortunately just got.. Nowhere?

I actually own a working copy of all the MM GB and NES games, played them many times.

3 is as bad as 1 and then the series difficulty just tanks after there. Damage slowly becomes normalized and the charge shot blows through basic mobs.

If there's any Megaman game you want to try a "challenge run" (no deaths/subweapons/etanks/etc.), I present to you MM6. You do need to use the Tomahawk or Jet to actually hit one of the Wily Castle bosses though, so that doesn't count because it's mandatory in the game design. Jet's the more baller play though.

Yeah its been a while since I played it but I need to again. Phenomenal game. The first four are mostly solid, and II has an unfairly maligned soundtrack (Some of the better melodies in a Mega Man game, but some pretty unfortunate pitching issues), but they're all good fun.

I did in fact play all 5 games over July 4th weekend.
Still think Dr. Wily's Revenge is better than 1. Still think Il pretty whatever; Quint in particular might be a contender for most pathetic boss in all of Mega Man. Kinda liked the final boss of III, but not much else stood out. The Mega Man 3 remix levels in particular feel redundant because Mega Man 3 already remixed half of them in its own game. Mega Man IV was probably the best of the first four but nothing that special.

Mega Man V is the best of these and is a good game, and even moreso a unique game that's not mostly a remix of levels of the NES, but it's still probably not on as good as any of 2-6. The Wily levels aren't very good, although some of the end game bosses were neat. The game particularly seemed to like forcing you to drop screens vertically onto places with spikes below (to an unusual degree even for Mega Man) - and the Game Boy's smaller resolution was particularly not well suited for this. When Dr. Wily's Revenge pulled stuff like that in the last couple levels, there you at least had the Carry to potentially save you. They kept giving me pity Mega Arm upgrades for losing I didn't ask for that seemed in combination with the buyable upgrades to kinda unbalance the game. The Super Game Boy colors are a nice attempt but still obviously falls short of the NES games' aesthetic.

Oh and MMV has an interesting game-trivia question attached to it.

It's the only "Classic Megaman" game in which Dr. Wily is not the final boss. The actual final boss almost kills him!

Also, in reference to the post above, both MMIV and MMV have hidden upgrades if you get 4 consecutive game overs in the same stage without moving to a new stage. The one in IV makes the Mega Buster charged shot much larger. The one in V I believe makes the arm shoot both faster and more powerfully.

There's one other - the Japanese-only Rockman & Forte sequel for the Wonderswan. Dr. Wily doesn't even appear in it at all. It is, somehow, a canon Mega Man game, despite being utterly terrible shovelware that nobody has played or even heard of.

This is a fair assessment of MMV. The Wily levels were indeed underwhelming (although, honestly, I tend to hate the Wily gauntlet, so this didn't bother me much).

I disagree with you on MMV not being as good as 2-6. V shits all over 6, and I would take it over 5 as well. The Mega Arm gives MMV an identity. 1 introduced the concept, 2 greatly improved the concept, 3 introduced the slide, 4 introduced the charge shot, and then 5 & 6 played it safe. I love that MMV took risks, and for me, that elevates the game above most of the original series.

Yeah I'd rather play Mega Man V over anything that isn't 2, 3, or 5 myself. It's just got a lot of interesting ideas and creative decisions. It's been a while since I've played it so I can't go into specifics but at the time I played it (have the original cart) I remember enjoying it just because it really put itself out there.

There's something I just like about the level design and soundtrack and even the story direction in Mega Man 5 (and I don't think Mega Man 4 deserves props for introducing the charge shot because it's kinda overpowered in that game-- Mega Man 5 charge shot is better thought out) that makes me rank it high so adding new ideas isn't everything, but like the new stuff Mega Man V tries makes it a more interesting play than the Mega Man games that aren't on that top tier.
