World swimmings governing body has adopted new rules for transgender athletes, only permitting swimmers who transitioned before age 12 to compete in womens events. FINA members voted 71.5% in favor of the new gender inclusion policy at the organizations extraordinary general congress on Sunday. It will apply to all its events from Monday. The ruling would seemingly exclude University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas from elite competition. The 24-page policy also includes proposals for a new open competition category. FINA said it was setting up a new working group that will spend the next six months looking at the most effective ways to set up this new category. The vote came after members heard presentations from three specialist groups an athlete group, a science and medicine group and a legal and human rights group that had been working together to form the policy following recommendations given by the International Olympic Committee last November. The IOC urged shifting the focus from individual testosterone levels and calling for evidence to prove when a performance advantage existed.

In March, Lia Thomas made history in the United States as the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming championship. She won the 500-yard freestyle. Other sports have also been examining their rules. On Thursday, cyclings governing body updated its eligibility rules for transgender athletes with stricter limits that will force riders to wait longer before they can compete. The International Cycling Union (UCI) increased the transition period on low testosterone to two years, and lowered the maximum accepted level of testosterone.

Since people totally only care about sportsmanship, does this mean these same people will push to be more accepting to trans kids younger? I doubt t it.

Another source gives a quote that answers this directly.

https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/34116871/fina-votes-restrict-transgender-women-elite-competition

"This is not saying that people are encouraged to transition by the age of 12. It's what the scientists are saying, that if you transition after the start of puberty, you have an advantage, which is unfair," James Pearce, the spokesperson for FINA president Husain Al-Musallam, told The Associated Press. "They're not saying everyone should transition by age 11; that's ridiculous. You can't transition by that age in most countries, and hopefully you wouldn't be encouraged to. Basically, what they're saying is that it is not feasible for people who have transitioned to compete without having an advantage."

Nope. Anybody who transitions that young will have their parents locked up for child abuse. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't scenario.

So banning trans athletes unless they transition before puberty, but can't give gender affirming care to children because "child abuse".

What's the point of them wording the rule like that then to immediately explain it as "haha this is a total ban because no one's gonna let you transition that young!"

It's impossible to transition at that age in the way that would allow them to compete. It's some goofy ass plausible deniability. Say trans people can compete, but make the hurdles impossible to overcome.

A man is still going to be significantly stronger and all around more physically capable than a women of same weight and height, assuming they're training for the same event.

In relevant news, recommended age limits for transition are lowering.

Seriously. I couldn't reasonably compete in most sports as a kid because of biological disadvantages. No one wept for my hurt feelings.

This stuff is so transparent no matter how many times people try to gaslight that the debate only exists to protect fairness and the self-esteem of female athletes.

It's much harder than that. Look at weightlifting records between male and female divisions in same or similar weight classes. You're still looking at a 30-40% performance difference.

This is a horrible situation for all involved, though.

Telling trans people that they are subhuman filth is not fair, though.

Some things are more important than women occasionally losing to other women and feeling upset that they weren't the best.

And again, the best solution would be to support trans kids even more so that they never go through the wrong puberty. Too bad this was never about fairness.

If there was a sports league for high lactic acid producers that would actually be a fair argument to make. You'd have every reason to ban low lactic acid producers from it.

Either do away with gendered sport or protect its divisions, or redefine whatever the division is to be fair and inclusive in a way that actually makes sense. But don't create divisions and then undermine any basis for them, that last one makes absolutely no sense.

Never play sports again. You're making them choosing between playing sports and being their true selves.

At this point, I'd respect anti-LGBTQ people more if they said "fuck you" and slapped people in the face. At least they'd be honest instead of acting for... no one's benefit. Their supporters hear the whistle and their critics know its being blown. This is all part of their agenda.
