That was the very last of the movies I did not like. Genuinely no winner left I'd be unhappy with. My lowest left is 17, but it is one I quite enjoy and is just that low because of how good the list is. Looking back again, it would probably be 15 or 14 if I was re-ranking things.

Still think we're on pace for a Get Out champion here. I feel like it's the one most likely to dodge any scoring in the 20+ range from the handful of spots we have left. I think that would be really fitting, too. I feel like it was definitely the most iconic and culturally relevant horror film of the 2010's.

And 1, 2, 7, 8, 12, 17 for me.

Well, audience scores are always low for horror. With IMDB I just add on one point if its a horror film haha. Even Get Out, which is as much of a mix of crowd-pleasing and artistic as a horror film can be only has a 7.7 which is a good score but not reflective of its high level of praise. The Exorcist barely makes the top 250. There are people who just react negatively to all horror films, as well as it just being a very subjective genre. It is no surprise that if you ranked these films by IMDB, aside from crowd-pleasers in Get Out and The Conjuring, the top of the list would be dominated by the entries that arent pure horror: Train to Busan, A Quiet Place, Tucker and Dale, Split, and so on.

In the specific case of The VVitch, when it released it got hit with low audience scores because people felt the marketing was misleading. After that initial wave though, word of mouth was very, very strong and it stuck around in the box office charts for ages as a result. It is one of the films that made A24. So if you resurveyed people about The VVitch today it would get significantly better scores. I definitely wouldnt put too much stock into the scores it got on release. What I am surprised by is it topping The Lighthouse.

What surprised me about the VVitch was just how low the audience score was on Rotten Tomatoes. I think it was for spot 26 I happened to check all of the Rotten Tomatoes scores and 4 of the 5 movies with an audience score under 60 had already dropped and the only one that hadnt was The VVitch. Like it is VHS, Chucky, Terrifier, Bird Box and then VVitch and those are movies it has no business being anywhere close to.

Im also interested in everyones write ups because I am surprised that people are surprised that it beat out Lighthouse. I guess I am a little surprised that both made top ten because I thought wed be very split on both of these and expected them right around 15 or so.

Agree. You can't make a funny horror film, and it almost entirely not be funny. I think this is one of the movies that may have been funny at the time it came out, but just isn't funny anymore. Maybe if I saw this then and not now I'd have a different opinion. There is movies that are hilarious then due to whatever but just don't remain funny. Waiting is a good example of something funny when it was released but just is absolutely just not funny now. This is probably one of them.

I'm also stunned that The VVitch has survived this long. Totally expected it to be more polarizing with a spread of Top 5 and Bottom 5 rankings. It feels like I'm the only one who hates it (and Eggers' style in general. This guy just isn't for me).

Very true. Back in mid-2016 all my horror-loving friends couldn't stop raving about it. I literally couldn't escape the word of mouth. Even when I met Thomas Olde Heuvelt (the guy who wrote HEX) at a writers conference, the first words out of his mouth after signing a book for me were, "Have you seen The VVitch yet?"

In the previous topic, somebody said it's a movie that's "frightening," but that's way too subjective.
