I am surprised The VVitch has made it this far. I know it's well received critically, but its audience score and imdb score are very unimpressive, so I figured it would translate that way here.

Well, audience scores are always low for horror. With IMDB I just add on one point if its a horror film haha. Even Get Out, which is as much of a mix of crowd-pleasing and artistic as a horror film can be only has a 7.7 which is a good score but not reflective of its high level of praise. The Exorcist barely makes the top 250. There are people who just react negatively to all horror films, as well as it just being a very subjective genre. It is no surprise that if you ranked these films by IMDB, aside from crowd-pleasers in Get Out and The Conjuring, the top of the list would be dominated by the entries that arent pure horror: Train to Busan, A Quiet Place, Tucker and Dale, Split, and so on.

In the specific case of The VVitch, when it released it got hit with low audience scores because people felt the marketing was misleading. After that initial wave though, word of mouth was very, very strong and it stuck around in the box office charts for ages as a result. It is one of the films that made A24. So if you resurveyed people about The VVitch today it would get significantly better scores. I definitely wouldnt put too much stock into the scores it got on release. What I am surprised by is it topping The Lighthouse.
