I watched Somali and the Forest Spirit today. I enjoyed it, it had that blend of SoL and fantasy/supernatural that I always like. The monsters hating humans so much felt a bit heavy-handed, but all of it was presented as old stories, exaggerated and corrupted by time, to justify their hatred. I didn't mind it. I think it would've been better if the ending was a bit more definitive, though.

If the golem is breaking down soon, go ahead and do it. Have Somali be sad but do something with the 'the dead turn into spirits' angle the final episode had so that she knows he's still with her. It could've been heartwrenching and instead it was merely okay.

Still, it was a fun show. Somali was cute and the golem was a neat character too. He was like the terminator in T2 trying to comprehend emotions.

Somali's pretty good, and yeah, it would've been nice if the anime could've concluded the story. The manga stopped getting new chapters before the anime even came out due to the author's illness, so at least one version could've gotten a real ending...

As seemingly everyone predicted one piece 1049 will be the kaido childhood flashback. Luckily it seems to last only the single chapter.

Starting to wonder if Birdie Wing is prepared to go full Samurai Flamenco.

I haven't seen SF to understand the reference, but Birdie Wing is going places. I swear every episode raises it in my rankings a little bit.

Samurai Flamenco is a tragically forgotten series and I would recommend going into it completely blind if you're ever looking for a series for a rainy day.

Samurai Flamenco was so bad it killed the studio and most people hated it at the time. The start was promising, but the end's terrible.

Listen you can't account for people having shit taste.

The Thing was panned by critics and a financial failure when it came out to.

Samurai Flamenco deserves just as much credit.

Also you can't blame SC exclusively for Manglobe shutting down. Sure it sold like shit but everything they made sold like shit. In the entirety of their operation not a single series they made ever exceeded 5k in sales, and only one ever exceeded 4k. They couldn't produce a hit.

I like enough unpopular shows (AICO is still in my top ten, that's how crazy I am) and dislike enough popular shows to rarely let popularity be much of a factor! I'll at least add SF to the list I keep in a notepad file. It sounds familiar though so I think it might already be on there from a few years ago. The list is long

I'm 22 episodes into Karakuri Circus. I'm far enough along that I'll probably still finish it, but, man, this show is nonsense. The first four episodes were a neat and cohesive story about a boy being chased by evil puppets, protected by an acrobat and a guy with a disease where he dies unless he makes people laugh. That was fun, but it feels so long ago now. I don't know what the fuck is happening anymore, there have been multiple full flashback episodes about some history-spanning fight between good vs evil and I just can't care about any of it. The pacing is also way too fast and constantly jumping around. I swear, with no scene transition or explanation between them, one character went from surviving an airplane crash in Japan to being in the jungles of China months later. It's sad when a neat idea makes all the wrong decisions as if it's trying to purposefully avoid being good.

One of the evil puppets had a literal life-sized merry-go round attached to his head, and sawblades came out the sides and he used them to cut people. Why couldn't the whole anime have been about zany puppet fights like that instead of this weird reincarnation destiny romance... thing.

I liked the first full arc of Karakuri Circus a lot, seemed like a major sleeper hit, characters were great. Then it just went...in a direction.

It's never too late to drop a series

Not sure you've read it LtM, but Our Teachers Are Dating has been fully localized now. It's four volumes of extremely fluffy yuri that somehow still has consistent relationship progress. I wouldn't say it's great, but it's generally enjoyable.

I would happily read multiple chapters of Kaido backstory. There is a lot to explore there.

Im up to chapter 415 in One Piece how. Im really enjoying this Water 7/Eines Lobby arc a lot. But wow, did Luffy really get Gear 2 and 3 off screen in like a couple days??

Best arc, yeah he says he learned it by watching how they did rokushiki or whatever the translation is.

I know this is true, especially since refusing to drop shows I don't like arguably killed my anime interest once already. I just don't want to let them beat me!

Karakuri Circus is more baffling than bad, too. I'll probably take a break for a few days but I do want to see if it can bring all this nonsense together somehow

If you want a barely talked about Shounen action series with wierd puppets that'd ACTUALLY excellent, you should go back and check out Gash Bell!

That is an excellent question. It seems to be a reference to car gears but those don't exist in that world. So I guess Luffy just made it up out of nowhere.

Also just as a reminder Gold Roger died 20 years before the story and Luffy is only 17. So he could never have been Roger's kid.

Very strange how Murata decided to take this arc in a completely different direction tonally. You'd think with the superior art he could take what was a pretty serious moment in the webcomic and raise the drama further, but instead it just feels like a big joke.

Oh yeah it is. I mean even the Garou accidentally saves civilians gag is pretty good so it's not like it's missing the mark for what it's going for.

But then also why not drag this out for a bit longer when so many of the unimportant fights went on for ages.

I started watching Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun last night. It has two seasons so I still have a lot to catch up on. I'm enjoying it though. All the characters are fun but Clara is predictably my favorite so far. Ameri is a close second. It's reminding me of My Hero Academia a lot, which I'm sure isn't an original comparison but it's new to me. Class of characters with weird powers, well-meaning main guy who doesn't really have powers but he kind of does, there was even a race early on to grade them just like in MHA. Iruma-kun is a much less serious show so far, but I like that tone. If it does end up getting more dramatic later, I'm curious to see how they'll make that work

It's okay, but I felt the humor got pretty repetitive.

Yeah that's fair. One Piece transcends time and space for the sake of cool references.

In Johnbobb's topic tiering how much characters from films need a therapist, two of the movies looked anime-ish (they might not be, I don't follow movies at all so I could only name Sonic and Dr. Strange from the pictures). I searched 2022 anime movies and couldn't find them, but I found another recent anime movie instead!

I watched Bubble on Netflix today. I liked it, but I felt like it should've been a lot better than it was. The production was top-notch, the music and visuals were both beautiful and there were a few sections where they both came together in a way I can only describe as epic. Like there was one bit in the middle that, once I finished watching the movie, I immediately went back and watched that part again. And then again. As a pure spectacle, this movie delivered.

As a story... not so much. It's about bubbles randomly raining on the world, but mostly in Tokyo, and screwing with gravity in strange ways. The movie doesn't even try to explain anything. No one really questions anything either, not even when a strange girl appears out of nowhere and turns to bubbles when she touches the main guy. Like the main scientist lady sees Uta's hand partially turned into bubbles and her only reaction is to give her a glove, come on. Still, it's mostly a parkour anime, so I suspect the whole bubble aspect was just an excuse to have crazy parkour scenes. Those scenes definitely delivered so I guess that's fine. I just would've preferred more substance to go along with the spectacle. The main conflict at the end was yandere bubbles and I don't know how or why or what actually happened, but I guess it was pretty?

I don't regret watching it, not at all. This is easily the best stand-alone anime movie I've ever watched (beating out absolute trash in Calamity of the Zombie Girl and mediocre trash like Starlight Promises and Expelled from Paradise... come to think of it, why haven't I watched any of the really good anime movies? I know they're out there). It just should've been better.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch that four minute stretch in the middle of the movie for a fourth time.

Glad I'm not the only one here who has seen it! What's saddest about it is the plot could've been good if it focused on one thing, either the parkour or the supernatural bubble plot. As it was, neither one got enough focus in the movie, and they didn't really mesh together either. Ah well, at least a few sequences were still really well-made.

I yelled at the screen every time they explicitly referenced The Little Mermaid. Has the writer (apparently the person who wrote the Gravity Rush games) never heard of subtlety???

Tiger and Bunny done, so Netlfix is also done. CR already has way too much fucking stuff, and I don't think I've touched Netflix for anything except Castlevania, Live Action Bebop, and Tiger and Bunny for like a year. Time to save up for that fucking sports streaming service in a month.
