The thing is if I really wanted to see one of them chicks nude all I would have to do is look at her name and then simply Google, Jane Doe nude. And boom! There she is nude. No money necessary.

I always thought it was insane even before it was ubiquitous since OnlyFans. At this point, just don't be a minimum wage or slightly higher warehouse employee at Walmart and give a girl what amounts to one dinner at an uptown bistro with 2 glasses of wine with her boyfriend. You're paying for her boyfriend's nice meal while you're behind on the utility bill and eating top ramen.

For a certain type of person, there will always be the vain hope in the back of your mind that the girl who's pretending to like you will eventually fall for you for real if you just give her enough money. Or presents. Or whatever. Sure, she's just stringing along those other guys, but you're the one she really likes.

Of course, there's another sort of person who is just acting on the assumption that if you keep giving these people money, they will keep producing new content, but if they don't make enough money they'll stop.

As ages kind of implied with his parasocial relationship comment, it's not too different from the mentality of people who tip on Twitch or donate via Patreon to creators they like. In some cases it's just supporting content to increase the odds there'll be more content in the future, while for some people it's part of the sad one-sided non-relationship they feel like they have with a content creator. They're my friend, so of course I'll help tip them! And if I tip them enough, they'll say my name on stream, and maybe they'll start liking me...

plus even if they aren't explicitly hoping for anything in particular to happen, paying money also makes them feel like they're "part of the community." as someone who enjoys vtubers from a distance, i see it all the time

Yeah, I've never been able to relate to this either. I've always been averse to ratting people out or reporting people unless it's a serious crime.

I've heard people say their waifu pay them in content. I've heard some say they just don't want others getting what they got for free, etc.

I had a friend who got mad that people buying the Deathfinitive Edition of Darksiders 2 got all the launch/pre-order stuff he got, only now it is years later.
