Why would Will Smith do something that will clearly damage his career as a stunt? Like, his whole career up to this point has been based around a rather clean image.

Even if the Oscars organized some sort of joke altercation, they certainly wouldn't risk FCC trouble by also having Will curse like that. This being a stunt makes no sense.

So the theory is that The Oscars needed buzz because no one gives a crap about them anymore so this scheme was concocted.

Why this falls apart, however, is the reality is The Oscars have fallen far enough that Will Smith and Chris Rock are literally bigger than The Oscars at this point and as such wouldn't do this. It's actually beneath them to damage their image to lift The Oscars.

That's an incredibly human reaction. It's a comedy routine on stage, your conditioned immediate reaction as an audience member is to laugh before you even truly process the joke.

I think it was Will spinning his wheels and manufacturing the outrage as he processed Jada's own reaction. I think, in that sense, it's not wholly legitimate. Part of me thinks the anger from his seat afterwards was also made of some level of fear and embarrassment having done what he did. So maybe I'm just arguing another side of the same thing as Yoblazer.

yeah this is my take on that, I've seen enough comedy central roasts to understand the concept of putting up a face when the cameras are expected to be on you for your reaction (and evidently they were)

it's not really a conversation I find any worth in digging into

Yeah, for stuff like that, you almost laugh out of habit more than because something is actually funny, but I'm guessing seeing his wife's reaction (and the fact that he's been memed for the last couple years as being a cuck) probably pushed him over the edge.

The level of outrage may be a bit manufactured, but I think it was just a random thing that finally made Will Smith hit his breaking point for whatever the reason.

I had a thought that it was supposed to be a fake slap from Will as a sort of joke but then he actually hit Chris and decided to feign real anger instead of playing it off like a joke.

Like do you remember clowning around with your brother and then you accidentally hurt them or knock something out of their hand and it breaks? Then instead of being like "oh my god I'm so sorry that was an accident" you pretend like you were actually mad and not joking around like "well why were you making me mad in the first place you should have known this would happen!". So even though you weren't really mad you double down on the anger instead of apologizing I guess?

I kinda got those vibes from Will, especially with how fake that slap looked. Meant to be a joke, actually slapped him, doubled down on the anger instead of apologizing. I mean you can't actually slap someone in the face then pretend it was an accident, you kinda have to double down in that situation.

Yeah. This is my feeling.

It's not entirely "fake" per se cause I don't think he was like, pretending to be mad because Jada was. But he was only mad because of processing that Jada was, and I don't think he like, needed to slap Chris Rock based entirely on how he was feeling-- the slap was all him overcompensating for feeling guilty because he laughed and then doubling down on the overcompensation by shouting from his seat because he realized he made a fool of himself by slapping Chris Rock.

It's embarrassing but what can you do.

Oh I definitely think whatever he was dealing with in his marriage beforehand (which I wasn't really aware of until last night) was festering in him and led to a breaking point last night. Straw breaking the camel's back and all.

Interestingly, I chatted with a few of my students about it today, and they all "sided" with Smith, or at least really sympathized with him. I was definitely surprised, since my main frame of reference last night was GameFAQs, and most people here seemed to be tearing him a new one.

I can't see why you would stage that specifically. I get the idea of staging something crazy to get people talking about the Oscars, but that's a random thing to fake. Staged was my split-second reaction because it was so bizarre, but it just doesn't make any sense for it to have been.

There's no way "the academy" could actually stage something entertaining. And there's no way established big names like Smith and Rock would go along with this shit because "the academy" asked them to.

I'm much more likely to believe that the two guys went into business for themselves and worked everyone (pro wrestling style) than I am to believe that this was a large-scale scripted event for the Oscars, as if individual celebrities would care about Oscar ratings in the first place.

Though I don't believe either of those things happened. This was a legit meltdown by Will Smith.

and its not like it really helps the Oscars ratings issues. Im not going to tune in next year with the expectation that something else wild is going to happen.
If anything, I expect there will be some additional stage security to make it less likely anything interesting ever happens again.

Will Smith had every right to lip off right back, but not to whack him. I mean, if his wife was offended (which she clearly was), he's gotta stick up for her. Just not in a way that makes him look like a thug.

This is something that has been brewing inside will ever since the cuckening came out. And the intent was obviously not to hurt Chris but to embarrass him with the slap. Or rather, transfer will's embarrassment and shame of himself onto someone else.

If you're gonna be psycho enough to attack someone on live TV at an awards show over an extremely tame joke, you should do more than just slap them. Like, go full ham.

And then sitting down and breaking into tears over it like that afterward is just so... so fucking shockingly embarrassing. I have never been more embarrassed for a person than I was for Will Smith last night.

Kudos to Chris Rock for barely moving from the slap and also for keeping the show rolling along right after. Excellent showman.

Funny thing is, literally no one would remember that joke today even if Will Smith didn't decide to slap Chris Rock for it. I don't know, it certainly looked real to me, but it's also somewhat hard to believe a 50-something year-old dude who's been in the industry for as long as Will Smith can have such poor impulse control. And the joke itself wasn't even crude or anything. Like if he made a joke about Will getting cucked or his wife being a ho maybe I'd understand it a bit more.
