I saw the interviews about it. It's blatant that SHE opened it, and quite possibly "unofficially" before asking. She talks about how she "needed" it, never a word about him wanting it (just that they "agreed" to it, but nothing about his enthusiasm for it), and he has super uncomfortable body language as she talks.

No matter if something is legitimate, if it happens on TV in front of the world there will always be speculation of it being staged. Janet Jackson at the Superbowl and Taylor/Kayne had the same speculation that continues to this day.

In this instance, whether it's real or staged doesnt matter because it was a really stupid decision for Will Smith to do this because it was an act of violence and hate and will unavoidably damage his reputation because of the sensitive time we live in.
