Ridiculously unfun boss indeed
Between the fieldwide gravity explosion and the attack where he corners you until you die. Ughh

He feels way stronger than the amount of runes he gives implies. Unless it was one of those "use blunt weapon" guys but I dont think he was

Went back and found the cave next to the radahn fight. Kind of glad i didn't do it right away, the basic mobs would have wrecked me.

That boss though? I understand why they need to level up the boss stats but it is really frustrating that the reskins are so much stronger than the base models. The room is barely big enough to identify when he's doing to do the grab attack, which is an instant ko for me. Fun.

i got through part one ok then part two went not so good

so now I just spent a bunch of time helping people out for rune arcs

Im already such a high level I should be able to handle this

I did a sweep of the map to make see what stuff I missed to give me a break from her, and now I think Ive done literally everything in the game other than this fight and the last couple story areas

Honestly, I kind of like that with mimic Tear and Sword of Night and Flame I am able to just breeze past a lot of the mini bosses.

There are a lot of the bosses where this strategy doesn't work which are still hard, but dying to random minions has never been my favorite part of Souls games.

I would definitely classify the bosses in three buckets.

First one is the traditional one, which are doable solo no problem (or at least, seem balanced that way and are no harder than your typical Souls boss).

Second one is those bosses that were clearly designed to be done with spirit summons. Almost all the endgame bosses are in that bucket. Those are way too hard without summons, and way too easy with them. Godskin Duo is probably the poster child here - absolutely maddening and a horrible experience solo; a complete joke with Mimic +10. I'm really annoyed by this since I'm not satisfied with either option tbh.

Third is just Malenia. Who is extremely hard and RNG-dependent *with* Mimic +10 and a cheese build, and without question the hardest boss FromSoft has ever produced when done solo/without cheesing. Defiled Watchdog of the Old Lords has nothing on that boss.

What I'm thinking of doing on replays is a self-limitation that (1) before/during Leyndell, I am not able to summon (other than Radahn), and (2) after Leyndell, I am only able to summon during phase 2 of the fight.

The idea being that if they have a phase 2, then I have a phase 2 as well. That forces some equilibrium, requiring mastery of at least part of the fight, while still allowing for evening things out when things get really dicey. Plus, finding a window during phase 2 to safely lose half your hp to summon Mimic adds an extra layer of challenge.

I lost an obscene amount of souls in my playthrough, way more than any game before. Losing 40k stung the most, yet now in the endgame I can run around with that amount and it's barely noticeable. So it balanced out at least.

Still have yet to finish. I tend to squeeze every ounce of content out of a game when I don't want it to end, so I'm putting off the final bosses. Might not even bother with Melania honestly. Just wanna get to ng+ with all these upgraded weapons of mine.

Gotta say though, the mountaintops are gorgeous. I'm just a tad disappointed there isn't a whole lot there, was expecting a castle/dungeon to rival Cainhurst in aesthetic.

Castle Sol was too frustrating and didn't allow time to appreciate the view

I've been rocking Skeletal Militia for much of the game and they're incredible. They don't really have much health, but they're skeletons and revive endlessly as long as the boss doesn't finish them off, which they very rarely do.

So here I am, doing the entire Millicent questline because it grants you a special needle which is the only way to reverse the Frenzied Flame (necessary so that the player can see other endings). I'm doing all this gleefully, thankful that FromSoft is acknowledging that open world games are different, and thus should have minimal lockouts so that a player can experience as much as possible in one playthrough. After completing 99% of the questline, the final step involves warping to the lair of a secret boss, as that is the only place you can use the needle (for some fucking reason).

Of course, I just realized that since I've already beaten said boss, I can't re-warp to its lair to use the needle. I did 99% of the work just to learn I'm still locked out.

Radahn Soldiers are pretty good too. They have fire weapons so they have decent offensive capability. Looks like Leyndell soldier ashes would be the other side of that as they have greatshields. Send them out if you just want something that can tank hits as you focus on damage.

Across the Roots Site of Grace in the Deeproot area. 3 stationary enemies directly next to it giving 3-4k souls each depending on your buff. Kill the 3, teleport, repeat.

I'm actually referring to the removal of the Frenzied Flame itself, which is only done by the needle.

Regardless, turns out I was wrong about everything lol. You *can* warp back to that lair (you open up a Site of Grace there that I completely forgot about), but even that doesn't matter, since I had already beaten the game with the Frenzied Flame ending. I chose not to jump into NG+ under the impression that I can try for other endings if I managed to reverse the Frenzied Flame, but nope. One playthrough, one ending.

I assume the only way around that might be cloud-save shenanigans, but I've never bothered with that in any game.

Fire Eagle Birds remain the most frustrating. The centipede men are the most annoying with the most busted tracking spell in Souls history and their ridiculous movement, but they were never really a threat unless you got teleported there early game.

The thing with bears and the dual sword ice men later in the game is that I just didn't engage those enemies and never really had to outside of minibosses. Eagles and Centipedes can't be avoided in most circumstances

Just beat the Valiant Gargoyles. That was definitely the hardest fight I've done in the game so far but I would 100% disagree with anyone saying that fight was somehow less fair or worse designed than the Maneaters or even the OG DS1 Gargoyles. Took a little less than an hour of attempts - during which I totally mastered their move sets - and the feeling of satisfaction of landing the last blow there was unreal.
