Love his work and the Mario Kart 64 video about world record perfection deserves awards (however out of date it has since become). It does seem like Summoning Salt makes multiple videos of the same games I understand he was already familiar with (Mario Kart 64, Super Mario Bros. 1, and Punch-Out immediately come to mind). Nothing wrong with that, just looking for some variation from them and his other videos now.

What are other games with interesting speed-run histories I can learn about through online videos? And what are some other channels doing similar work as Summoning Salt with regards to recognizing the history of speed run world record progression?

Yes I've known all the Kart and GE and PD personalities for 20+ years and all this history was my life.

I would recommend just enjoying the history and videos for what they are and not researching the behind the scenes reddit drama. When there's an archive of everything you've said since you were 13, there's going to be some stuff you're not so proud of when you're now semi-famous and in your 30s.

yeah, i think i overdosed on summoning salt when he was starting to get big

after a while i can only listen to the same songs while hearing him talk about the same games so many times

The problem is that he got so big that other similar channels started copying his mannerisms, music, and catchphrases, so now any time you hear them they sound like parody, even coming from the original guy in their original context.

It's worth remembering that Punch Out is the series that he has the most experience with and he makes videos about what he knows or what interests him rather than aiming for a broad spectrum of games

Ideally, other people besides him would make stuff about the histories of other things, but only a few people have and nobody's caught on like he has - nor have many people produced works as good as his

I'm kind of surprised he hadn't already DONE Super Punch-Out, but it's extraordinarily clear watching the video why he chose to do it now

Eh I'd say the issue is that I've found other creators who do it almost as good (or better!) except with games I care about waaay more. The choice of game matters as much as for me as the producer themselves and I really just don't care to watch the record history of Wii Sports, or a 10th video on Mario Kart.

By the way, like, if whatever the drama was was no big deal you can just say that and I'd believe you, but "there's going to be some stuff you're not so proud of" like... I mean yeah but I won't handwave EVERYTHING with that

Our generation is definitely the first of its kind regarding Ngamer's point with online records of people growing up, and that's something we just never foresaw or understood in quite the same way future generations will. Some things that were joked or said in the 1990s and 2000s aren't now (or shouldn't be) -- and it's hard to always figure out the right line of cringe, grace, and reflection to give as people who are now in 2022 looking back at past behaviors. Paratroopa's also right that some things can be handwaved and some can not, so...it's a weird line. Youth feels so smart at its peak, yet time and hindsight can humble most people who seek their lessons. That's probably a good trait in a person at least, being able to look back and recognizing room to improve.

More to the point of the topic, I really like Bismuth! I got more to check out from here...just takes time.

And ha, funny timing about Summoning Salt. I liked the new Super Punch-Out video and it felt like it had more of a horror-edge to the production than others he's done before.

Do a lot of people care about Super Punch-Out? I always had the impression that the mainstream video game public only cared about the NES game.

Disclaimer: I haven't watched the video yet so I'm hoping that this is addressed within it.

NES Punch-Out is the biggest name. Wii Punch-Out has fans and is my personal favorite.

Super Punch-Out just didn't have the hype of Tyson or quality and quantity of the Wii-make.

This channel has a lot of speedrunning adjacent videos. I found the "A Button challenge" videos absolutely fascinating

i do feel fortunate for growing up with tech-savvy family members that impressed the importance of a) not downloading viruses, b) not doxxing myself online, and c) realizing that nothing on the internet is ever actually guaranteed to be gone

it's why 99% of my online presence is not connected to my "real" socials, and why i was always mentally prepared to burn an account

Maybe I didn't phrase it well and I don't mean to overstate a point that doesn't define the video, but it had some more tense music choices than usual and built up the challenges of randomness in SPO as something more unforgiving than other games he's covered. There's a little red line-visual effect that stuck with me too.

Still pretty much what I expect out of Summoning Salt, but I do think those points are different enough from his other videos to notice.

RetroGameMechanics is hit or miss. Sometimes his videos are incredibly interesting, other times they are boring to tears. I guess it depends on how much you care about the subject matter.

I'd like to throw in Terminal Montage (https://www.youtube.com/c/TerminalMontage) as a channel that does custom animations of various games, but a lot of the jokes he makes are speedrunning related (i.e. Mario doing BLJs constantly, Fox moving as if some neckbeard Melee player is going ham on his Wavebird, etc)

Can confirm Terminal Montage is fantastic and also has the best music at the end of his videos. I've been meaning to rewatch them since hearing he sneaks scripta into his subtitles.
