Not only is "We Don't Talk About Bruno" not nominated for Best Original Song, but apparently Disney didn't even submit it for consideration in the category. My guess is they decided on their submissions before that particular song blew up.

Best Actress remains a complete clusterfuck lol. None of the 5 are in a Best Picture nominee, and they've all missed out on a precursor. Not a clue where that one goes.

I haven't seen Drive My Car yet but I'm happy it's getting support, more international film representation please!

Last year was kind of a lame year for movies.

No Way Home was my favorite movie, but less because it's high art and more because it was entertaining. Dune and Don't Look Up were the only Best Picture nods I saw, neither of which I'm excited to recommend.

I'm sad Spencer only got one nomination. It feels like subject matter the Academy would love while actually being far more interesting than it looks on the surface.

Yeah that would make sense. After all, the ballads usually do well in awards.

Anyway, I'm really happy with the Andrew Garfield shout out, alongside WSS and tick, tick... Boom! itself. Good year for musicals this year. So glad DEH movie definitely didn't happen.

Also wow, Raya, Luca, and Encanto were all last year huh? Interesting selection.

Yeah Disney usually noms the big ballad. I wonder if they're kicking themselves for not picking Bruno now though, it's so big that it would have likely steamrolled everything like Let it Go did.

I thought last year was great, although I would have rathered Tick Tick Boom! or the Tragedy of Macbeth for Best Picture over Dont Look Up, which I still enjoyed. Absolutely loved Dune.

I will say, these films are probably the most accessible they have ever been as nearly all of the big films here are or will soon be on
streaming services. I would really recommend checking them out, its a nice diverse set of films not just stodgy dramas. I would really, really, really recommend CODA though, it is a beautiful film that is also not too heavy.

Hmmm, although western animations keep beating the hell out of Japanese anime movies, I don't really think they're wrong.
The best Disney/Pixar movies are generally better than Japan's offerings.

I wonder how Japan can actually improve on that front, they can make a series of popular 20min episodes, but seriously lacking in the feature film department. Which is a shame.

I haven't seen it personally but everyone dunks on it due to several reasons:
1. Ben Platt plays Evan, despite being obviously in his mid 20s. The makeup or CG work also makes him look older and weirder.
2. They cut songs so now a majority of the songs are sung by Platt. Especially egregious was they cut Anybody Have a Map, making Waving Through a Window the very sad and dramatic opener.
3. The side characters are shoved off to the side.
4. Evan never gets called out for his actions. Good For You is cut.

Of course, watching it yourself can give you a more unbiased look, but yeah

I haven't seen many of the nominees yet but I'm inclined to agree with this anyway, it does look like a pretty great mix of movies. Though I do wish Tick Tick Boom or Macbeth were in BP too. And I'm sad that Passing was snubbed entirely, I had a feeling Ruth Negga would miss but she really really deserved to be here off of that performance.

Some are smaller films that broke out unexpectedly (CODA, Drive My Car), some are films that base their whole marketing strategy around awards nominations (Belfast, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley), and some are big mainstream films (Dont Look Up, Dune, West Side Story). The Power of the Dog is kind of in-between those last two, it did extremely well on Netflix even before the awards hype.

Watched Belfast and CODA.
Belfast is a strange film in that when it finishes you're left thinking wow what a film but the longer you think about it the more issues it has. I can see it's portrayals being VERY polarising, obviously. It reminds me of 8 Mile in the way everyone kind of sees it as a biopic even if that wasn't the intention and that's going to be what a lot of people see, which is a shame. I think the acting is solid. Buddy's innocence and naivety is brilliant, not sure if that's acting or just him being himself though. Ciaran Hinds is excellent. 7/10
CODA has some excellent moments though I'm not as impressed because it's basically La Famille Belier which was only released like 10 year ago. It's predictable but it's not bad. 6/10

Watched The Power of the Dog today. Good acting and well-made, but the story itself didn't grip me that much.

Though to its merit, I thought that it would be about a forbidden love story between Phil and Peter but turns out it's more of a revenge drama.

I didn't enjoy Power of the Dog as much as lots seem to (including the Academy if the 12 nominations are anything to go by), but I still found it an interesting and worthwhile experience. It's definitely a film that grows on you for a while after you've seen it.

I'll probably get through all the nominees available on streaming (though tbh I don't know if I can be bothered with Ricardos), but as always the ones I most want to see are the least widely available >_>

In order to provide more time and opportunity for audience entertainment and engagement through comedy, musical numbers, film clip packages and movie tributes, a change in the shows production will take place.

Lmao they aren't even shortening the broadcast, just cutting awards to show more "skits". This isn't going to bring in an audience, they're just annoying the few people left who watch these. Not to mention the obvious that they're establishing a hierarchy of awards (and film) importance, flipping off entire branches and prioritising the most famous people who already get a ton of attention. Do the people in charge of the Oscars just hate cinema lol, this is so disrespectful. I hope the decision is reversed like it was the other year, but I'm doubtful.

The problem is, there absolutely is a hierarchy - it just happens that two of the lower hierarchy awards also provide star power. Meanwhile, editing absolutely should be near the top of that hierarchy, but the constant bizarre nominations in that category suggests the Academy doesn't actually understand what editing is.

And, really, there should be more awards at this point. Choreography should have come back a while ago, and a Casting or Ensemble award would also be good. It's the stuff between the awards that need trimming (but, again, they don't understand editing). And, of all things, shoving Original Score aside is bonkers - having a montage of the score nominees is usually among the highlights of the night. Even if it was somehow 'less important,' it's a category that works perfectly with the ceremonial aspect.
