so I played XIII at launch and loved it but didnt finish it at the time... got to chapter 11 I think and drifted away from it

like a week or two ago I finally decided to go back and start over and finish it for real and in replaying it realized that I had 100% forgotten everything about the bad guy other than a vague memory of his basic appearance

so now I wonder, like a dozen years after release... do you know his name(s)?

its... barthandelus ! or Galenth Dysley when hes pretending to be a pope

anyway, I beat the game last night and I still like the game and its main cast, but it definitely didnt live up to my first impression in 2009 or whatever

also its fucked up how bad Sazhs stats are. hes obviously the best character in the game, but his numbers were so bad I couldnt use him in my party

Hes a guy who seems to be helping Snow and Fang, but then it turns out he was a lcie too and he gives some speech about destiny or whatever and turns into a monster to try to free the party from their fate by killing them and then somehow hes not actually dead and gets installed as a puppet leader for like one cutscene before getting killed by some other rando

the true antagonist was all those Adamantoises you had to kill to get the platinum

oh i thought he was the main baddie and he later turns into that face on the wall you fight in the end

i did actually finish the game btw

There's a reason why none of the XIII villains have ever been in SMFFFC.

And that reason is we forgot their names.

yeah i have no idea what any of those words mean in the context of the game

they really blew it with all the antagonists. The only other recurring boss is Yaag Rosch who you fight a couple times and hes always a huge dick but for some reason everyones really sad for him after your last fight in a way that seemed totally unearned.

there should have been a bad guy lcie who got their own sick ass Eidolon like the party has. like a version of Leviathan that turns into a battleship or something.

hes a sorta stern looking dude with blue hair. You dont fight him directly, you fight a little mech airship thing he pilots.

Caius Ballad is the best villain in the XIII trilogy

....ok he's got a great villain voice, that's really all it takes

Barthandelus is great. I burst out laughing every time he had a line of dialogue.

I'm a starch defender of XIII (just the first one), but only because of the aesthetic, music, and combat.

As far as plot and characters go I literally could not tell you a single thing from start to finish other than the names of the party members and that there's an Afro Chocobo.

I thought the final boss was moms.

They're pretty tough.

I remember Barthandalus, Jihl Nabaat, Orphan...do I need to know more than that?

Yes I remembered both names. Though I can only hear "Barthandelus!" in Lightning's voice when she calls it out in battle. And Snow said Dysley a lot iirc.

XIII's villains are a weak point for sure, but then I'm not a fan of most FF villains. I don't like Seph or Kefka either! At least Bart has a cool hammy 'I am obviously evil' voice.

okay i did remember the name of the main villain but this name i had to look up because i had literally 0 recollection of it, nor of anyone in the story who even fit the role you described

I'll never forget Rosch's name because I lost to him a bunch of times and I can still hear Snow saying "don't do it Rosch!" at the start of every battle

That was Jihl Nabaat. They brought her back as a coliseum fight in XIII-2 and could join your party from there.

That scene where he kill Jihl and reveals his true form plays out like its supposed to be some kind of twist, but the game doesnt spend any time pretending this dude is good. youre literally fighting the government from the very beginning of the game and Dysley just looks and sounds like a bad guy.
Its like (20 year old FFX spoilers) finding out the Yevon religion is corrupt, but without any of the time spent establishing the religion as a non nefarious entity

its literally the first time you meet this guy in person, and hes like ha ha, I am not really this guy, I am another guy! ok, I barely knew the guy you were pretending to be anyway, what was the point of this charade?

I wouldnt want to start over at this point but I have considered the idea of attempting to finish where I left off.

Bartys the last boss of that chapter so youd only have a few hours to go after that.

I think the main reason I haven't continued at this point is that I likely won't remember how the combat system works with the different roles. And I remember Barthandelus being a pain with some auto-kill move.

Assuming you're pretty well maxed on the crystarium, here's a chunk from the guide I used when I 100%ed the game (twice, once each on 360 and PS3):

Battle 21: Barthandelus (BOSS). This guy is a walk in the park compared to the
last time you fought him, mostly because you're so much stronger. I just used
the lazy approach with Fang, Hope and Lightning, and I still beat the target
time with 2 minutes or so to spare. If you want to go faster, start in
SAB/SYN/MED and stick him with DeShell and DeProtect. Then, COM/RAV/RAV to
stagger, COM/RAV/COM to attack, and COM/MED/MED to heal. He only has one
attack that you should be scared of: Thanatosian Laughter, which will take all
3 characters down by about half. Fortunately, the charge time for this is more
than enough to switch to your healers and absorb the damage. If he takes his
debuffs off, go back to SAB/SYN/MED and put them back on, and you'll be out of
there with barely a scratch!

I'll keep that saved and look into it if I do end up giving it another shot. Thanks!
