Let's ignore the question of 'how' (feel free to write in your own), but all government has broken down, lawlessness rules the land, people are all on their own, and there's no hope of a government re-establishing itself within at least a year or two. And this isn't just your area either but world-wide. What do you do? Do you think you'll survive?

I guess I'd do whatever the fuck I want, because there'd be nobody to stop me?

In the case of a complete societal breakdown without an existing contingency (well-stocked cabin or bunker), step one would involve trying to get my hands on as many weapons as possible, step two would be quickly recruiting people who would use those weapons on my behalf, and step three would trying to grab as many resources as possible. If I can get the weapons and the resources, everybody has to play ball. And then I'd start to focus on aggressive expansion to head off would-be challengers from other areas.

Finally, I'd establish a dynasty that would last a thousand years.

Just because there is no government doesn't mean everything would be lawlessness. People are a lot more capable of making their own decisions than you think. They are just so brainwashed into thinking you need a bunch of old millionaires in suits telling you what to do and how to spend your money.

Community and shared responsibilities is what you need.

If a government doesn't reestablish itself within a year or two, it probably isn't going to reestablish itself ever.

Something may eventually come rising out of the ashes on the other side, but it isn't likely to be the same thing that fell apart. It's also likely to be much more draconian and authoritarian, at least at first, because civil rights kind of stop being a concern for most people when you're fighting over scraps. And clawing order back out of chaos takes a lot of harsh decisions.

When I was in my 20s, I would have tried to make a go of things.

Now that I'm in my 40s, I'd pretty much just lay down and die.

This.

Like I've said in another topic recently, I've basically been an old man since I was 12.

Also, when you start posting on a forum where pretty much everyone is either a teenager or in their early 20s at most, everyone's going to treat the people in their late 20s/early 30s like they're ancient. And it doesn't help that as a child of the 80s surrounded by children of the 90s (and occasionally 00s), I tended to play it up a bit. And pointing out stuff like how I'm old enough to be Shadow's dad doesn't help either.

But yeah, I'm 44 (45 in a couple months).

Now? Probably.

I think we used to have a couple older people here (at least one or two really old), and I know Whiskey was pretty close to my age, but I'm pretty sure nearly all of them are gone now. I think now it's almost entirely mid-to-late 20somethings and early 30somethings here now, apart from the rare exception like you or I.

I'm sure there are plenty of real-life examples of modern failed states you can point to where chronic insecurity, violence, and militia rule didn't become an everyday fact of life for many people after the collapse of the government, thus proving that society is far more likely to spontaneously reorganize itself into peaceful communes.

I actually coded 3 video games in the 70's using an apple II C computer at my school (which I learned to code basic on via a program called Logo).

They were simple games but fun.

I am familiar with what local plants are edible and which are poisonous. There's plenty of edible weeds and trees around here such as dandelion, burdock, plantain, mulberries, eastern juniper, prairie rose, and pineapple weed. But some edible plants can be trouble in large quantities, such as dock and sorrel, which are high in oxalic acid and can cause kidney stones, and others can become toxic if they have started to mold, such as clovers which can become infected with a mold that produces dicoumarol, an anti-clotting agent. And then there are nettles which are highly nutritious but have a nasty sting which can be destroyed by cooking or drying; it's also unsafe to eat once it flowers because it develops cystoliths that may cause kidney stones.

There's also some deadly poisonous plants like poison hemlock (which looks similar to wild carrot) and black nightshade (which has tasty looking black berries). Most of the other toxic plants around here like buffalobur have sharp needles or spines and wouldn't be edible even if they weren't toxic.

And there are plants that are poisonous unless they're cooked correctly or only certain parts are edible, such as elderberries and choke cherries (the flowers & berries are edible if cooked, the rest of the plant contains cyanide!), ground cherries (the fruits are edible raw or cooked, the rest is poison) and poke (the young leaves & stems are edible if boiled in several changes of water, raw plant material, any part that's older or turned red, and the berries and roots are deadly poison).

I'd get to my parents place as soon as possible. They have about 20 acres in a remote area with a freshwater well, a garden, lots of trees to use for firewood, and multiple guns for hunting/ protection. That would probably be the best option for where to hold up for a while.
