My father was a police lieutenant in my hometown. He was the first to say never to trust the police in most circumstances.

I think in most situations I would trust them.

If I see them just out in public not actively engaging in anything (in line in a fast food restaurant, etc.), I wouldn't trust them any less than anyone else in line. Honestly, I would probably trust them more.

If I required their services for something (got in car accident, something got stolen from my home, etc.), I would trust them.

If I were on the engaged side (pulled over for speeding, arrested for some reason), I would probably trust them less lol.

Option 2. My brother in law is a cop.

I trust my sisters opinion on things. He hasn't done anything stupid.

Normal people will just stab or rob you at most, maybe some will kill or rape you but they have to be sneaky about it. Cops will rob you then legally kidnap you for as long as they want. They can kill you if they want. They can destroy your life if they want. And they don't have to be sneaky about it either. A normal person would have to strong arm you to take you somewhere else sketch to do whatever to you but a cop can just demand that you go with them and you have to do it because you'll be the one in trouble if you don't. There's about a 60% chance a normal person will get some consequence for it (80% if they're a racial minority) but only about a 20% chance that a cop will get some consequence for their actions to you.

I trust cops to use physical force when I need them to give someone the boot.

I don't trust cops to use their own judgment in any situation.

they might not fuck you over in any given interaction, but the power they wield is too unaccountable to trust them not to

I figure anyone who makes the conscious decision to become a police officer is probably a bit of a shitty person at the very least.
