Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind complete!

Overall, I'd say I preferred this one to The Missing Heir. The mystery was more suspenseful and less cliched and predictable. I think this was a more likable cast overall, too.

Both games are kind of difficult to play, even with the updated remakes, because the gameplay is very trial and error, and it's super easy to get stuck trying to figure out what exactly the game wants you to do in this particular situation. It felt like The Girl Who Stands Behind had less of that, but it might just be because I knew to expect it after the first game.

I'd still recommend them if you're a VN fan, especially if you like the murder mystery variety, but they're certainly not top tier for the genre.

You should! It rules. I've been going through Kirby Star Allies with a friend, which is pretty solid, but feels like a step down from Return to Dreamland (the last Kirby game we played together).

Well, I think we were on the last bonus level, but then Mass Effect Trilogy came out and we moved over to that (and never finished that either! Another thing we need to get back to).

Kirby Star Allies was...fine. Just felt like it was lacking in content.

One of my favorite running gags of the third week was Beat freaking out every time someone tries to use his real name, so I'm glad they've kept that for the anime.

Dragon Ball Z Episode 166 complete!

so they're still rolling with this "I don't care if the world is in danger Gohan is going to STUDY" shtick from Chichi huh

also it was nice to relive the Martial Arts Tournaments from Dragon Ball, especially Goku losing to Tien because he literally got hit by a car

Another casualty to the anime. (Although she has like 0 appearances in the manga so I don't know what chichi fans would prefer)

Tales of Arise beated.

Pretty good Tales of game but not in the top tier of the greats. It kinda loses its momentum towards the end and stumbles - this is true both story and gameplay but it's the gameplay that currently irks me more if only because I started the postgame. The AI is just criminally dumb. Casters need to stay back. Period. There's even a strategy order called "Keep distance from the enemy" that I automatically applied to every strategy to be followed at all times and still they are compelled to cast in melee range. Even turning off their non-spell artes doesn't really improve it much. This still would be surmountable if not for the other part of this which is that the game just throws its hands in the air and turns everything into giant stat blocks in the endgame so everything is an HP sponge that can hit like trucks. This is okay when I'm controlling a character because I usually know what I'm doing and can dodge competently. Less okay for the AI.

Still though, fun game, okay cast but not the savior of Tales because that was Berseria which was literally the game preceding it. Probably 5th best Tales behind Abyss, Berseria, Xillia 2, and Graces f. Alphen is a weak lead though.

The Expanse Season 6 complete!

And that's why Holden is the best. Really strong finale, and you can see what they're setting up, assuming they eventually do make movies to cover the final trilogy.

I wish the season hadn't been so short because you didn't get as many big character moments, but the non-stop action kept me hooked.

Good finale. I do think that Drummer and the Belt got shafted in the battle though. Basically they were just there to act was warm bodies to make up the third group because they got completely blasted and ultimately whether they won, lost, or by how much either way was completely irrelevant to the outcome because even if Inaros's fleet made it to the Ring at full strength they just end up getting eaten up because of the Roci's actions so that kinda sucked. Like they got a bone thrown to them in the aftermath when Holden resigned immediately to put Drummer in charge of the new Union but still.

Also I imagine this was explained better in the book, if the battle even went down like this at all there, but not sure how the Roci plan even worked. So, triggering the Ring Entities, I get. But Avasalrala explicitly notes it isn't just Inaros and the Pella that will make it to the Ring, but that he's still got a chunk of his fleet. I know they were flying in a kinda close formation there but given the emphasis on timing all this out so Inaros couldn't hit the brakes when he realized what was happening and inertia would doom him to be carried into the Ring Entities... like wouldn't the rest of his fleet both have the time to veer off and/or miss the timing and therefore enter Ring Space safely? It's like the Pella gets eaten and the rest of Inaros's ships were ignored lol. Also I know the UNN and Mars couldn't catch them in time for the Ring but were they really so behind that they couldn't catch up before Inaros could repair the railguns? Because as long as those were down I think Inaros still loses? I'm more forgiving on that though because the distances/timescale isn't clear. Amos said they'd need weeks to repair it but Inaros would have way more resources and manpower so maybe they could have gotten them back online way faster and in time.

Also kinda weird to leave the Laconia stuff where they did! I still have questions!

But yeah, good finale, good show.

It's a little different in the book. Inaros should have no clue about the threshold that triggers ships disappearing because Naomi is the one who figured it out, and in the book, he just leads his fleet through the ring and they all disappear without realizing what happened.

okay the forest at night sidequest in Ys VIII is awful

they disabled quick travel so you have walk all the way back to the camp after beating the quest monsters in a forest with a bunch of OP monsters where it's easy to fall off the sides

there has to be easier healing than what I have access to right now so it makes me wonder if I've missed something or if they really expect me to keep eating fruit and refilling potion bottles the entire game

I dunno, the potions are pretty generous as is. I'm not sure I understand the issue. Are you just tanking all the damage?

I mean I'm not great at the timing for flash guarding and stuff yet so I feel like I'm always running low on healing and it's not like the fruits heal that much HP

Plus I only have one recipe right now and it seems like I should've found at least one more by now

I dunno, maybe I'm just allocating my resources poorly

One last dick move from my departing roommate: instead of leaving his keys in the apartment like I asked him to (Im out of town at the moment, and new roommates were moving in; I separately arranged for the other set of keys to get to one of the new roommates), he apparently left his keys with a friend, made no arrangements to get the keys to my new roommates, and has yet to give us the contact info of this friend

Really wish my new roommate hadnt already paid him his portion of the security deposit... I would feel totally justified in saying that he still owed me rent until the keys are returned

As mentioned, I finished the main story a few days ago, but now I'm officially done with the postgame and platinum (since the way I play it was basically just "do the postgame" at that point.) Thoughts remain largely unchanged from before.

Uh quick rankings that I didn't include in that post I think I guess.

Characters: Rinwell > Dohalim > Shionne > Law > Alphen > Kisara

Alphen still a pretty boring/lame lead. Everyone above him is good, though Rinwell and Dohalim are the clear Top 2 IMO. Villains pretty weak as a whole. Red Woman was pretty hype before the reveal. I mean, the reveal is pretty neat but also killed that particular hype! I mean, they're hate-able and all but also really one dimensional in that regard.

Tales Rankings: Abyss > Berseria >= Xillia 2 > Graces f > Arise > Symphonia > Vesperia > Xillia > Symphonia 2 > Zestiria.

Basically as expected and where I think I had it after the main story anyway. Abyss/Berseria/Xillia 2 trio continues to reign supreme. Graces f continues to ride on the sublime combat system. Arise is probably closer to that group than the Symphonia/Vesperia/Xillia/Symphonia 2 quartet. zestiria go home you didn't deserve edna send her to berseria.

Next up I will probably see if Library of Ruina causes my potato computer to melt. Processor doesn't meet min reqs but like I'm fine on RAM and such so we'll see what happens. please work out okay.

Playing some Ys VIII now that Bucs/Eagles is out of hand while I wait for Cowboys/Niners to start.

We get some good background info on Laxia, and now we have a really cool twist of a serial killer being one of the survivors from the Lombardia. Now the question is if it's someone I've already met, and if it's one of the members of the village or someone from the very beginning of the game.

All right, finished Chapter 2 of Ys VIII! I wasn't expecting them to kill off people for real after how death averse the Trails series is! I definitely wasn't ready for them to kill off Captain Barbaros so early. That was a big twist. I almost kind of wish Kiergaard had stuck around as a rival/foil to Adol, but I also get why they had to resolve that plot point quickly.

Oh hey, now we get to play as the fabled Dana.

I don't want to say being a Cowboys fan is torture because I'm old enough to remember them winning three Super Bowls, but man, they find the most painful ways to lose imaginable and then I have to deal with the entire internet laughing at them to boot...!

I think the Lions have them beat in painful ways to lose, but the Cowboys tend to do it in actual meaningful games or the playoffs so it just feels worse because of the stakes.

That entire 4th quarter was a trainwreck on both sides though.
