Final Fantasy (name) Final Fantasy VII Aerith dies Blue Magic Spheres 8-Bit Theater Final Fantasy Tactics Auron Nobuo Uematsu Final Fantasy X Music Ramza Beoulve Delita Hyral Old Man Party Members Tifa Calculator/Mathematician Yuna's opinion on your plan Squall Midgar This is the way Final Fantasy VI Spell Suffixes Summon (Command) Tifa/Scarlet Slap Fight Tonberries Desperation Attacks Aerith Chocobos Algus/Miluda at Thieve's Fort Malboro Terra: Terra easily wins the dubious "best female protagonist in the series" award. I like how Terra wants to learn more about love, and her quest succeeds when she learns about maternal love instead of erotic. That's all fine and interesting. What I kind of find more interesting about her is that you'd think her quest would be either one of "oh no all the evil things I did while mind controlled" or "I need to search for a new identity now that I have amnesia, sure hope my old mind controlled personality doesn't come back up and make me turn evil." Instead, none of that happens. Terra is just like "yeah, the rebels seem cool," joins them, and her only introspection is about her emotions. She's never even particularly angry that her father turns into a crystal and teaches Setzer the mid-level elemental magic once I equip him because there's nothing else Setzer is good for. She's definitely the chillest protagonist in the series, and I say this knowing that at one point she freaks out, turns into a flying monster, and takes refuge in fantasy Detroit. IV's Rotating Party Hinonobu Sakaguchi Opera Scene Kilika Sending Scene Omnislash Suplexing a Train Blitzbomb Laguna: After this was nominated, I wanted to listen to Laguna's kickass theme, but I live nearish to Laguna Beach, so unlike every other character I typed in similar things for, "Laguna music" kept giving me Laguna Beach Music Festival results. Anyway, Laguna is good. I appreciate his party mixing things up for the audience every so often. It's interesting how Laguna, a temporary party member, is the third most important party member (maybe fourth, after Edea) and honestly gets more development than anyone else in the game besides Squall. I like how he tries to stop the sorceress by just freezing her. That's one of the most interesting and memorable things in FFVIII to me, is how they try to stop the sorceress. Your instinct is that they'd need a mystical solution, but instead they're just like "lol let's cryogenically freeze her and shoot her into space." Anyway, Laguna, quality guy. Is he the best main character dad in the series? Hm... Dorgann, Maduin, Laguna, Jecht... I guess Dorgann wins by virtue of being the only one who's actually around for his son without emotionally traumatizing him, though Maduin wins points for trying. I don't know anything about music, so I can't explain why it's good. What I can say is that it's used in 1-6 and 9. And yet... I don't know if this is a controversial opinion, but I'm just going to say it: 7, 8, and 10 have the best battle themes, and they're the ones that don't use it. Why this is, I don't know, but I'm saying it. I would say it's a clean sweep for the non-users, but XIII has a bad theme, and FFX-2 has the actual worst in the series if you count it as mainline. I will allow it under certain very specific circumstances, but the most steampunky you are, the less I like you. I understand its value in a fantasy context as the lowest level of technology that still registers to the modern eye as proper technology (as opposed to something like 1700s technology, which obviously is still technology, but lacks gears, steam, electricity, etc) and yet isn't SO advanced that it renders preindustrial technology useless in a war or adventuring context (imagine a medieval fantasy army up against WWII technology, for instance). Lindblum is going for that medieval-meets-industrial-with-some-magitech era look, and it's fine. I appreciate that its backgrounds have a lot of houses you can't visit in order to imply how large the city is, but I'm not that interested in it. What even is the biggest and most populated city in Final Fantasy? Is it Cocoon? Under Square-Enix, we get a much slower drip of games that are of a lower quality. And stop it with the cheapo chibi games, god! I cannot think of a single non-Nintendo JRPG where the main character has a dedicated main weapon type, and it isn't a sword, fists, or gun. And even for the last two, it's just the Xeno series and Wild Arms. Even in WRPGs where you can ostensibly use whatever, I still usualyl specialize in swords because you can depend on swords being a viable weapon type, whereas who knows if there will be useful spears, daggers, and so on. Baldur's Gate II gives you an 'ultimate' weapon for everything except clubs, because I guess clubs just aren't cool enough. And don't you dare claim that Zidane's gigantic daggers don't count as swords, he uses "thief swords" anyway. FF has some of the best and worst swords in the business, and they're so popular that I think every game with dedicated main characters has at least two sword party members. Let's see: FFII (Firion/Maria), FFIV (Cecil/Edge), FFV (Bartz/Faris), FFVI (Many), FFVII (Cloud/Sephiroth), FFVIII (Squall/Seifer), FFIX (Zidane/Steiner), FFX (Tidus/Auron), FFXII (Vaan/Basch), FFXIII (Lightning), FFXV (Noctis/Gladiolus).
