STILL a great movie!

Decided to watch the trilogy and the Animatrix before the new one comes out. Haven't seen the first 2 in years. Only saw the 3rd once in theaters, despite owning it on DVD. I think I've seen part of the Animatrix but never the whole thing.

Anyway, the first movie is still awesome. Filled with so many iconic scenes and lines and shots/cinematography. It's kind of ridiculous, but it's easy to forget the outsized influence this had on pop culture and all those games and movies we all grew up with. Yes, some of the effects are a little dated but it still holds up pretty well.

I've only seen it once and it was years after the release. It was awesome then.

Glad it's still awesome now.

The Matrix is quite possibly my favourite movie ever. It's a real shame what they did with the sequels, and the new movie coming out soon looks like it will be an absolute tire fire, but the best thing about the Matrix is you can watch the first movie as a self-contained story, and pretend that none of the sequels ever happened

Just watched Reloaded. It's...fine but nothing more.

  • The CG is not so great at certain points. It looks like a video game, especially during the big Agent Smith fight.
  • The Zion orgy scene is still awful.
  • The whole Merovingian part up through the highway chase is the best part. On this rewatch I just couldn't understand how the twins never managed to take out the front or side glass of Trinity's car when they fired like a thousand bullets.
  • I can't think of the Architect scene without thinking of the MTV parody: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5OfG_wxkJI

Reloaded great movie. The Zion stuff isn't good (which is also true in the third movie, where it's over half the movie...) but everything else is a ton of fun. The freeway sequence is the best car chase in any movie and the action is generally fantastic.

Not entirely related but I watched Speed for the first time in years last month and the whole movie felt like a practical joke being played on Keanu Reeves. Such a ridiculous movie with a hammy villain and Keanu reacts nonchalantly until he suddenly loses it towards the end. I loved it! Reeves was well-cast in movies like Speed and The Matrix. Good that he has gone through a memetic resurgence in popularity lately. He was supposed to play Jude Law's character in Captain Marvel but he had scheduling conflicts with John Wick 3. I think Law is a better actor but Reeves might have fit that role better.

In hindsight Reeves' stoicness in Speed reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance in Predator where he's a stoic warrior for the most part and that increases the impact of whenever he shows outrage (in that movie when Dutch gets mad at Dillon for sacrificing his friend Jim Hopper).

i may watch the second again but have no real interest in ever rewatching the third

first is definitely one of my top movies ever though. one of those movies where every single line feels iconic due to how much i've run it over/quoted it in my mind.

i will say there are hints at the end of the movie about the real world parts of the sequels sucking, though. bit tedious to watch through the robots with tentacles sequences.

Not gonna lie, I love Matrix Revolutions. I know a lot of people don't, but I could rewatch that movie any time and I love how it ended. Again, just my opinion.

Watched The Animatrix last night. I'd never seen it before, at least in full. The first couple of stories give the background on how the Matrix happened. A few are loosely connected to the main Matrix movies, while the rest are completed disconnected and simply give more flavor to the universe.

I thought it was pretty good, though a little hit or miss at points either in terms of story or animation style (which differs). I tend to like short stories though as they let creators get weird and creative and there's an implicit agreement that everything doesn't need to be fully explained and fleshed out.

Aaaand finished with Revolutions last night!

It's better than I remembered. Not necessarily great but a fine enough ending to the trilogy.

I thought it was really fun watching the new Oracle actress try to copy the mannerisms of the old one (the original died between the shooting of the last 2 films). Same thing with Smith, and his voice cadences, onboard the ship.

The battle for Zion was definitely a little hokey at points but it's still the highlight of the movie. I don't know if it was just watching it in 4K HDR but it still looks pretty damn good. When the swarms start coming in...yeah, it's pretty awesome.

The Neo parts were probably the worst stuff. I totally forgot about him going blind, but I guess that's the savior trope. That final battle against Smith was only okay. Visually it was much better than the mob fight in Reloaded; plus some of the cinematography was neat. But it just wasn't crazy and "over the top" enough for the DBZ/anime fight that it wanted to be.

So yeah, this rewatch didn't change my opinions too much. The first is a classic that stands on it's own. Everything else is fine but ultimately superfluous.

Guess I'm ready for Resurrections!
