If we're going to talk about punching up and down in terms of power structures and discriminated people in American society, I'll note a sentence Chappelle said in The Closer I might be paraphrasing: "my problem is with white people."

On one hand, that can get into -phobias and -isms conversations like we've been having here already, right -- that sentence alone reads as discriminatory, and his general career could arguably support that notion. Pair that up with this conversation we've been having, and that becomes a trend and a narrative.

Also though, in this up/down perspective, Dave may have been intending to punch up in that way. I don't think he made the case cohesive and strong or even always fair, but there were themes of him tying the LGBTQ community to white people and that could be seen more as punching up.

I dunno if that latter angle is accurate for Chappelle's intentions. I do think he has an interest in punching up, activism, and changing power structures...but just because you punch up doesn't mean you can't also punch down.

There's definitely some thinly veiled ignorance going on there. In the special he immediately talks about Caitlyn Jenner and how she's a great person, when it doesn't exactly take research to know that most of the trans community can't stand her and how she's treated as the face of the community because she very specifically isn't a good person. He also hugely oversimplifies the community's issues with JK Rowling, which suggests that either he's intentionally lying or misportraying the situation to back his side, or he actually doesn't know shit about the situation beyond a twitter trending headline and is just trying to speak on a situation he doesn't understand at all.

The fact he refers to himself as a feminist is wild and frankly impressive for a male comedian (even if he follows it up with a lazy d*** joke) so it's hard to give him the benefit of the doubt and think he's just ignorant, especially since he's already made trans jokes part of his sets for the last few years

actually hold up isn't he the guy who had an extended bit about how trans people struggle to get respect even from other LGBTQ+ people? If he's coming at trans folks specifically, (again, leaving open the option that I'm misunderstanding something since I've not seen what we're talking about) I have a hard time buying the "he is trying to punch up" defense.

All this controversy both makes me laugh, and makes me incredibly sad. The laughter is because of the hilarious double standards on display here, coupled with the "woke culture" Twitter morons viciously fighting to see which arbitrary grouping of people is higher on the "victim scale". The sadness is because there was nothing vicious or out of line in his jokes, they were funny and they pointed out a really embarassing facet of how society behaves, and I think things like that video of the Netflix protest yesterday are proof that Dave was not wrong.

We have to get out of this mindset that every single person belonging to a "group" has had the same experience. People should be judged on their individual merits rather than by what "boxes" they tick. In terms of the "punching down" comment, comedy is about pointing out the absurdity in a situation, regardless of any other mitigating factors. When someone does something really dumb or embarassing, that is the root of comedy, and that's the beauty of comedy, you can find humour in powerful politicians saying something dumb, and you can find humour in how poor people dress when they are shopping at Wal Mart. Comedy is the great equalizer, and to try and censor jokes based on arbitrary classifications is a great way to kill all humour. If everyone is afraid to make a joke because someone might find it "offensive" and start a Twitter cancel culture campaign against them, we are going to lose a lot more than we would gain.

Just watched it yesterday and I agree. The last 20 minutes were powerful, and Daphne's tragic end emphasizes what Chappelle was trying to say about groups hypocritically valuing agenda over individuals (or anything else for that matter).

and the bit where he said she killed herself like a man

you really get the sense that he cared about her enough to speak for what she would want and extend that to all trans people

and comparing trans women to blackface and calling himself a terf really reinforces how much he's cool with us

that's the ending part that everybody keeps saying to watch, right? the part that paints him in a *good* light?
