Actually, I think The Simpsons, South Park's closest contemporary, is DECIDEDLY ANYTHING BUT THIS, at least during its golden years. The Simpsons has always had cynical takes but they're always couched in a deep level of optimism, empathy, and respect for others, which is the magic ingredient that I think South Park is sorely lacking. I don't think The Simpsons is even remotely 'enlightened centrist.'

Simpsons is totally enlightened centrist and a staple of anti-nuclear propaganda. In terms of impacting climate change it's arguably worse than South Park.

I wasn't a big Simpsons person when I grew up, but the anti-nuclear thing from what I saw always felt more incidental to me. Like it just happened to be a shitty job where Homer worked because all jobs at that level are shitty, and the setting just happened to have a lot of potential for comedy. South Park makes specific episodes all about a specific social issue. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Nah, I do agree that Simpsons has been a problem for nuclear energy. The way they depict it is just cartoonishly evil, and instead of it all being on Mr. Burns they make the very idea of nuclear energy look bad, with huge smokestacks and nuclear waste just being dumped into rivers, which really isn't what nuclear energy looks like at all. It's a known thing that nuclear energy advocates have been hurt by the Simpsons since the 90's.

No, theyre right, The Simpsons is decidedly anti-nuclear energy

It would be one thing if it was just the Springfield Nuclear Power Plants problems are just a reflection on Mr Burns psychopathic capitalism and not a statement on the general safety of nuclear energy but thats not really it. There is never any counter example of a responsible nuclear power plant.

Burns owns a nuclear power plant BECAUSE hes evil and its an evil power source.

Homer's job is actually pretty great. Union, not physically demanding, plenty of breaks. Hell he takes plenty of time off and never gets much of a reprimand. Hell he even gets a holiday bonus.

you don't need to, just saying that a) you're not superior to me by default just because you refuse to take a side and b) i'm not a braindead idiot because i do take a side.

also, like moogle said, just because you take a side doesn't mean you don't acknowledge that there are issues with your side. i identify as a socialist, because i think socialism is better than all other political ideologies. that doesn't mean i agree with all socialist stances, nor does it mean i disagree with all right-wing stances. but i'm not going to say "i'm a centrist because i don't think socialism is 100% perfect."

It's really unfortunate but it's almost understandable. When the show started it had only been 3 years since Chernobyl and 10 since Three Mile Island. Concern about irresponsibly-run nuclear power plants was very much a thing in the public consciousness, independent of any media, and the show was just tapping into that.

At some point though the show did become the main driving force behind that sentiment rather than just commenting on something that already existed, and they should have changed it a long time ago.

I've never actually seen people who identify as a "socialist" on the internet explain just what it is about socialism that makes it preferable to capitalism. I have also never seen an actual defense of the fact that every time socialism is attempted it fails miserably and results in millions of deaths.

considering that the socialists you are referring to don't consider what you and BT refer to as "socialism" to be socialism, referring to them as "socialists" kind of indicates that the rebranding has been successful and that the names of the philosophies have changed

it's not so much a defense as pointing out that you're arguing against something i'm not defending. obviously, i'm not advocating for the kind of "socialism" marx was in favor of. really not sure why you're going with this obtuse line of attack. after literal years of arguing with me in the freedom topic (including several debates about the distinction between socialism and communism), you should be well aware that my stance is not "oh yeah marx was totally on point."
