you should consider getting a flu shot to help out all the vulnerable people out there who the flu would kill

around half of all people who contract the flu never develop any symptoms but can still spread it to others

Your natural immune system is still fighting the bug if you've been vaccinated. All the vaccine does is give it the experience needed to do so more efficiently before it has an actual infection.

Why do so many people have no comprehension of how vaccines work?

because every level of public health in the US has been devalued and defunded(including basic education) like so many other things in an effort to keep the wealthiest people from being taxed fairly

people are so uneducated that they are deciding what is and is not true instead of pursuing curiosity and trying to find out what the truth is by simply learning more about it. A lot of them just embrace what is convenient for themselves and build up their reasoning around that shaky foundation.

I also think the 24 hour news cycle has made people have more of a distrust of media, once people stop believing the news media and instead get their information from sites like Facebook you get this bullshit.

Seems like the average person now thinks that Facebook is a more trustworthy news source than the NY Times or something.

It really varies from person to person. Some people will have a sore arm or have a slight fever or achyness while their immune system responds to the vaccine, normally doesnt last longer than a day. Some people dont suffer adverse effects at all and then there are rare cases of people having allergic reactions. Those can be life threatening sometimes so its nothing to dismiss but any place that gives vaccines are required to know how to respond if that does happen.

A lot of people claim they got the flu after getting the shot but theres no evidence that you can contract the flu that way. What is more likely is that people who say that are already reluctant to get the shot so the few times that they do get it, its pretty late into flu season and theyve already contracted the virus but arent feeling the symptoms yet.

Efficacy varies, but to my knowledge, there has never been a flu vaccine that didn't provide enough protection to be at least beneficial enough to offset the statistical risks.

SilentSeph posted...

It's not uncommon. A lot of people mistake it for catching the flu from the vaccine, but it's actually just the immune system responding to the vaccine.

This. I already mask at all times when I'm near other people or could end up interacting with people. And I'm not afraid to call off from work if I'm sick. And as of right now I live alone (if I didn't that obviously changes things). Isolation is very close to my norm so it means nothing to me, don't give AF if people think that's sad or pathetic or not that's reality for a lot of people.

Even then I'm considering getting it, but the chances of me spreading it to anyone that would be strongly affected by it must be approaching 0%.

I'll get the flu shot this year, the same as always, since my daughter's autoimmune compromised and my husband works in the health care field. I know of one person who, before he retired, never got his flu shot and became sick every year after he visited Las Vegas for their annual show (he worked in the auto parts field). The last year that he worked, he decided to get a flu shot before he went to Las Vegas; it was the first year that he came home without feeling sick. Get your flu shot.

Yes, it is anecdotal evidence, but it has been my life experience. If I start getting the flu, I'll start worrying about the shot.

Alternate perspective: you having the flu after getting the vaccine could mean that you owe your life to the vaccine.

Pretty much. Some years are better than others, but the risk is so minimal that whatever potential a given year's vaccine has to save lives handily outweighs it.
