28 y/o Afghan Refugee, Hamed Ahmadi is branded UNGRATEFUL by conservative twitter users after he shared a photo of his meager food ration he was given at Fort Bliss which has divided the internet!!

People supported him for his disappointing meal as they branded it "pathetic" to be only feeding that much to the new refugees at a military base that is housing 4000 people. They were not impressed by what they are feeding the refugees as nothing but a sliver of food..

But conservatives were not so kind who branded him ungrateful and said they would be happy to fly him out of the US again and back to his country where he gets no free food at all as others called him a complainer who should be grateful that he is now on "safe" land and not the "hellhole" back in afghanistan.

Others noticed he was using an iphone to tweet a photo of his meager meal and he should sell it to buy beter food as one said "Guy is getting free meals without threat of being slaughtered by the Taliban, meh, meals could be better"

A woman wrote "You are complaining and you're receiving more than a lot of american citizens. Please stop"

While it's certainly not a lot of food, I kinda imagine they're dealing with shortages given that there was almost no planning or foresight to the evacuation.

The US has a massive issue with food waste/food loss. Roughly a third of all food generated in the US goes uneaten. There's no good reason resources couldn't have been found to feed these refugees.

Like Zeus said, I'm sure they weren't as prepared to take on these refugees as they could have been. Better foresight and planning could've prevented this. Hopefully those in charge can address this, and swiftly. No reason they shouldn't be provided three nutritionally complete meals a day, at a minimum.

That asshole saying they'd buy the dude a plane ticket back to Afghanistan should try going hungry and see how they like it. For the dude who complained, think of how many are going underfed and of how long this could have continued if no one said anything. Hunger and malnutrition can have a devestating effect on long-term health, particularly in children.

Can't stand how fucking callous and ignorant some people are. As a veteran, I'm all for people seeking a better life here, and I'm ashamed that their first impressions of our country include assholes like that busting the dude's balls just for trying to eat. America is better than that asshole, and I hope more people learn a little fucking compassion and understanding.

Also agree. Canada is culprit of this way too often. Donate $2B to Mumbai for a low-income housing project, meanwhile we need housing here. Doesnt take triple-digit IQ to figure that one out.

Yeah, I'd have a lot more sympathy for the "we should help our own first" people if they didn't actually mean "I'm content with the current state of our most disenfranchised people, I just want refugees to have it even worse than them."

This mentality is incredibly common, but it grossly overstates just how much of a luxury owning a smartphone is, and is largely a holdover from an era when consumer electronics were seen as a sign of great wealth. Even if you're buying a brand new iPhone of the latest model, that's less than a month's rent for many people, as a one-time expense that generally lasts for 3-4 years. If you don't go for the most expensive available, you can easily find an older one for under $200, or possibly even get yourself into a basic plan that includes the phone effectively for free. That's really not a major expense in the grand scheme of living expenses, and in exchange, you get:

• The ability to communicate with friends and family via the internet (both locally and wherever home was)
• On-demand translation services
• Maps
• Email
• Access to resources to help navigate the services available to refugees (many of which are in one's native language)
• Access to news, particularly of what's going on back home
• Banking, particularly sorting out whatever needs to happen to access the resources they had at home in their new country
• Entertainment (which, as much as people like to scoff at this, is really good to have when you're in such a miserable situation)

Toss in a cheap basic or pay-as-you-go plan, and you also get:

• A phone number at which case workers, potential employers, schools, and any other important entities can reach you (arguably a prerequisite to get a job)
• The ability to communicate (at least locally) with friends, family, employers, and anyone else without needing to find internet access

Coming from a position where most of us added smartphones to our existing suite of devices and services, they seem like they're just a nice convenience to have, but don't do anything that you can't cover with other devices. Starting from nothing, however, a smart phone is one of the most cost-effective quality of life improvements you can possibly get, arguably even better than shelter (given a choice between buying a smartphone and paying for one more month of rent, you're actually going to be better off becoming immediately homeless with the phone than homeless without it in a month) and definitively second only to food.

Quite simply, owning a smartphone does not mean somebody isn't poor, nor does it mean they've foolishly wasted their limited funds on it. Getting a smartphone should actually be among their first priorities, if they're really starting from nothing.

On top of that, whatever wealth these people might have come from, they left almost all of it behind. You can't stick a house in your pocket. Nor a car. Nor a TV. These people fled with the clothes on their backs and whatever they can fit in their pockets, and that latter part pretty much means a wallet, a passport, and a phone. Having a phone doesn't mean somebody hasn't lost pretty much everything, it just means their phone fit in their pocket.
