In your mind, what time do you think the event now takes place?

Just a friendly debate with my wife that I have decided to pose to B8. Hopefully the topic title isn't too confusing due to the character limit!

I take moving it back an hour to be like, pushing it back further away from now. As opposed to bringing it forward an hour, closer to the present. So 8 I guess.

If the event started at 7 it started at 7. The wording of means they moved it back from 6 to 7. At least thats how I interpret the topic title.

Moving it back, as in away from you. On a timeline, that means later.

Moving it forward, towards you. That would mean earlier

I wanted to put "originally started at 7," but I couldn't find a way to get that to fit in the topic title, so I apologize for the confusion.

I voted 6 because you say it started, past tense, at 7. Meaning it was intended for 6 and pushed back an hour to 7pm.

It depends if this is being said after the event started or before.

If after, then 7 is the correct answer. If before, then the event should start at 8.

It's either 6 to 7, if the announcement was made in advance, and then the event literally began at 7.

Or it's 7 to 8, if the event was scheduled for seven, and then moved back an hour to 8.

I'm weird so I voted the first option. I totally get why everyone says the second, but in my mind, I would say I'm moving an event "forward" an hour if I'm making it later, and "back" an hour if I'm making it earlier.

8 PM.

If you're moving something back from the observer on the temporal axis you're moving it further away from them aka later in the day.

We tend to judge time in relation to ourselves and the current time, so "back" meaning further away makes more sense, and thus 8 PM.

It's like if you're making plans for a specific day, and somebody says "We could push it back a day," I don't think I've ever heard somebody use that to mean earlier in the week instead of later.

The point of including "still 7" was to try to reinforce that the original start time was 7.

It's simple. Whenever something gets moved "back", just imagine yourself going Back... To The Future. By 1 hour. Into the Future.

But whatever you do, don't think "wait, when Doc told Marty they needed to go 'back', which direction did they travel on the timeline?" You'll only confuse yourself.

But then when we talk daylight savings it's the opposite. Spring Forward means going an hour later and Fall Back an hour earlier.

My vote goes for 8. They clearly mean a delay (starting it an hour early, while grammatically correct, is socially wrong in most cases.)

In fact, I'd say it's more around 8:15. If they weren't ready at time A, they're likely not going to be at time A+60m.

I think the reasoning is that we're the ones doing the springing forward / falling back in that case, while in scenarios like the one this topic was made for, it's the event going forward/back.

This would be my understanding as well. When we are the ones doing the moving, forward/back would be different than that of an event in the future, which takes on a different forward and back in relation to us/current time.

Its like two people walking toward each other. Each persons forward and back are opposite.

Since a time/day/event is always getting closer to us as we move forward in time, we basically perceive it the same way as if it were walking toward us, as opposed to away.

It was originally an hour away from 7 pm, but it was moved to 7 pm. Thus, the answer is 7 pm. The real question is what the original planned time was.
