I think they lost sight of it all and greed took over. Yes, I know its been like this for years now. But right now its next to impossible to get new blood through the door. I can not go up to a friend and be like wanna spend between 750 and a grand to see if you like this game?

I mean the cheapest option is the starter kit thats like 220 I think? and thats two SMALL, SMALL armies that you may not want nor is it remotely enough to get into the game.

I mean other games aren't like this. I mean if I was trying to get you into MTG we could go to a game store and pick up two precon decks for a reasonable price and probably have more fun with those than Meta decks. But the starter kit for Warhammer leaves you wanting more before you even get half way through your first game.

And the prices don't even seem to make sense. I have a perfect grade gundam that cost 200 dollars and has more plastic than any of my Warhammer armies.

It's always been like that for Games Workshop, but they've been really doing extra dumb stuff recently

Which sucks cuz when Horus Heresy was launched it sparked a new golden age for them, and now it's gone

You can get someone started with Warhammer Underworlds (GW's best game currently) for 60 bucks.

Bro, amount of plastic has NOTHING to do with how much you're paying for hobby products.

Yeah I mean The Gundam is better quality plastic, fits better, designed better, and the colors although aren't 100% accurate is a lot better than the Games WorkShop plastic.

I just buy the video games

tbh, I'd probably go that route someday... although likely on a console since some of those games are huge.

I do like the miniatures themselves, though.

I mean... don't the big figures just represent things?

If you really want to play the game that badly can't you just use like a piece of paper with a word of what it is written on it?

Painting and just having cool shit to look at is part of the fun. The only downside to 3D printing your own is you can't play in official GW tournaments and shops, but who gives a fuck.

GW kinda wants to get out of the Tabletop game anyway, so it will soon become a moot (green) point since GT and LVO won't care

I want to give a prompt response so I checked my basic history and I legit couldn't find where I found it... I don't think I was making it up

The only one I was able to find is this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJq6T5wX2ns

But even then, it's speculation and not official. I seem to recall that the sentiment was shared on r/warhammer40k and r/warhammercompetitive as well

GW was always kind of an upper class hobby to me. The friends I had in high school who were into it were the friends that got a new gaming PC every year and who lived in giant houses/mini mansions.

Not surprised it is still that way (or has gotten worse).

Games Workshop has had their most profitable two years like ever, so they are jacking their prices up to the fucking moon.

No other miniatures company has the brand recognition or frankly the model quality and they know it. I don't think it's going to get better.

If your only goal is to play the game sure, but that's kind of missing the point. You'd be better off buying a board game, it would be a million times simpler and likely be a more balanced and faster experience.

I think they mean in terms of competitive gaming, they wanna pull a Nintendo or whatever. In 8th edition they introduced PL (Power Level) as a shorthand for how strong a unit is, which annoyed the competitive side so they had to release points values for everything, too. I think they just want to go with PL and the casual "between friends" games and not the higher end tournament stuff

Considering how quickly they sell out of a product the moment it drops is why they gouge people with their prices. I mean if they're constantly having trouble keeping inventory on the shelf because it keeps getting bought up can you really blame them. Seriously here's a new marine capitan for 35$ it goes on sale at midnight. 12:03 AM comes around and sorry we're sold out of the new capitan. We should have more next month.

too drunk to read 100% rn (i skimmed real hard ok) but did anyone mention the draconian statement they stated with fan stuff now recently

am only into warhammer as far as total war (and vermintide i guess), but people are scared about dmca's for mods of total war warhammer 2 now

i think radious (one of the biggest total war warhammer 2 conversion mods) was contacted by them already. radious is apparently kind of shady regardless tho with their patreon

I mean even years ago this hobby was expensive, Games Workshop always seemed to be the most expensive option for playing these types of games.

Unfortunately any other competitor either targeted different markets, or they never caught on to the level to be a real contender. So Warhammer 40k and to a lesser extent Warhammer still rule the mini's game.

Pretty easy to charge whatever you want when no other competitor is willing to take that precious market share.

Yup.

My friends got me into it in the early 2000's. Prices even back then were like $45 for a 5 pack of Assault Troop Space Marines or a tank or something.
I must have spent over $500, probably more...
I didn't even want to play 40K, or Space Marines... I preferred Warhammer Fantasy, but they were all doing 40K, and had the other armies already, so I ended up getting roped into it. Only benefit was they had a bunch of basic bolt rifle SM's that I got from my friends for cheap. But I guess that's the equivalent of a gateway drug, lol

Still got my collection, I should probably try to sell them...

The thing that annoyed me the most was that in official tournaments, they required any options / bonus weapons to be on the model. Obviously I'm not going to constantly rip off and glue stuff to my models to meet points thresholds, so it was just a blatant ploy to get people to buy more models...

It was discontinued in 2015 for that reason.

Although I guess Age of Sigmar is sort of the continuation, my understanding is they basically just released it to keep selling stuff to the tiny fanbase it still has.

Age of Sigmar basically became more popular within two years than Fantasy ever was. Has better paced releases than 40k now tbh, and a story that's actually going somewhere.

It's difficult to overstate how much of an absolute commercial failure WHF was. For decades. There are a lot of reasons for this, but scrapping it has worked out for them.
