Like for them staring at a wall is more entertaining than watching a movie that's been spoiled for them.

Depends on the film. Some are fine if you spoil them, some kind of are ruined if you know the ending.

For example, if you're watching a mystery and I tell you who the killer is, then yes, I am in fact the asshole.

Anyone who doesn't understand why people hate spoilers has probably never been invested in long running book or comic/manga series before

Pretty much. There's an enjoyment that comes from experiencing it for yourself for the first time (which some people feel more strongly than others), but once it's spoiled, that enjoyment is permanently taken away. That doesn't mean the work can't still be enjoyed, but it does take away that experience.

I can still enjoy things that I have spoiled for me but I'd rather not get spoiled as then my reactions to things would be more fresh and natural. When others tell me spoilers it achieves nothing of value to me as I won't talk to them about it as I've yet to experience it.

I mean watch a film without spoilers and then decide if it was worth watching. You looking up about it will only ruin the experience for you. Nothing wrong with watching a trailer or glancing over reviews that are spoiler free but even then I feel trailers can show too much.

Why not judge yourself?

Ehh, in the modern world where more media is generated on a regular basis than any human being would ever be able to consume even across multiple lifetimes, judging for yourself can be incredibly inefficient. It sucks if you waste 2 hours of your life watching a terrible movie, because you're never getting those 2 hours back and you could have used them to experience something much better. It sucks even worse when you waste 20-40+ hours of your life on a terrible video game.

The trick is, even if you don't trust other people's reviews (and you shouldn't, most people have terrible taste), it's fairly easy to find plot summaries that aren't necessarily spoiler-ish, so you can kind of get a feel for what the story is like while still experiencing any surprises or twists relatively fresh. So the best solution is rarely skip to the end and see how the story concludes. Especially since reading a bland summary of the ending without any of the context that led up to it is almost always going to leave you cold and uninterested.

Why would you even ask that? Do I need to reword it? I look up the endings to movies I'm not sure about to see if it's interesting to watch. I don't understand the concept of "being spoiled" my mind doesn't function that way, I get no more or less enjoyment from a movie regardless of what I know going into it.

I feel like the hatred of people who dislike spoilers comes from said people either using it to shut down all conversation on a subject or inserting themselves into a conversation that they're not a part of just to shut it down. Cause, like, a lot of people who are against spoilers tend to do stuff like make it so you can't talk about basically anything regarding a subject because it all might be spoilers. Or, conversely, you could be talking with another person about something and they'll overhear it and come over just to demand you shut up so you don't spoil it for them. It makes discussion of a topic extremely difficult. I remember once chatting with some people online about FFXIV's recent story patch and the mod told us to take it to a different channel since we were discussing story things and that really did not make me think better of the people who didn't want it to be 'spoiled'.

I personally subscribe to the belief that any good story is worth hearing twice and that the story is best when you can pick up on all the little twists and nuances. As such I'm 'spoiler immune'. Spoil something for me and it doesn't matter and may even enhance my enjoyment. But I know I'm not the majority either.

Pretty much all that needs to be said.

Spoil the ending to Rambo: Oh, so he kills a bunch of guys? Cool.

Spoil the ending to Vanilla Sky (just the first one that popped into my head): Ruins the whole movie.

It makes me watch a movie differently. If I'm watching a thriller and the killer is spoiled, then I'm gonna hyperfocus on that specific character and pick up on hints that I might have missed on an unspoiled first watch. It takes me out of the movie a bit. But I can still enjoy a story even if it's spoiled for me

I also gotta wonder how these spoiler whiners deal with tropes/cliche's. I mean, if there's a black character who is the best friend of the white MC who just so happens to be 2 days away from retirement and they're fighting an alien force that they have no clue how strong they are... is it REALLY spoilers to point out that he dies? Or the teen couple that ignores the stories of the killer so they can separate from the group and engage in sexy times because they totally don't believe the killer is real and care more about banging. I'm sure you've thought of multiple by this point where the outcome is clear just because you're familiar with the tropes/cliches.

It still is, because you might be reading/watching one of the MANY stories that deliberately subverts the trope and does the exact opposite.

You may suspect what's going to happen, but you don't know, and subversion of expectations is still possible. But it's different if I flat out tell you who lives, who dies, how they beat the aliens, and which character was secretly a leprechaun the entire time.

Yea, but at the same time if I'm watching a popular action movie about time traveling killer robots or something not know to be heavy on the subversions, is it really a spoiler? Where does the line exist between 'reasonable assumption' and 'spoiler'?

Possibly. Though, I dont think Ive ever felt that The problem is the journey almost doesnt matter in many cases because you already know the key things that happen on the journey. I hate surprises and go for spoilers. If there is something bad happening, I need to know in advance to avoid the major shock and disappointment that will make me physically ill. Now, I at least need to know if I book or movie has a happy ending, because if it doesn't I won't read or watch it. I don't get along with tragedies.

Spoilers don't spoil the story for me because I can usually enjoy the story for what it is. There are even books and movies I've read or watched multiple times. For people who don't like spoilers, do they just read a book or watch a movie only once? From the 2nd viewing and on, we already know what happens.
